N2 plus fan not spinning

Post by Ampere »

Just got the fan for the n2plus.
Connected it to the board and booted CoreELEC nightly 20200731, but the fan is not spinning.
Yes i checked the polarity.
Is there a temperature threshold ?

Thanks

yes the fan doesn't turn on until the temperature reaches 65c.

If you want to verify that the fan works it is possible to lower the trigger temperature temporarily to verify the function of the fan.

SSHing into the device and entering the following command will lower the trigger temperature to 20c which should be low enough for most people for the fan to activate.
echo 20000 > /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_4_temp
and the following will restore it to it's default.
echo 65000 > /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_4_temp

I use Ubuntu 21.10 and the fan is absolutely not responding.
At least I can tell that it is spinning like crazy if I connect its wires directly to a 5v power source.
Could this be a Kernel bug?

By default, the fan will start to spin when CPU temp reaches 65C. You can test this command if the fan runs.

Code: Select all

echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon2/pwm1_enable
BTW, what's the output of uname -a?

Uname -a shows "Linux odroid-n2plus 5.14.0-odroid-arm64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Ubuntu 5.14.10-202110132311~impish (2021-10-13) aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux"

At 17:00 german time I have to analyze why my motorcycle doesn't fire anything.
I can test the Odroid at 19:00 german time.

How does one disable automatic control so one can set the PWM speed and turn the fan on/off manually?

I got the fan finally spinning. There was a update for the kernel, too.

fanspped-full.dtbo does not work anymore. If I use it in config.ini it prevents the fan from spinning.

Thank you.

Code: Select all

odroid@odroid-n2plus:~$ uname -a
Linux odroid-n2plus 5.14.0-odroid-arm64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Ubuntu 5.14.13-202110221853~impish (2021-10-22) aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux
And if I want to use the command

Code: Select all

echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/class/hwmon/hwmon2/pwm1_enable
on startup, what do I need to do?

What do you have in your "config.ini"? Please share the file.

Code: Select all

[generic]
overlay_resize=16384
overlay_profile=""
overlays="spi0 i2c0 i2c1 fanspeed-full"

[overlay_custom]
overlays="i2c0 i2c1"

[overlay_hktft32]
overlays="hktft32"

[overlay_hktft35]
overlays="hktft35 sx865x-i2c1"
If I delete fanspeed-full, your command for testing works. But if I have it written in the config.ini it is unable to work und nothing spins.

I found an issue with fanspeed-full and it's uploaded with new kernel package, so please do update with new kernel and check if the fan runs after rebooting.

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt upgrade
$ sudo reboot
$ uname -a
Linux ODROID-N2Plus 5.14.0-odroid-arm64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Ubuntu 5.14.15-202110310008~impish (2021-10-30) aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux

Well, I am stumped as to why I do not have permission...
What am I doing wrong?

Code: Select all

It may be that the kernel was compiled with read-only trip points that can't be changed...

Well I think this is the case.
But we have the possibility to emulate the temperatures through the virtual termal_zone0.
Just overwrite /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp with 71000 <= 94000.
This should trigger the fan.

Hi All,

I am facing the same problem. The fan is not spinning, and I am not able to push the CPU temperature above 60 deg.

Also, I cannot write to this file

Code: Select all

echo 20000 > /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_4_temp
-bash: /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_4_temp: Permission denied
I changed the permission to:

Code: Select all

-rw-r--rw- 1 root root 4096 Jan 26 12:01 /sys/devices/virtual/thermal/thermal_zone0/trip_point_4_temp
but still it returned the same error.
here is what uname -a returns:

Code: Select all

Linux odroidn2p 6.1.0-odroid-arm64 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue, 23 Jan 2024 11:03:15 +0000 aarch64 GNU/Linux
Any way to try out that the fan is working?

Thanks
