H2+ does not start any more

Post by claudio »

I have an H2+ that has been working perfectly for few months.
The other day I added a second hard drive, and now I cannot seem to make it boot any more.

When I plug the power, it turns on the fan and it lights up the red power LED and the blue active LED (the one between the red one and the amber one).
If a NVMe drive is inserted the green LED also blinks once, but then it stays dark, while the amber LED just stays dark regardless of what is attached.
There is no video output, and the USB devices I plugged in do not seem to receive any power either.

Reset button does not seem to do anything.
Holding the power button down for 5 seconds turns the H2+ off, and it stays off as long as I keep the button pressed.
As soon as I release the button it turns itself on again.

I tried removing the hard drives and the NVMe drive, and also the memory banks.
I tried booting with every components combination: 1 memory bank and NVMe, 1 memory bank and 1 SSD, 2 memory banks and nothing else...
I also tried to remove the BIOS battery and wait for few hours.
I always get the same behaviour.

I tried to attach a 3.3V serial monitor to the GPIO header, but I could not get anything out of it (though I could be connecting to wrong PINs or making any other mistake, I have not used the H2+ serial ports before).

Memory are two 8 GiB banks HX424S14IBK2.
They have been working fine for the past few months, so I doubt it is a compatibility issue.

The latest BIOS update (1.23) is installed.

I am not entirely sure what the LED are supposed to show.
According to this link [2] the red LED and the active blue LED should be always on, and nothing on screen seems to indicate no RAM detected.
The other blue LED should only be turned on when the reset button is pressed [1], but I am quite sure it used to be permanently on during the previous months.
Now it stays off.

Does anyone has any idea what could be the cause, and what can I do about it?

I have found this thread [3] which describes a failed BIOS update, and the symptoms are the same as mine.
Should I try to manually flash the BIOS with a programmer?

Do you have a DMM to measure the backup batter voltage?
If yes, check if it is higher than 2.2 volt or not.

BTW, when/where did you purchase your H2+?
As far as I remember, we had no stock from February.
Did you also use our official 15V/4A PSU?

The RTC battery measures about 3.1 V with a multimeter.
I also tried to start it without it, but with no luck.

Yes, it was quite a struggle to find someone who had it in stock.
I got it in April from an American distributor who only had two left, together with the official PSU (which I just measured, 15V / 4A).
I got some other components (SATA cables, case, LED power button) from a German distributor.
Everything is official HardKernel hardware.

All the peripherals look fine.

Since it is very hard to find what's wrong remotely, can you please ship the board to us(Korea) to repair it?

It was indeed the BIOS.

Before considering shipping, I tried to manually re-flash the BIOS as explained in the previous links, and now it works again.
It took me a couple attempts: the first time I remove RAM, let flashrom choose the chip type and use BIOS 1.23, but it did not work and the LEDs started blinking more randomly at boot.
The second time I left RAM installed, explicitly specified the chip type W25Q64.W and flashed 1.22, and it worked.

Perhaps RAM, chip type and BIOS version didn't matter, and I just held the clip in the wrong way the first time, but now it works and it's all that counts :D
