The Playdate is scratching a lot of the itch for me, but an open, light, small and exciting device like the Odroid Go is something I will always want to buy.

Yeah, it's a bummer. Still love my Odroid Go and use it a lot. I have people really interested in it ask me about it pretty regularly and then I have to shoot down their interest by telling them they can't get one anywhere.

The same for me, i bought three at the very start and am glad i did because two people were also incredibly excited and it became out of stock very quickly.

There's always Smart Power 3 with ESP32, a display, few buttons and LEDs, and a debug port, if anyone needs a similar hacking platform.

You know that for things to be cheap, they need to be built at scale. 100 units won't cut it. I expect you need to go over 10k to get some competitive prices

This is true for the first batch. If all technological tools and know-how are preserved, maybe even 1k units could be viable. Don't know about plastic cases, though.

Plastic injection vendors require a minimum of 5000 pieces.
This is because it takes a lot of time and money to install the mold on the injection machine and optimize the injection conditions, and there is also a minimum order quantity of plastic resin (raw material for injection molding).
