SSD M.2 Samsung gets hot and doesn't work

Unread postby alex_dom » Mon Dec 03, 2018 3:26 pm

I purchased my H2 mainly for web server purposes, so needed to replace my big brother server, that is power hungry to work with the solar batteries.

When turns on the H2 with initially installed hardware including SSD M.2 Samsung 970 PRO 512GB - NVMe, the SSD starts heating up. Having reached the t=80C, I turn the H2 off to avoid the damage. I take the SSD of the slot, and start it again. Then all goes fine with eMMC only. Tried to tweak the BIOS, but nothing helps. I use dedicated enterprise grade PSU, MeanWell DR-15-100 (100W) with preset voltage of 15.20V.

We've tested several different NVMe SSD cards. But we had no chance to try the 970 PRO.

Was 80°C measured from the SSD S.M.A..R.T. info? or CPU temperature?

That was the temperature on the controller of the stick. The CPU, RAM and the H2 overall stay cold. As the system won't boot up.
If I were to remove one memory module, it works, but still gets pretty hot. I described an issue with the RAM here.

Tomorrow I will get the WD 1TB M.2 3-rd revision. Will check it on and post the results.

I hope you run a recent Linux install so smartmontools package version is recent enough for proper NVMe support. If you have the package installed output from smartctl -x -q noserial /dev/sda for both SSDs would be interesting to get an idea about temperatures and respective power states.

Does this mean without NVMe SSD attached your board boots with two DIMM modules inserted?

Out of curiosity: does increasing input voltage to 18V change anything?

No, the voltage remains the same, how would it change? The PSU is ok.
The amparage goes up but that is how it should be.
Also it gets hot, and the system won’t start. The temp gradually rizes up. So the SMART not accesable.
Yes, it works fine with one memory module. And the NVMe module is not installed.

All the Meanwell PSU we use have adjustable output voltage which is often a problem if you don't have a multimeter ready to check the provided voltage (especially with 5V PSUs when they're adjusted to provide less than 5V by accident). The 15V MW PSU I have here allows to adjust voltage between 13.5V and 18V so I thought it would be an idea to adjust it to the maximum (just in case).

Wrt the storage problems I now totally lost track (or don't understand why the problems aren't addressed 'bottom to top' -- first eliminate generic booting issues related to DRAM then start to look into SSD heat/consumption issues).

All I could say is that providing smartctl -x output for NVMe SSDs can be enlightening since reporting 'Supported Power States' and with some SSD also a temperature history

The voltage on adjustable PSU can’t be changed for whatever reason. The resistor value is adjustable by hands and the screwdriver, can’t be changed by the output. The output DC is not changed. And yes, I checked it with the multimiter.
What you got lost in? I answered your questions, what happens if one memory module is removed. Let’s not mix. Those are not proved unrelated conditions. Memory issue is the separate one.
And I repeat, the system wont boot with the NVMe module installed, so how do I now what would SMART tell you?

What is this it that 'works' and what gets hot then?

I have a Samsung 970 EVO running here without issues. Temperature is at 49C with an incoming gigabit network stream. I also have a meanwell dr-100-15 that is not yet connected. Will test that soon. So far, no issues with h2, very nice.

If your WD Black also has the same issue, something could be wrong in your H2.
Please let me know the result once you test the WD black.

Ok. Tested the WD Black 1TB 3rd gen today. It gets hot too. What is good, the system can start and I was able to install the 18.04 on it. But I am aftaid that NVMe drive will fail eventually. I measured the temperature on the controller. 78 C. After that I turned the system off.
Tried to contact Odroid, they proposed me to send it back to Korea. Shoot, that costs. And then I needed the replacment for my solar power project now.
I’d probabely wait till they fix all issues on it or go back to my hungry core i5 server.

Really sorry about that.
Once we receive your board, we will carefully investigate what causes the serious heat to the NVMe storage.

Ok, could you send me a replacement then? And is it possible to send this one somewhere in the US? Cause it is too costy. Unless you pay for it. It wasn’t free shipping initially by the way.

There is no place to accept the RMA in the US if you purchased your items from our web-store directly.
Please see our RMA policy.
https://www.hardkernel.com/faq/

As per other customers' mentions, the USPS shipping cost should not be very expensive.

I understand your policy guys, but look at me. Spent two weeks waiting. Spent one week frustrated. Have to deal with all these testing equipment that costs way more than H2. Now have to wait for replacement, and pay a backshipping to help you to eliminate the problems in H2. Awesome!
No guys, I will try to sell it here in the US. Funny thing, there was the same situation with XU4 in the past. You tested it on people. But now you make money out of it. And what you gave back? More money for you. You guys use your comunity not the way, that Raspberry pi team does. It is for you, not for us.

I don't think all H2 have the issue you are experiencing so it is not true that they are using you to better their hardware.

Their RMA policy isn't new. While I think with faulty hardware the return shipping should be covered under certain circumstances you must not understand how often hardware is returned with no faults.

You did provide a lot of helpful information and they are trying to fix the issue.

And for the Pi Foundation, they don't sell hardware directly so I don't get the comparison.

There is no comparisson between two indeed. Other than it is all ready to go vs all ready to sell. I buy things to employ them. You wouldn’t keep your protectionism if you were like me.

Let me know when Eben Upton personally assists you, because the CEO of Hardkernel did. I don't think you have had much experience dealing with the Pi community.

I am not protecting Hardkernel, they make the best hardware for my needs. I support them because they support me.

I wish you the best of luck Alex.
