VNC fixes for Ubuntu 18.04.2 with H2

Unread post by puremind » Sun Jul 07, 2019 7:55 pm

All,

In case this helps... I had two major issues with VNC under Ubuntu 18.04.2 with H2

Sharing here if anybody finds it useful:

1. The forced encryption with the Ubuntu VNC server doesn't let you log in.

To fix this, simply disable the encryption, but there's no easy way to do this with the installed GUI options.

This fix is sourced from https://www.hagensieker.com/wordpress/2 ... ntu-18-04/

Open Ubuntu Software and install:

dconf-editor

Open the app,

Now navigate to:

ORG > GNOME > DESKTOP > REMOTE ACCESS

Then find the “Require Encryption” setting and toggle it off:

VNC require encryption

Fastest terminal fix:

Code: Select all

dconf write /org/gnome/desktop/remote-access/require-encryption false
Thanks to crashoverride

2. If no HDMI device attached, after restarts the VNC client connects to a blank screen

sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-dummy xorg-video-abi-23 xserver-xorg-core
sudo wget -P /etc/X11 https://gist.githubusercontent.com/mang ... /xorg.conf

Then reboot

You will be then able to connect to the VNC server without a display attached.

Regards the no display with VNC on Ubuntu 18.04.3 I've found a better solution that effectively works when there is no display connected based on https://creechy.wordpress.com/2018/06/1 ... nc-access/

sudo apt install xserver-xorg-video-dummy xorg-video-abi-23 xserver-xorg-core
sudo wget -P /etc/X11 https://gist.githubusercontent.com/mang ... /xorg.conf

Then reboot...
You can connect then to VNC

for some reason after you disconnect then the display is gone and you'd need to reboot. Let's see if there is another more permanent solution :(
