G.Skill F4-2400C16D-16GRS 8Gx2 no longer supported

Post by thetechnick »

Hi Hardkernel team!
First: Very cool board you have build! Looking forward building cool stuff on top :)

Short update: I just received my Odroid H2+ installed the Network Card and 2x 8G F4-2400C16D-16GRS modules from G.Skill.
On first boot they where recognized and everything worked fine BIOS showed 16 G Memory (BIOS v1.12 - although I am not 100% sure about the exact version anymore).
After upgrading BIOS to v1.22-ESF for the network card, I had to remove the bottom module or the board would no longer boot.

If it's safe to downgrade the BIOS, I could double check to reproduce the issue and confirm which BIOS version works.
Maybe that could help in finding a regression.

Otherwise it would be nice to remove that module from the supported list, unless someone else could confirm it's still working on the latest BIOS version.

Btw. I have cross checked, both modules work as long as none is in the bottom slot.

Best,
Nico

You can downgrade the BIOS to v1.12. But the old BIOS doesn't support the H2 Net Card.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-h2/hardw ... os_release

Please try v1.12 and let me know if the bottom DRAM slot works or not.

Wow, that was a quick response :)

Downgraded to GLK-SF 1.12 x64 and now both modules are recognized again and BIOS shows 16384 MB of Memory.
Upgrading to 1.22 (for the Network Card) and the board does not show the BIOS screen, until I remove the 2nd Memory module.

Please advice, if I can be of more assistance to test behavior :)

Thank you for the quick test and feedback.
I think some portion of the DRAM driver code in the new BIOS could be a problem.

We need to buy the exactly same DRAM module to investigate root causes.
Can you give me a link of the DRAM seller?

Sure thing, I had no idea Memory compatibility is such a big hassle...

I got my modules from mindfactory in germany:
https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info ... 33470.html

Here is also a picture of the module, if you want to double check serial numbers:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1k68nMT ... sp=sharing

Thanks again for taking care :)

Edit: Do you have a recommendation for Modules that are tested with this Firmware version?
Wiki has a few modules without comment, are those modules tested by Hardkernel? (e.g. Samsung M471A5244CB0-CRC)

Thank you for the links. We need to find a way to buy it from Korea.

We've tested several different Samsung Modules. All of them worked fine on the latest BIOS.
Samsung's three different 2400, 2666, 2933 DRAMs worked fine at 2400 rate too.

@thetechnick,
We will try building another BIOS file to fix the issue. It may take several days.
Can you please keep the G.SKILL Ripjaws memory modules by middle of the next week for the test?

Wow, just awesome support!
I will stick to these memory modules, looking forward to the BIOS :)

PS: Showed a coworker this thread and he had to order an Odroid H2+ as well. Keep up the good work!

Please try this trial BIOS SF Ver 1.23. It locks the minimum CAS-Latency value at 17.
If it works fine, we will build another ESF BIOS to support the H2 Net Card in the next week.

@odroid, I have tested the new BIOS, but it behaves the same way as before.

Project Version: GLK-SF 1.23 x64

When both memory modules are installed the board is not booting anymore.
Is there any kind of log I could provide you to give you more information?

Sorry for double post, but something I found strange:
When flashing the BIOS back to 1.22 for the Network Card, the board would not boot until I briefly remove the single memory module and put it back in.

Almost panicked out of fear I have bricked the board :D
I had the same issue when upgrading from 1.22 (non network card) to the Network Card BIOS, but blamed the memory issue at the time.

After the board booted once, I can also swap both of my modules into the top slot and the board boots up no problem.

I think we need your memory sticks for debugging.
We will send you two Samsung 8GB modules tomorrow via UPS or DHL.
Can you send us your memory modules once you receive our modules?
We will pay the shipping cost.
If this suggestion is acceptable, send me a PM with shipping information.

Hi,

i can confirm the very same thing. was on BIOS 1.12 with 2x4 GB GSKILL Ripjaws . updated to 1.22 -> no bios screen. Removed the bottom module and the battery and could start again after a night without battery backup .

everything was working and then bios 1.22 doesnt work with the RAM anymore

regards,
Simon

According to the tracking information, the GSKILL Ripjaws memory sample is still on the way. It seems to need one more week even after 6 weeks travel. :o
Once we receive it, we will try to find a root cause.
