Kali Linux 3.8.13.11 Fortress for ODROID-X2 (20140101)

Unread post by robroy » Sat Jul 06, 2013 2:29 pm

I created a Kali Linux image with Kernel 3.8.13.11, forked from the official Kali release, with a suite of applications for security penetration testing.

Download the image here:
http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/ ... 101.img.xz

European mirror by @traxo:
http://odroid.txmonitor.de/

Want to upgrade your existing Kali image?
Kernel updates: http://builder.mdrjr.net/tools/kernel-update.sh

Username: root
Password: toor

Applications: Kali Penetration Testing Suite, Iceweasel, Xine and Oracle JDK 8.

Customizations left for you upon burning the image to your card:
  • 1. Resize the "rootfs" partition to fit your SD card. This is best done on another Linux system using the GParted utility.
    2. Set your time zone using System Settings -> Time & Date.
    3. Set your language using System Settings -> Language Settings.
    4. Set your username and password using System Settings -> User Accounts.
Improvements and upgrades:
  • 1. To overclock to 1.92GHz, type "sudo gedit /etc/rc.local" in Terminal and remove the "#" from the beginning of the line that starts with "echo 1920000".
    2. Iceweasel has the IcedTea7 plugin installed for Java browser applets.
    3. All upgrades and updates have been run using aptitude, apt-get and synaptic.
    4. All orphaned and obsolete packages have been purged, including the original kernel.
Features in this release:
  • Official HK kernel 3.8.13.11 (commit 4d40140b44917be7fa344cc8242b8ed0f3e89e97)
    Oracle JDK8 September 2013
Notes:
  • Due to lack of official support for binwalk on the ARM platform, the "kali-linux-full" and "kali-linux" metapackages are not marked as installed. However, all of the Kali software that comprises the meta-packages, including binwalk, are present as stand-alone applications instead.

When the image is booted without the wired LAN plugged in, the clock time may become out-of-sync, unless you are using a clock battery. In Kali, this time difference causes the root file system to be mounted as read-only. If this happens, type "fsck /" when logged in as root, then reboot with the LAN properly attached. This will unlock the file system and re-synchronize the clock with Internet time via NTP.

Wow!

Does this work with most of the functionality of Kali for the X2?

Eager to try it out. THANK YOU!

Kali Fortress is the authentic full version from Offensive Security, originally released only for the U2. I dropped in an updated X2 kernel, replaced a few missing packages such as binwalk, and added HTML5 video player support.
Eager to try it out. THANK YOU!

Hello, is it possible to change the kernel of an iso/image file?

I would like to create a actual 1.0.4 Image file for the X2 and it seems that the image which can be found on the Kali website is for the U2?

Thank you

Sorry, I cannot find something about replacing a kernel in an image file.

Just for understanding: Is it possible to download a image file for U2 (for example from kali.org) and replace the kernel only or is it required to build a completely new image?

Please post a link if there is anything to find in this Forum.
(I want to do it myself to understand how it works and learning to work with Linux.)

Thank you.

Chris, please read the preceding posts, you are asking a very redundant question: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f ... 668#p15361
Please post a link if there is anything to find in this Forum.

If you can't find the most popular post in the entire How-To forum, you are going to have problems learning Linux :? http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=81

Copying an image to SD card: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=254

If you have further questions and/or requests for help regarding kernels and images, please start a new thread.

Kali isn't an officially supported distribution, so you have to modify the update script in order to update Kali.

@mdrjr may add Kali to the list at some point in the future, but for now, modify "kernel-update.sh" script to force the ubuntu_update() function:

Code: Select all

start_up() {
	# try to clear up old stuff
	rm -rf $TEMP

	# get board
	get_board

	if [ -f /etc/hk-debian ]; then
		echo "*** Debian Found"
		export DISTRO="debian"
		debian_update
	elif [ -f /etc/fedora-19 ]; then
		echo "*** Fedora 19 Found"
		export DISTRO="fedora19"
		fedora19_update
	elif [ -f /etc/ubuntu-server ]; then
		echo "*** Ubuntu Server Found"
		export DISTRO="ubuntu-server"
		ubuntu_server_update
	elif [ -f /etc/lsb-release ]; then
		echo "*** Ubuntu Found"
		export DISTRO="ubuntu"
		# HDMI Retro Compatibility with 3.0
		install_udev_hdmi_compat
		ubuntu_update
	elif [ -f /etc/fedora-release ]; then
		echo "*** Fedora Found"
		export DISTRO="fedora"
		# HDMI Retro Compatibility with 3.0
		install_udev_hdmi_compat
		fedora_update
	elif [ -f /etc/SuSE-release ]; then
		echo "*** OpenSUSE Found"
		export DISTRO="opensuse"
		# HDMI Retro Compatibility with 3.0
		install_udev_hdmi_compat
		opensuse_update
	fi
}
change to:

Code: Select all

start_up() {
	# try to clear up old stuff
	rm -rf $TEMP

	# get board
	get_board

		echo "*** Ubuntu Found"
		export DISTRO="ubuntu"
		# HDMI Retro Compatibility with 3.0
		install_udev_hdmi_compat
		ubuntu_update
}
