H2 overheat - is it dead?

Post by sonicbuddha »

I pulled an older H2 off the shelf with the thought to rebuild an arcade cabinet, installed Windows, and in a few minutes of copying files which drove the CPU to 100% it died, no power, no lights. Is it dead? Or did it trip a thermal sensor that can be reset?

Which power supply have you used?
Is the DC output still working?
If you have a DMM, measure the DC plug voltage first.

Any LED lights on the board?

Code: Select all

- Red (PWR) - Solid light when DC power is supplied
- Blue (left, ALIVE) - System is running
- Blue (right, RESET) - When the RESET button is pressed, it turns off shortly
- Amber (SATA) - Flashes when there is data transfer
- Green (NVMe) - Flashes when there is data transfer

Stock cullpower power supply. When plugged in it has a small green led. The board, however, lights no leds what so ever.

Can you try measuring the output voltage of the power supply?

Access to a mutlimeter is unlikely, knowing how to utilize it properly in this situation even moreso. I can say I have (had?) multiple H2s, none of their power supplies work for this sorry little board.

In that case, the power supply is not a root cause.

Measure voltage across the PD1 nearby the DC jack to check if the fuse was dead or not.

I'm open to giving this a try but, before I start up that learning curve, if it is the fuse is it replaceable?

You need to desolder the SMD type fuse and solder a new one.
If you don't have any experience of soldering SMD type components, you might need to ask it other people or something like a smartphone repair shop.

Before going to next step, it must be worth to check the fuse status.

Random follow up, anywhere in the states still selling the H2 CPU fan with 1.25mm 4-pin wafer male connector? A lot of places consider the H2 old news and I worry about my lone remaining H2. When I used it as a play server it was fine but putting it to use where it might be under sustained load now seems problematic without a fan.

Email Bo @ Ameridroid, they end up with used items somehow so he may pull a hail Mary for you.

Sadly, I've already been to Ameridroid, discussed with them, they are out of the H2 fans

You can make an adapter cable. Get a pigtail with the 1.25mm JST connector on one end, and use this for the other end https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HYTGH7D/
Then you can connect a Noctua fan :)
