I'm going to be that guy and ask, will this ever be able to run Dragon Warrior 4/Dragon Quest 4?

Been following and using this for a while and have been curious if that will ever be a thing on the Go

Bug report, 2020-08-01 release

I have 5 gb 10 gbc games, nothing else. When I change "Show empty" to No, the odroid locks up when I navigate left of game boy or right of game boy color. Screen freezes and it says Loading directory. I'll just leave it to "yes" for now but I would love that option to be fixed, since I personally only care about GB and GBC.

Thanks for your work!

I can check them out, I don't think they've been reported before. Can you tell me what is the issue?

I'm attaching a beta of the upcoming release if you want to try, show empty has been rewritten among other things and should fix all issues.

PS: I'm switching to version numbers instead of dates. Nothing fancy, every release will increment by one 1.18 1.19 1.20 and so on. Dates are causing confusion on my side when working with multiple past and future releases.

Sorry for the late reply, but in just about every Odroid Go OS Dragon Warrior 4 just boots into a blank white screen and won't even start.

I haven't tried the latest beta but it happens on every version I've tried up to 2020-08-13

New release: Retro-Go 1.18 is now available! Download via top post or github.

Changes since 2020-08-01:
  • RETRO: Favourites support (let me know if it can be improved)
  • RETRO: Fixed misc navigation bugs
  • NES: New MMC1 implementation to improve compatibility (eg: Dragon Warrior 4 now boots but crashes for other reason)
  • NES: Battletoads "fixed" (workaround. still glitches, but it seems playable)
  • GBC: Fixed garbled tiles in some games (eg: Speedy Gonzalez)
  • PCE: Fixed horizontal lines in some games
  • SMS/GG: Improved performance, 25% less frameskip
  • ALL: Fixed stutter when changing a setting (on slow SD Card)
  • ALL: Better panic handling that might show the crash reason now
Let me know if there is any issue, especially with NES or favourites!

@blerplederple4: Now it starts but crashes. I'll keep working and share any progress.

The fellow is doing us all proud.

Honestly I'd happily recommend the Odroid Go to anyone wanting a good 8-bit emulator.

Ducalex turned a fun novelty into a fantastically usable gaming device.

Hi, i've been playing lots with this great firmware, however how can i rotate certain lynx games? The rotation option is greyed out on games that need rotating like Raiden etc.

Thank you guys for the nice comments!

@Niknice:
There was very little interest/feedback in Lynx so I stopped working on it... But I'll be happy to add auto and manual rotation support in the next release :).

Here's a test build with display and dpad rotation. It should auto detect most games. If you can confirm that everything works I'll include in the next release :).

Thanks

If a game isn't correct when Rotation: Auto, can you tell me the CRC of the game and which rotation it should be? (in the launcher press B on the game to see the CRC). I will add it to the auto list.

Sound is definitely something I'd like to improve for Lynx and PCE!

Good evening.

I am beginning to consider rebuilding compiling environnement and maybe append some test builds, like the latest commits I have been eager to test. I have done so before, but the last thing I have done was Triforce.

Is it a bad idea?

I made some efforts to get retro-go to be the easiest project to build for the GO, I'd be happy to have feedback if my instructions and bundled tools were good enough :).

But I'll be making a release tonight or tomorrow. There isn't much new for the user since the last release (mostly dev stuff) but I'll stick to my monthly release!

New release: Retro-Go 1.19 is now available! Download via top post or github.

No new game fix in this release, just lots of internal changes...

Changes since 1.18:

Visible changes:
  • LYNX: Rotation support
  • LYNX: Added cover art (only on github link)
  • ALL: New medium font size (Not sure it looks good, I'm thinking about adding better fonts...)
  • ALL: Slightly faster boot
Internal changes:
  • SMS: Refactored the z80 emulation for more performance and smaller code size
  • GBC: Misc cleanup for smaller code size
  • ALL: Python build scripts. Bash, GCC, and mkfw are no longer necessary
  • ALL: Implemented a basic profiler based on GCC function instrumentation
  • ALL: Netplay code now works on esp-idf 4.0 (netplay itself still not working!)

It's quite possible that I broke some games in SMS/GG so be more attentive to that.

Thanks everybody for testing! :)

Found this earlier today, and I must say this is great!
One of my few issues with the Odroid GO was that it couldn't play the NES Koei games and I saw you were working on it, any updates on that?

Most Koei games use the MMC5 which I *did* get working but I had to disable it because it slowed down the PPU a lot for unrelated games too.
Can you let me know which title in particular you'd like to play? It's been a while, perhaps I can have a fresh look and find a compromise :).

This goes for every one else too: feel free to remind me of broken games that you want to actually play on the GO even if I already know about it. I have less time lately so I'd like to focus on things that directly improve your experiences!

It's called L'empereur, can you take a look at it? The game starts but everything is super glitched.

I know the cause of the problem in that particular game but the fix has the side effect of degrading performance in other games.
But I'll have a fresh look when I'm done with PCE stuff :).

Legend of Hero Tonma has some "geometry issues". The right most column is missing, which makes it hard to finish the first boss. The upper row is not displaying correctly.

EDIT: Forgot to say it is for PCE, and I think it's particularly suitable for the go :)

I'm attaching a test build with now properly centred cropping (the game runs at 352x242 on the GO's 320x240). You're still losing some of the sides but hopefully little enough to be playable. As for the upper row it isn't a bug (I double checked on other emulators) but it would normally be hidden by overscan (I could add an overscan option).

Wow thanks! It plays much better now. I had no idea it was a higher resolution game. I looked for list a of pce games that uses the 352 in hres but couldn't find any. Only found the extremes that uses 512 hres here: https://nintendo.fandom.com/wiki/TurboGrafx-16 but I didn't try them.
Any chance you could print the native resolution on menu screen? (perhaps right of the frame rates)

Coincidentally I have added 512px frame buffer support in 1.20 but there is no scaling down so it's pretty useless.

I'm not sure it will fit well in the status bar but I certainly could add a debug menu with various interesting info!

I am not sure the were any non-cd games using the 512 hres. Hmm... The games mentioned on that link seems to be for pce engine CD.

Sure, any meta data retrieved from games are potentially interesting. :)
