Weird sound during H3+ work

Post by fenio »

Hey,

I recently bought H3+ and I'm happy with how it works. Was able to add extender to have now 8 SATA ports in sum and I'm planning to build NAS solution on it.
However when I keep it running on my desk without case it makes some pretty awkward noise.

This is a video showing it https://youtu.be/nmqig3Sur9s

Is this something normal and can I simply ignore it?
I'm pretty sure that once I close it in case I won't probably notice it but I'm just worried that it's some symptom of malfunction and I shouldn't ignore it.

Any comments appreciated.

Well I tried to run some stress tests based on comments in that thread.

stress -c 4 => runs silent
stress -m 4 => runs silent
stress -i 4 => runs silent
stress -d 4 => makes different kind of noise but still more quiet than when idling

So I should just live with that and make sure my system is actually doing something? :)

Cześć,

I played your video several times but can't hear anything. I must be old.
In your case the frequency is borderline audible. The spectral analysis of your youtube sample below.

I guess no solution has been identified so far, but I think your findings helped narrow down possible causes.
If the noise is the most noticeable with low power consumption, that could mean the Buck converter skips beats due to low demand.

If this is acceptable to you, you actually could run nice -n15 stress -c 1 in the background to load one CPU core with low priority. This should not affect the system performance at all, except the higher power consumption.

Thanks for your analysis but as I already mentioned all I care is just the matter whether this is symptom of some malfunction or not. If this is normal then I can live with it.
My device is mostly idling now but at some point it will start doing actual job so I won't hear that noise ;)
