This happens on every system/game until i reboot firmware. This was after about 3 days of playing 4-10 times a day in short burst
Thanks for the photos. To exclude any LCD problems please do this: When a game is currently glitching press MENU, then START, then Screenshot. Then verify if screenshot.png on your SD Card is glitchy like on your screen.
Note: You may have to try a few times, sometimes retro-go produces broken PNG files...

i took the screenshot with glitches everywhere

if i press any menu bottons and return to game the screen appears fine until sprites move again

Perfect so it's clearly a drawing/blitting issue. Can you try disabling scaling and filtering in the menu and see if it still glitches? That would help eliminate large portion of the drawing code.

I'm attaching a special build with partial screen updating disabled which is what I'm suspecting to be the issue so far. Let me know if it helps.
Otherwise please follow my previous message and report if filtering or scaling affect the glitching.

Thanks

I picked up my Odroid Go for the first time in a while and updated to the latest Retro-Go firmware and the improvements are great. However my cover art that used to display fine on the previous build will no longer display. I have them set up still as per the folder structure on the GitHub. Can anybody help?

I modified the PNG loader a lot to fix crashes and other issues, so that is very possible.
Can you send me a few of the images that fail to load so I can find and fix the problem?

Edit: Also I haven't tested the older .raw covers in a while but I changed some of its code so maybe I broke it. If that's what you're using just let me know, I won't need samples.

Hi dulcalex, thanks for the reply. No game images at all load. I'm using the scaled down png's for boxart and file size is minute.

It's been awhile since I've picked up the Odroid Go and this firmware. Happy to see that this firmware is still being maintained and seems to have some nice improvements. I'm gonna flash the latest later today and give it a spin. Hope you're still doing well ducalex! :)

Please flash the attached build and move around a bit in the launcher and then do:
- Menu -> Debug -> Save app log
and send me the log.txt created on your SD Card.

Thanks, i'll try that later. On a separate note, there is a Gameboy ESP32 product sold by MyRetroGamecase and I was wondering whether your firmware would work on that and what would be the detrmining factors to make it work?

Quite interesting, I was working on a GBC ESP32 kit myself!

From a quick glance at their .fw file it seems it is derived from one of the Go-Play forks and the hardware is very similar (probably identical) so a port should be easy. I would just need high resolution photos of the PCB or maybe the source code (they should give it to you if they respect the GPL).

That being said their firmware seems pretty nice as is. The launcher is lovely and it has wifi file transfer.

Oh cool. I was just about to come on here and ask if you'd be willing to provide support for that or could I fork your work and do necessary modifications to get it going on that if the sources for the original firmware is available. Good to know you're open to the idea. The feedback I've read seems like Retro-Go is much more ahead in performance. There's still screen tearing issues with NES and other games on the stock firmware.

Ducalex, don't underestimate the job you have done with this firmware in progressing performance compared to stock fw. You've managed to make some PC Engine playable on this which is pushing its limits. Great work. Likewise Christian Haitian with the ArkOS firmware, another piece of great work

The Gameboy ESP32 launcher looks lovely and the mp3 player is a nice touch though I would get rid of the E-reader but it does not have the performance of your firmware which has been optimised over time. Plus this thing with Atari Lynx and PC Engine on it would be awesome.

How do I get to the menu option that says Debug, can't see it? I'm using the 1.25 no-part linked a few comments above

You can't from that build (nobody should use nopart other than for testing btw. It was a test and it has much lower framerate and more tearing).

It seems my previous message lost its attachment. I'll try to attach the build to this post again, sorry about that!

Hi, here is the log.txt file. Thanks again for your help.

Hoping to have some photos of the PCB sent to me in the next couple of days on the GBC ESP32. Nothing more heard on the source code.

Hi, here is the log.txt file. Thanks again for your help.
Thank you, so it's not a loading error; it just can't find images.

Code: Select all

[warn] gui_draw_preview: Image not found at: /sd/romart/col/2/275C800E.png
[warn] gui_draw_preview: Image not found at: /sd/romart/col/2/275C800E.art
Those images are definitely in both the old romart pack and the pack I provide. Also I don't think it's an SD Card issue if the games play fine...
I would have to guess that you accidentally renamed or moved the romart folder maybe?

That's not terribly helpful other than telling me it's probably using a i2s amp. I'm not sure high res will help that much because of the black solder mask :(.

Do you or someone on discord have the board and would be willing to try a few (risk-free) things?

I don't have one yet. However there is a Youtuber called bornagainnerd who has one and a few guys in the RGHandhelds Discord group. If you can detail what you want them to try, I can relay that instruction to them and get one of them to hopefully try. failing that, we have a month wait for mine to arrive.

Yes thanks. There's a lot of different hardware supported in there so we still have to wait for you to get your board. But I can add right now support for a few things like audio and battery level.

I've uploaded a new build to github: Retro-Go 1.26 alpha 1.

There's a few new things like recently played games but mostly it is just to test if using a newer esp32 SDK version breaks anything.
Anyone with some free time please try it and report any new issue you encounter! Thanks.

I'm testing this alpha against the latest dirty build.

Things I have noticed:
-Donkey Kong Land III on GBC is lagging slightly. I had 93% processor in the alpha vs 88% in the dirty build for the same stage at the same place.
-Monopoly SNES is still good. 93% cpu
-NES 1942 seems ok. 86% cpu usage on the loop on the first level
-PCE bug: pressing menu will freeze the last sound played until you get out of the menu. That sould be muted. Also, all games I tried: CPU 100% usage. Same in the dirty build so it might not be related to the SDK.

A way to disable recent games would be nice ;)

If I see anything worthy of mention, I'll edit this post.

Thanks!

When you say dirty can you give me the exact version or commit hash? I don't think I've touched gbc emulation in a while so I'd like to be able to reproduce the difference.

Agreed. I think I'll replace "Empty Tabs: Show/Hide" by a dialog to select which tabs to display instead.

The PCE menu sound bug was indeed an oversight, I'll fix that.

Thanks for the good feedback as always, Nemo1984!

I used retro-go_1.25.3-8-g6de73-dirty. I have tested a few other games and didn't find any obvious issue. Thanks for your good work.

Hey Ducalex, been a while.
Excellent to see you still plugging away, I absolutely love the enthusiasm.

Was wondering if you'd be keen to come join a retro handhelds discord I've been working on for a bit.

At the second it's mostly been focussed on Android based handhelds and dev but would be great to see more DIY enthusiasts on there.

I'm attaching a special build with partial screen updating disabled which is what I'm suspecting to be the issue so far. Let me know if it helps.
Otherwise please follow my previous message and report if filtering or scaling affect the glitching.

Thanks

I've uploaded a new build with a new option to switch between partial screen updates and full screen updates (I might also add interlaced in the future).
Normally, partial should give a higher framerate and less tearing but it's possible the partial algorithm is buggy or slower in some type of games, I'm not sure.

The setting is remembered per emulator. Let me know what works best for you.

This new build also has an option to toggle individual tabs on/off in the launcher and fixes the PCE sound glitch.

PS: I've also noticed stuttering in GBC in super mario bros and donkey kong when using save states, it doesn't seem to happen on fresh boots. Still investigating...

I'm not currently on Discord but if I join I'll keep that in mind, thanks! I'm a bit out of touch, are android emulators getting popular? I thought the market was moving to full-distro linux retro-arch type handhelds.

The Odroid Go Advanced had a slew of hardware copycats which piggybacked off the opensource nature of the software already available for it, however the next gen appear to all be Android based.

If hardkernal don't have an interest in following up the original Odroid Go, I'll probably end up getting the Playdate console.

Seems to be working !

Still investigating...

this fixes all my issues

thank you

Hello
I have a problem with Big Nose Freaks Out version with mapper 2 (not 71) CRC32 CCDCBFC6. The menu game works fine, but the image is glitched when the game starts. I tried FW version 25.3 and 26a2.
greetings
Michael

Hi!

All ROMS I find use mapper 71 so I assume it was patched? Anyway that isn't the problem, they're mostly the same thing. I have just added support for 71 and also reviewed mapper 2 and everything seems to work as nesdev wiki says it should.

But, according to MESEN, the header lies about mirroring:

Code: Select all

[DB] Initialized - 15541 games in DB
PRG CRC32: 0xCCDCBFC6
PRG+CHR CRC32: 0xCCDCBFC6
[iNes] Mapper: 71 Sub:0
[iNes] PRG ROM: 256 KB
[iNes] CHR ROM: 0 KB
[iNes] CHR RAM: 8 KB
[iNes] Mirroring: Horizontal
[iNes] Battery: No
[DB] Game found in database
[DB] Mapper: 71 Sub: 0
[DB] System : NesNtsc
[DB] Board: CAMERICA-ALGN
[DB] Mirroring: Vertical
[DB] PRG ROM: 256 KB
[DB] CHR ROM: 0 KB
[DB] CHR RAM: 8 KB
[DB] Battery: No
[DB] Database info will be used instead of file header.

I will see if I can integrate MESEN's database to detect these things. I'll come back to share a build with you once it's done!

Hello

This is some weird rom I found. I know that mapper 71 is not implemented, so I found one with mapper 2. Micro Machines also did not work, but I managed to find one with mapper 2 and they are OK. According to the information in the header, both roms use mapper 2 and vertical mirroring. Both do not have CHR rom, only 256kB PRG ROM. It's great that you added mapper 71 because I like a lot of games with it.
greetings
Michael

I know well you must need an example ROM file for more efficient emulator development.
But, please don't share any commercial ROM files in this forum.
We will delete @Johny_Bit's attached file within a couple of days.

It seemed to me that I saw attachments with roms on this forum, but since it is inconsistent with the regulations, I will not attach them. I live in Poland and here copyright law was passed in 1994 and games from before this year are not covered by it. I am looking forward to the next version of Retro-GO with mapper 71.

I'm having some strange behavior with rom files that are in subfolders. They are showing up like this with only partial file names and fail to launch. Some of them show up correctly and launch as normal but a lot of them do not.

Oh in that case I'm afraid my recent changes didn't improve the situation much. Currently the game (rom 71 H) now boots and the intro plays fine, but the gameplay scrolls all over the place which is probably what you described. I agree it still seems like a mirroring issue but that's probably on the PPU side because the mapper seem fine. It will take a bit longer to debug...

Can you give me the full path of a few of the roms in this picture? I'd like to see which parts is mangled by retro-go so I can have a better idea to where to start looking!
Thanks
