Which Odroid Device

Post by rockla »

My use case :-
  • 24x7 Torrent Downloader.
  • Jackett , Sonarr & Radarr.
  • Use is as headless server.
  • Plex - Stream on Fire 4K.
  • Must provide max Samba speed with windows around 90 Mb transfer rate.
  • Must Support Direct Play 4K HDR , I'm not too fussy about audio and can switch to AAC if there is any transcoding. But would like to know whether it can play TrueHD.
I already have C2 which i use for same purpose but it clearly goes into transcoding whenever i play any 4K HDR movie which is more than 25 Mb Bit rate.

The options I could think :
  • Odroid C4
  • Odroid HC2
  • Odroid N2+
I was really thinking about N2+ but there were some USB issues are those being resolved ?

I think N2+, as it is definitely the most powerful of the three.

I can't tell if new batch of N2+ has USB issues resolved, but I remember seeing somewhere the failure rate is in the order of 0,1% so I wouldn't worry about that.

HC4 has the advantage of built-in sata and should work (except for realtime transcoding).

Thanks for the replies but my requirement is download box + Plex and i believe HC4 doesnt have much power compared to C2.

How much better is HC4 vs C2

Odroid C4 has the same SoC as HC4.
Here you can take a look at some benchmarks if this is what you mean.

I researched else where and there seems to be problem with N2/N2+ with usb and that's how i plan to use so no go for now.

I even searched for HC4 but that case is fragile the HDD keeps moving , hoping hardkernel releases a better board in future

You did find 0,1% of users reporting USB problems, but apparently not 99,9% that have no such problems. Yes, everyone that I know, myself included, don't go online randomly reporting my stuff works as expected.

I have N2+ and USB ports work OK for last year. I can sell it to you for $100, fully tested unit with no warranty

OK, I don't know where you live, might be tough in some regions.

I don't use SMB, I don't transfer huge files.
I mean, If I transfer a huge file I don't care if it takes 10s or 20s. But that's just me!

See the benchmark on the product page. I can do 90+ MB/s on my N1, which is lower spec.

Yes, I'm using the SATA ports (over PCIE) on my N1.
I haven't tested the N2 as a Samba server.

Going to place order now , finally question the offical charger is 12V 2A but i see people running with 15V 4A.

Is it recommended to use 15V 4A , i only plan to attach a external drive of 5 TB via USB

Should i get this -

12V/2A 24Watt PSU should be enough since external 2.5" HDD peak power should be less than 10Watt (5V/2A) normally.
Is your 5TB USB HDD 2.5inch disk? or 3.5inch?

If it's USB, it should not exceed 500mA I think.

It seems to 800mA at very busy access according to @rockia's link.
I bet it can be slightly over 1000mA in the initial spinning up disks.

Anyway, 12V/2A PSU must be fine if you connect only one 2.5" USB HDD to the N2+.
