Activation of connection failed - Realtek r8125 Module installed

Post by iiydro »

Hi,

I'm struggling to get either ethernet port to connect properly. I've tried re-installing ubuntu 21.04 twice, installing the r8125 kernel module directly from the realtek website. I've also tried the r8168 module to avail.

The network-manager can see the two ethernet adapters but is unfortunately unable to get them to connect.

I have tried reinstalling network-manager to no avail also.

Please let me know what details could be helpful to narrow this down - I'm lost as to where to look and whats causing this.

Hi @tobetter,

I had tried that yes but to no avail. It seems unrelated because nothing had changed in the router settings between when the ethernet could connect to then when it couldn't, but it seems to have been resolved by a hard reset on the router.

Unsure why ubuntu didn't give me any indication that was the cause. It wasn't affecting any other wired devices either unfortunately, so there wasn't a smoking gun as such.

Thanks

Ok so unfortunately after a few days the issue has returned. Once again, no router settings were changed after the hard reset mentioned above.

I have just checked once again that everything is in order according to: https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-h2/appli ... 8125#linux

Can you share ethtool command outputs?
What is the LED status on the RJ45 jack?
LED indicators (Green: Link, Amber: Traffic)

I've purchased a USB ethernet adapter (Anker) - The same situation has occurred on that too. So I'm now more confident that the issue is on Linux.

The lights are green and amber flashing. However when I look on the GUI, the network manager shows 'USB Ethernet' as Connected. When I check route - nothing. IP appeared as 169....
I've added 1.1.1.1 to /etc/resolv.conf and also added a route 192.168.1.1. According to: https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... 845#448845
IPv4 and IPv6 are set to DHCP, so I'm unsure why it lost its route after previously having it.

After attempting to disconnect / reconnect the connection - 'Activation of network connection failed' shows again.
Once I get any connection again I'll fetch the ethtool output.

After freshly installing Ubuntu 21.04, two Ethernet ports on the H2+ board worked out of the box with the stock r8168 driver even it was slower than Realtek's r8125 driver.
I think there could be an issue with your router/hub settings which is not compatible probably.
