H2+ with ESXi (NIC RTL8125B)

Post by renarena »

Good Morning,

I tried to install various versions of ESXi but the NICs drivers are not present. In the last days I read a lot of articles and found solutions for the previous versions (H2). This solutions doesn't work with the new special Realtek NIC 8125B. Have anyone a solution of this?

Many thanks for practicable answers.

Bernd

You must wait because it is pretty new NIC and VMWare have still no drivers provided. You can try Proxmox in that time. In proxmox debian dkms driver will work.

Thank you for your reply ... VMware don't support this kind of NICs since a longer time. You can read this in the official compatibility-list. I know this.In the past there are some articles from other peoples. They built a special iso including the Realtek drivers. For the H2 it's working, only for the brand-new RTL8125B it seams it's impossible at this time. Now I'll try it by using proxmox. Yesterday before I installed Ubuntu 20.x but there was not a network present  too
Let me try the proxmox

You have to install the RTL8125B driver yourself, it is not currently included in the Linux kernel.

Follow the instructions there: https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-h2/appli ... _on_h2plus

Thank you, I'll do it. Is it possible to use a USB-tethering by mobile phone for an internet connection?

MANY THANKS to kopfik :)

No warranty - use on your own risk.

Going to try it myself now with cusomized 6.7u3 iso.

nice dude!' i'd need somebody like you IRL... :D i have the driver for some time already i also wanted to make a how to, but mine would certainly not have pictures like yours :)
but anyway, if somebody is interested in manual driver compilation from a source:

https://koolshare.cn/thread-185370-1-1.html

did you manage to passthrough the GPU? i gave it just 10 minutes to try, i read some articles that it should maybe work...

@getFLASHed,

Great! I've added the Hynix 16GB RAM module in the compatibility list.

Hi getFLASHed,

Could you please share your custom iso with the realtek drivers? or the compiled vib zip at least? It would be greatly appreciated!

Hi
I have Odroid H2+ with ESXi 6.7U3 with R8125 and NVMe patches applied.
It has an issue with VLAN tagging. When VMs are in PortGroups without tag, it works well.
But if PortGroups has a VLAN tag it does not work.
Frame arrives to switch with VLAN tag (this is OK) but when frame goes from switch to ESXi with the tag, it is never passed to the VM.
Did somebody the same issue? How to solve it?

Thanks

Hi
I've tried to upgrade to net-r8125-9.004.01-2.vib but it is the same.
Newer version probably doesn't exist. :(

Anyone have updates on this? With the additional NIC card released, the H2+ becomes an awesome mini ESX host if it could handle VLANs.

ESXi 7+ wont likley have support for 8125b (or many non USB based nics from Reltek) for a while since they deprecated and removed the VMKLinux from ESXi which allowed people to easily port over drivers from linux.
They have since moved to Native Drivers, however the SDK to make drivers is behind their IOV program which is many MANY $$$/£££
There are currently no native drivers publicly available on 7.0 yet and seeing how VMWare always seem to (weirdly) take a wide berth from Realtek we might not get driver support in 7.0 unless they change something or open up the Driver Development Kit.
At present it feels VMWare went half-arsed into this by deprecating something a large amount of their home-labers and VMUG members use, and locked the "build your own solution" behind a very pricey paywall.

However
6.7 with the patch, 250GB nvme, and 2x 2TB drives works really well for vsan. Will get a list of hardware i used so it can be added to the compatibility list.

For 6.7 here is a link i found (sorry forgot the source) with the ISO and VIB to have working 2.5gb links (tested and can confirm it works with 9k mtu and vsan seems happy with it)

@Rhodederz

THANK YOU very much for the link to the ISO image. Been suffering for the last weeks trying to inject 8125b drivers on a 6.7 image.

My setup is:
Ryzen 7 5800
Asus TUF Gaming B550m (RTL8125b)

Kudos to you, I appreciate your help.

Any udeas what would help with that?
