Thanks
Can you try this attached build? I'm trying to roll back to a "last known working" code base before I move on with the display changes.
(The mutex SPI bug is still there and the bios still need the new path.)
Here are my observations:
1.27: Stopped showing the bios intro. It works again after correcting the directory. Not sure what to do with the fds bios though.
!.27.1: Broke the ingame/select ingame menu.
1.28a1: Broke mutex SP1. GB and GBC bios working. Menu working. Games working.
1.27.2: Similair to 1.28a1. mutex SP1 still crashes. Menu working, the GB and GBC bios are working too.

I have one quesiton. What is the FDS bios about?

Big preech

Thanks for the feedback. The mutex issue is more annoying than truly problematic but I will have it fixed (or worked around) for next month's release.

The FDS bios is for Famicom Disk System games. If you add it then some .fds games will boot (put them in the nes folder) but they're not playable (yet).

If you want to try, the attached build gets rid of the spi mutex completely but I was having performance issues in GB/GBC games.
(I don't know the cause yet but it's unrelated to the fix.)

What do you mean by performance issues? Like framdrops?
If so, on which games?
I'm sorry I'm not as active, I'm also working Anbernic 351M testing.

Testing right now. Mutex is fixed! Bios working, menu working.

Cheers!

EDIT: Quite frankly, the 1.28a was finie appart from the mutex.

Yes I've noticed in first levels of Wario Land and in Super Mario Deluxe. It will affect others because even just sitting on the title screen of pokemon CPU usage is 20% higher. I will stick with older esp-idf for now but either way the spi mutex issue is gone!

Thanks, I also appreciate the time you invest in this to make this little device better. Underpowered devices have a charm and the Odroid Go have an unmatched battery life. It's amazing to be able to play on what is basically a wifi chipset.

Cheers!

Hi Ducalex,

just wanted to check in to see if there is any progress on Famicom Disk System support? I have a few titles at hand, and if/when ready would be willing to test it.

And thanks for all your work on supporting this little gem, I hope we get to see a successor some day.

Not yet. There are accuracy issues in the NES emulation that makes the BIOS freak out because the expected disk timings aren't respected and that will be complicated to fix. Well. It's certainly possible to work around it. I just haven't taken the (to me) unpleasant time to disassemble everything to fully understand what is expected and how I can fake it  .

My hope is that I get it working before the end of the year! Also if anyone else wants to do it then I'll step aside and happily merge it, just give me a heads up to avoid duplicate work :)

I don't think so. The FDS is fairly well documented on nesdev wiki and I have FCEUX and mesen as references, but the issues are unfortunately deeper in the emulator.

Do you know if FreeDiskSysROM works? It's unclear from the README if it can actually run games. That would be very cool to bundle it with retro-go and avoid needing an external BIOS file! Much more user friendly, I did that for colecovision too.

Otherwise I'm still considering writing an HLE BIOS (in which case your link would help me a lot!). That would give me full control of what's going on + remove the need for external BIOS. But I'm worried about compatibility and we wouldn't have the FDS loading screen and such :( .

Thanks for sharing!

I am not sure, but there is this issue:
https://github.com/jamesathey/FreeDiskSysROM/issues/3

As you said, probably won't help much unless you aim to finish this persons work. Which would be very impressive!

Did you write the BIOS for Colecovision or did there already exist free bios?

EDIT: There is also this issue, which clearly says it is not functional: https://github.com/jamesathey/FreeDiskSysROM/issues/2

I found it on atari age. It was described as a custom remake and there was an assembly listing but I'm unable to find it again, they seem to have moved stuff around. It's possible that it was just modified original but I'm too scared to check because then I'd probably have to remove it...

I managed to reproduce the issue but it's a bit hard to track down the cause. Probably an interrupt issue.
Do you know if the game works in other ODROID-GO firmwares like Go-Play?

Hi, ducalex.
I am curiuos if nofrendo supports nsf music? Sure I can not launch .nsf right now because launcher don't understand it but maybe it's already implemented in emulator?

It doesn't. I can add playback support pretty easily but making a player (controls, on-screen status, playlist, etc) would take more time.

I've added basic NSF support. It can play all the songs in a NSF file (press any button to change song). Max supported NSF size is a bit under 32K right now but I will add bankswitching support and song info display before the release. Let me know if a NSF under that size doesn't work! Not terribly useful right now but it didn't take long to write and I learned about nsf :).

Thank you again! I tried 33kb Ninja Gaiden 3 OST and it works perfect. If I go up to 40kb I have a crash like intended. All in all sound emulation is rather good (at least for NES).
Also, this is the first time I tried "folders" system that you implemened and I like how it works :)
I wonder what OSD you will develop! Looking forward to it.

The palette support is done but I can't enable it because when games run in SGB mode they then expect more hardware that isn't emulated and they crash.
Some games only use the SGB most basic palette feature but most access at least a bit more. So I think I'll have to implement full SGB hardware support before I can merge that change in...

It's better than nothing but I still hope to do real subfolder navigation eventually :geek: .

Also, if/when a full nsf player is added, I will add an extra NSF tab to the launcher (Which could be hidden of course and the regular nes tab would still accept nes/fds/nsf).

Hi, ducalex
I was too curious to test your new commits on github and I compiled them during my launch break.
I tested couple of nsf files with size about 40 kbs - now it works ! :D

What do you think about increasing brightness in doom? Right now I feel like I need to make it brighter to feel comfortable. This is how daedalus (nintendo 64 emu) do with doom 64 to make it more comfortable to play.

Currently if you go in the cheat menu there is a cheat to toggle light amplification.

But yeah adding a real multi-level gamma option would be a good idea! (There is a gamma setting burried in the setup menu but it doesn't correctly apply to the video mode we're using and the setup menu is annoying to navigate anyway.)

New release: Retro-Go 1.28 is now available! Download via top post or github.

Changes since 1.27:
- GBC: Dinky Kong & Dixie Kong (and probably others)
- GBC: Fixed SRAM saving not working correctly (thanks to Jarrad Edwards!)
- NES: Added basic NSF support (still no gui, sorry :()
- NES: Added support for mapper 30
- SMS: Performance improvement
- DOOM: New PrBoom port included. (DOOM I, II, SIGIL, and Freedoom work well but occasional OOM crashes remain)
- Launcher: Got rid of the occasional SPI mutex error
- MRGC G32 (GBC) is now fully supported (Hopefully)

Thanks everyone for testing!

Note: DOOM was added for my own convenience, I was working on my other port but it's just nicer to work within retro-go's features :). If the small bump in size is a problem please let me know and I could make available builds without it (or without SNES) !
Note 2: On github I've uploaded a new covers.zip with doom covers if you want that.

I wonder will this cure strange bug with transferring my save file to newer pokemon polished crystal version (photo attached). Corruption is there even if I load save with different emulator (on android or PC)

btw doom port is a miracle

It's a bit hard to squeeze everything in an intuitive way so I'm open to any suggestion regarding the map or other missing features. I will most likely combine the main menu with the options menu somehow, leaving the VOLUME button available for map again.

Otherwise do you think that adding a "show map" entry to the menu would be "good enough"?

Yup this fix by Jarrad fixes the .sram file so it should be portable between emulators again!

Otherwise do you think that adding a "show map" entry to the menu would be "good enough"?
I vote for this option. I play doom A LOT on android/vita/pc and use map only once in a while. Also I like the way menu organized right now.

I agree. This would be great.

This is a weird crash log, I'm not sure what caused it. Does it happen only when speed up is enabled for a long time? I'm attaching a test build with the watchdog reworked, maybe it will fix the issue...

I'm also working a new interface for the launcher so that's also in this build for anyone who wants to try :).

Edit: Attachment didn't work, I've uploaded it to github. MRGC GBC build also included but completely untested, my device is broken.

I was playing x2 speed indeed. This is my usual speed for this game, so I am not sure about x1. For some strange coincidence I had this bug both times when my pokemons where leveled up :D Will test new build today and give you feedback.
i like how new interface feels but I hope this is not the end, because for now I see only +1 step to begin playing games. it was more convenient when I got to roms list right from the powering on.
Also, what about pwads support for prboom?

Added:
Grinded up few more levels and beat half of elite 4 without any glitches. Hope everything is fixed with this build!

Don't worry, I thought about people like you! There will be an option to start inside the tab as before (it might even be default) and you can still switch tab with start/select. The only difference for you will be that gradient or black backgrounds are no longer available. (But they can be customized via the sd card, there will be instructions).

PWADs are supported. If you select one in the launcher it will launch using the first IWAD it finds (usually doom.wad or doom1.wad).
For example SIGIL works pretty well, but it's a large mod so it runs out of memory quite quickly :(.

Note: There is currently no way to select which IWAD to use when selecting a PWAD but that should be fixed in the near future!
Note 2: There is no deh support however. If you show me a PWAD that needs it I might be able to add a partial implementation of it though.

Now I get it. Most of pwads require doom2, so my solution was to rename doom1.wad to doom_one.wad and let retro-go to choose doom2.wad for any other pwads. Now Scythe runs perfect.

Also, is it possible to add mapper 90 to nes ?
https://archive.nesdev.com/map90v20.txt
it is requred to play super mario world bootleg.

New info on latest build: sometimes I get crash while launching game (cold boot or from roms list). log in attachement.

I had a quick look since the doc says it's similar to MMC5 (which it is) but it's different enough that I can't reuse the code. So it doesn't seem to be worth the effort at the moment but I'll add it at the bottom of the list of things to do :) .

I wasn't able to replicate the bug but I've made adjustments, can you try the attached build?

Also there is a setting to open tab on startup but it isn't in the gui yet. You can manually add BrowseTab setting to your retro-go.json as such:

Code: Select all

{
	"launcher":	{
		"BrowseTab": 1,
		"SelectedTab":	9,
		...
	},
	...
Note: If you edit your config BEFORE running this firmware, the file will be in /odroid/, otherwise /retro-go/config/. (It will be moved to the new location automatically.)
