NES Multiplayer

Unread post by crashoverride » Tue Feb 05, 2019 9:13 pm

An experimental multiplayer capable version of the NES emulator is available here:

Source code: https://github.com/OtherCrashOverride/nes-mp-go
Binary: https://github.com/OtherCrashOverride/n ... 5/Nesmp.fw

This is a work in progress and intended for experimentation (not casual use).

To use:
1) Use the provided .fw file to install the application on two ODROID-GOs.
2) Choose "Start Multiplayer Game" on one device and select the game to play.
3) Choose "Join Multiplayer Game" on the other device and select a host.

To start a new game, restart both devices with the power switch.

Very cool!
I can't wait to test it, unfortunately my colleague who also has an odroid-go is ill, so I'll have to wait until next week :(

Tested and it doesn't work.

Start Multiplayer, then I choose a game, no matter which game I choose it goes to a black screen, whether it be 1943, Ice Hockey, Baseball for NES etc, I eventually gave up. Black screen and nothing after that. Turn off and on, goes back to selection of Start a Multiplayer or Join.

The other oDroid Go "Join Multiplayer" seems like it's working as once selected says "Scanning for host" and sits there as the first oDroid has a black screen, reversed oDroids to try other one as server etc with no luck.

If you can provide a console log from the USB cable, it would help determine the point of failure.

Based on the description, it sounds like its failing at the point it attempts to create an WiFi AP. The two main things affecting success are 1) ensure you flashed the latest odroid-go-firmware (20181001) since it includes the WiFi calibration partition data and 2) if you compiled it yourself rather than using the .fw, ensure you are using the esp-idf 3.2 branch: https://github.com/OtherCrashOverride/e ... 3.2-odroid

Ok so Basil Fawlty "I'm so sorry, I'm an idiot"

I have now updated to the latest firmwares and ice hockey and bad news baseball loads, but they run super super slowmotion the sound repeats a thousand times a second like it's pausing and repeating frames and it sometimes kicks to normal for a 3 seconds then goes right back to super fast repeat glitching. The ice hockey players do move in sync, but the gameplay is unplayable at the moment. 1943 wouldn't even load, just a black screen.

So as forest gump said "I'm sorry I screwed up and ruined your black panther party".

Do not give your odroid a good thrashing with a tree branch if it fails however...

Hi together,

I finaly got a second go now, but when I try to start a multiplayer session, it fails with a black screen, on the console it outputs the following:

E (21106) phy_init: failed to validate PHY data partition
E (21106) phy_init: failed to obtain PHY init data
abort() was called at PC 0x4010338c on core 1

On my other go it works without problems…
I already swaped the sd Cards from one go to the other, but it is always the same device that fails…

What could be the reason for this?

Greetings
Johannes

I think you need to flash the latest device firmware, that includes fixes for wifi calibration data.

Wow thanks for this Incredible fast response!
The trick worked, by updating to odroid-go-firmware-20181001 everything worked.
I will do some more tests with bubble bobble :)
