H2 Reb B / H2 Reb b+ Memory Issues

Post by rvalle »

Hi!

I want to share my experience with regards to memory and H2s.

As I build my H2 Blade Center I now have 4xH2s

3xH2 and 1xH2+

I have used 2 memory types:

HyperX Impact 32GB (2x16GB) / SO-DIMM DDR4 / 2400MHz / CL14 (HX424S14IBK2/32)
Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2x16GB) / 2400Mhz / DDR4 (CMSX32GX4M2A2400C16)

I have 32GB on all the H2 boards and they are rock solid. I have been running them as cloudstack nodes for months without an issue. With both memory types.

If I mount the same configuration on the H2+ it does not work. In fact It looks like the upper bank (back0) is broken, non of the modules has worked on that bank 0, but all Hyperx modules work on bank 1. Corsair modules do not work on the H2+ despite been rock solid on the H2.

Also, I purchase 2xnew corsair and could not allocate them neither to one the H2 running Hyperx or to the H2+. But note that I have another H2 that has been running this memory for months. I have not looked if all my H2s have the same Firmware version.

If I had to guess I would say that all this modules are compatible but there is some kind of initalization bug in the firmware and regression is taking place between firmware releases, because as you see what works on one H2 does not work in another, what works on one bank does not work on the other.

I hope this helps in debugging firmware issues. perhaps a cluster for regression testing should be setup to get this right once and for all.

Otherwise my cluster rocks!

IT WORKS!

I read someone that mentioned that the H2 may take a long time to boot up first time.

So, I have installed the 32GB HyperX on the H2 RebB+ and waited, and after about 5 times longer than it takes to boot with 1 SODIMM module, things started to happen.

For some reason, the first boot with both modules takes a long time. no clue why. but munch much longer than just with 1 modue.

Glad to hear that.
Right. Some memory modules with dual bank configuration took up to a couple of minutes for the first booting.
It seems to be caused by uncertain garbage data in the BIOS backup SRAM.

I've added your Corsair memory in the Whitelist. Thanks.
