Buggy Sound when Volume is Low, Low Volume isnt Low enough
Hi.
I just got my odroid go and really like it.
I did all the latest updates, but there are three things that I don't find really perfect:
1) when graphics are scaled, the screen reacts some kind of laggy like there is not enough performance. Is this a general performance problem or could it be resolved?
2) the sound is really good - but only at highest Volume. No Matter what emulator I use, it feels like only some voices are set to lower volume when I lower the volume. The distortion sounds seem to be always at max Volume, so they seem much louder at lowest Volume and the sound is distorted at all.
3) I often play in low volume situations. That's why I claim about point 2. There are only 3 options in volume level, but even volume level 1 is too loud for most situations.
Can I do anything? Can anybody confirm the distortion Problem?

Did you erase the flash before flashing your device?
BTW the newest firmware version has 4 Sound Values

You must first flash the "odroid-go-firmware" version 20180708 with the old flashing procedure: viewtopic.php?f=159&t=31348#p227952
That adds the ability to just use the firmware.bin easy update.

Thanks, that worked. Quite confusing, I understood to flash 20180702 to be able to do the power an b Button trickRicket wrote:You must first flash the "odroid-go-firmware" version 20180708 with the old flashing procedure: viewtopic.php?f=159&t=31348#p227952

Firmware versions 20180708 and later use the next-gen firmware loader (power + B).

Thank you, latest updates worked.
But the sound seems still to loud at lowest level and buggy.

The lower the volume the lower quality the sound, is just how it works with the inexpensive mono dac used. My understanding anyway.

So... We say it is as it isrooted wrote:The lower the volume the lower quality the sound, is just how it works with the inexpensive mono dac used. My understanding anyway.Molack wrote:Thank you, latest updates worked.

I find the emulation performance really good and there is no noticeable input lag. That's impressing for this Hardware.
So I will manage to live with the buggy volume. For me, a solution could be to solder a resistor onto the speaker. Because I find the lowest setting not low enough, but medium volume is more than loud enough. So I can play at low/medium volume with good sound.

If HK makes a future revision of the board, I'd suggest adding a headphone jack as well. One with mono duplicated as fake stereo.

Re: Buggy Sound when Volume is Low, Low Volume isnt Low enou
The volume is digitally controlled. To decrease volume, sound sample amplitudes are mathematically reduced. Due to this, a reduction in volume is also a reduction in resolution (bit depth). The ESP32 DAC is 8 bit. At the lowest volume setting, sound is reduced to "1.5 bits". This means two things: 1) sound can not be further reduced and 2) low volume sounds will be distorted.
A possible solution would be to insert a circular cut piece of felt (or other material) into the speaker cavity during assembly. This should reduce the overall speaker volume.

Change R1 & R9 resistors to 1Mohm from 100Kohm on the PCB if your soldering skill is okay.
Refer this test report if you really need a quieter sound level.

Thank you very much. I am very good in soldering SMB, but I would never touch my odroid go. I am thinking about buying another one and integrating an potentiometer and a headphone jack as the original Gameboy had. But that seems far away as long as I want to stay marriedodroid wrote:Change R1 & R9 resistors to 1Mohm from 100Kohm on the PCB if your soldering skill is okay.
