emulajavi wrote:Since Kodi launches by default, and I remember you saying on some posts that you preferred using Rom Collection Browser to EmulationStation,..... I though it'd better to use it. But maybe those were old posts.
The image exists since 2013/2014 back then EmulationStation was crap and there weren't much alternatives.
It took EmulationStation until late 2017 to include video preview for example, this was working already in 2012 in RCB.
But with all projects, if there are no maintainer it will get worse over time :(
I preferred RCB due to the fact you have everything in one frontend. Watching videos in Kodi, listen to music, playing games..
Back then it was working perfectly fine, now not so much anymore..
It's sad cause it was a good project.
But it seems they are working on it again.. maybe with the next version it's working better again.
emulajavi wrote:So it is expected behaviour that the Rom Collection Browser included with your image doesn't find anything when 'scratching', correct?
Hard to say.. I haven't done that in quite a while. All my games are already scanned from "way back" using RCB back then. So I have texts, video previews, and coverarts and such.
I'm not 100% sure how a clean install acts at the moment.
emulajavi wrote:Currently I have put some ROMS inside the Atari 2600, Genesis and GameGear folders (and Rom Collection Browser found them all) but EmulationStation only shows two systems: Atari2600 and Genesis. I've been able to scratch this two systems with EmulationStation and it gets the metadata, pics, etc...
Yeah that's one of the downsides of EmulationStation it only knows so many systems, and systems it doesn't know it can't scan.
This is another thing that never happend with RCB back then.. you might find the false cover art from a different system, but it always found something, even if it didn't knew the system.
EmulationStation can't do this.

So i tried using your move to HDD script again, but this time without updating anything.
here is some output.

from my recollection we talked about /dev/dm-0 being a good thing,

can anyone please confirm this is running off my ssd now?

also boot.ini on SD card shows "root=/dev/mapper/hdd-root"

looks good :)
/dev/dm-0 13G 4.6G 7.5G 39% /
is a LVM volume on your SSD, so you can increase the size on the fly or even create new partitions if needed.

the SD/eMMC is no longer used and just "parked" under
/media/odroid:
/dev/mmcblk0p2 29G 4.2G 25G 15% /media/odroid/GameStationTurbo

awesome!

so given that this is a LVM, i guess that is why I can not see it in GPARTED.

i wanted to increase this with gparted a tad.

*edit

this is what GPARTED sees

https://imgur.com/a/cUmVwTI

i dont understand LVM obivously. but the previous code show'ed 13gb, this shows a full ssd on the logical.
idealy i need 20gb for gamestation and the rest on a separate partition for files.

Check available space:

Code: Select all

pvscan
increase disk space for "partition" root TO 50GB:

Code: Select all

lvresize -L 50G /dev/hdd/root
resize2fs /dev/hdd/root
Increase disk space for "partition" root BY 50GB:

Code: Select all

lvresize -L +50G /dev/hdd/root
resize2fs /dev/hdd/root
create new partition "ROMS" with 50GB:

Code: Select all

lvcreate -L 50G -n "ROMS" hdd
mkfs.ext4 /dev/hdd/ROMS

so is there a concept for reverting the image, without totally re-installing it?

it seems after much effort i put in to this ssd setup, after playing around with bluetooth a bunch the system has become unstable.
not sure where to start on "fixing" this.

ex kernel panic after pairing/trusting/connnecting bluetooth

cant play 1080p h264 from local ssd.

(everything was lightning fast and perfect a couple days ago...)

Well how should the image know to what point it should revert? ;)

On the SD/eMMC there's still the point before you moved the OS to HDD, so if you change the UUID of the rootfs back to the SD/eMMC it will boot from the SD/eMMC as if you never put it on the SSD in the first place.
But that might not help you much.
You could try connecting both SD/eMMC and SSD to a different PC and copy the content of the SD/eMMC back to the SSD, but keep the fstab as is.
That way you have the OS back to what it was before you changed it, but still would have all the files and folders mounted that are on the SSD.

ok that makes sense.

i suspect maybe something is not right with how the image is handling the ssd.

is there trim and such on by default? or maybe i should be setting up this ssd better?

Yes trim should be used by default but only for "/". Check under /etc/cron.daily you can change it to include other paths, like /home/odroid/ROMS if you need more.

Hmm thought I had this by standard now.
Well just add a script there called fstrim or something and put this inside:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
fstrim /
You can get more paths in there as I said and make sure the script is executable chmod +x /etc/cron.daily/fstrim

But having /etc/cron.daily empty is very odd there should be quite some scripts in there:

Code: Select all

root@gamestation-turbo:~# ll /etc/cron.daily/
insgesamt 72
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 311 Mai 23 2012 0anacron

did another test/fresh image.

this scenario arose again, after setting up the image/kodi/bluetooth/etc.

do you figure its even possible for an installation without trim to become corrupt so soon? (or unstable..not sure which terminology applies)

keep in mind this process is done (mmc-ssd) before "update/upgrade" of your image.

(for whatever reason, the built in migration script only works for me pre-update. post update the system still boots off of mmc. (from your gamestation setup script)

i will try again and update the trim immediately after migration.

trim should only affect ssd write speed, not data integrity.

I don't even know exactly what doesn't work, so I can't really answer that question.
Could also be that bluetooth is causing issue or "etc." :D

Maybe you should write down what you did and what happened at which step, so we can backtrack what is causing your issues.
crooked wrote: (for whatever reason, the built in migration script only works for me pre-update. post update the system still boots off of mmc. (from your gamestation setup script)
Odd, I changed the script cause it did not work under different circumstances, for example if the partition was already mounted under /media/odroid for example it could not be deleted/formatted and the process stopped.
But I wonder why it should work worse than before, as it should be the other way around (did include much more checks than in the original script).
Maybe you can run the script from terminal, or even with sudo bash -x setup-ogst and then check the output when it fails.
This might give me an idea on what's going on/wrong.

will do. thank you.

im going to update/upgrade before migration. it seems more proper.

i suspect something is a foot pre-uprade and corrupting all my settings or data on the ssd.

i wish i knew more about linux...

also got a newer ssd enclosure, maybe the enclosure wasnt being nice.

fresh image, updated and all that via SU

delete all partitions on SSD

your bash script for OGST rootfs/hdd:
first try

Code: Select all

re-delete partitions and try again

Code: Select all

That is not an issue, that is normal. It tries to create a link on the boot partition, but since this is a fat32 partition it can not make links.
You can ignore this.

+ msgbox 'Something went wrong while creating pysical volume for LVM'
+ whiptail --backtitle 'ODROID GameStation Turbo Setup ' --msgbox 'Something went wrong while creating pysical volume for LVM' 0 0 0
+ exit 1
This means it can't create /dev/sda1 (probably cause it already exists)
But yes, this is the issue here:

Code: Select all

++ ls -s /dev/sda /dev/sda1
+ '[' 1 -ge 2 ']'
it should be ls -l instead of ls -s
that is why it says [ 1 -ge 2 ] cause it only outputs ONE line instead of 2 :(
So I need to fix that.
You can try yourself by editing /usr/local/sbin/setup-ogst and try to find and replace this "ls -s" with a "ls -l" but be careful, the script is huge.
You probably find it easier if you search for "hdd" first.
Also if you don't value your data on the SSD you probably want to delete this partition, as it might be the entire harddrive.

i will start from scratch with your script/update

thank you

found only 2 instances in the script, sound right? change both?

Code: Select all

 NUM_PART=`ls -s $USE_DEVICE* | wc -l`
                                fdisk $USE_DEVICE <<EOF

This is the /media/odroid which is the automount point.. same as if you plug in a USB drive.. it has nothing to say.
/ is the root partition that is the important part and / is located on /dev/dm-0 which is an logical volume.

hi, i am having a little trouble running the startup off of the eMMC/MicroSD? The board powers on, i see the terminal script running, but shortly after part of the script, it resets the Odroid? I'm using a Sandisk Ultra 64GB MicroSD card, i flashed ODROID-GameStation-Turbo-3.9.6-20180619-XU3+XU4-Jessie.img using etcher. Anyone have any ideas? The power Supply i'm using has an Output rating of: 5.0V @2.5A, i know its not the recommended 5.0V @4A PSU but just to get me past the Startup process i thought it would be sufficient. I intend to swap it out for a rated 5.0V @4A one in the next couple of weeks. Can anyone share some help on my startup isssue, besides the obvious PSU issue?

Based on previous experience, the psu is the issue. Wait until you get the 4A psu,

Remove any attached USB device, in fact you should probably remove the Monitor/TV as well, power on the system and wait a while. If you see the blue LED keep blinking for a minute or two (no restart and such) re-attach TV and and later USB devices such as Keyboard.
The boot process uses A LOT of CPU power, and the 2.5A PSU may not be sufficient, once you're on the desktop after the boot process, the power usage is lower and it should be fine to connect devices again.
You could then lower the CPU speed, or even the cpu governor, to keep it running with a 2.5A PSU, but you will not have full performance and at peeks the system may still crash due to too much power usage.
So using 4A is definitely better.

Please Note: using a USB stick or even worse an external HDD is impossible with 2.5 A PSU.

also tried installing libcec4 with dependancies, but said must install "URI's in list"

I have a few things going on. First is I recently setup my xu4 with gamestation turbo on it on my sony bravia tv and the screen runs off the edge. Can xrandr scale the image? I looked it up in the xu4 manual and it said something, but did not work. I typed in xrandr --help and nothing makes sense that would crop my screen. How can I adjust this?

Also, how can I set the default resolution so when I reboot the system it comes up where I left it?

I am also having trouble getting into the settings using the icon on the desktop. It prompts me for a password then the window disappears. What might be causing this?

Lastly, when I start emulation station I have not been able to find a way to quit other than cont+alt+del. is there a way to quit without rebooting? Can I stop it if I am logged in thru putty?

This comes from your TV, and your TV should have an option to disable overscan. Check the options on your TV maybe where you can change between 4:3 and 16:9 you can select something like "just scan". "PC mode", or something similar.
Sometimes you have to go to the picture settings of the TV and underneath the 4:3 and 16:9 you have another option that allows for "Just Scan" or something.
xrandr won't help here.
dstair wrote:Also, how can I set the default resolution so when I reboot the system it comes up where I left it?
Normally it should, yes. You can adjust /boot/boot.ini to select a specific resolution at boot, but it's more important what you setup on desktop.
There's a save or apply button on the screen resolution and the system should stay on it even through reboot.
dstair wrote:I am also having trouble getting into the settings using the icon on the desktop. It prompts me for a password then the window disappears. What might be causing this?
Not sure, what password did you try? It should be "odroid" or if you changed the password of your user, than it's that password.

I think F4 is the normal exit button for emulationstation... using putty might not help as emulationstation might just be restarted if you kill it.

you have to start emulationstation at least ONCE with emulationstation_start instead of emulationstation to fix this.
There were some changes in the resource structure of the system which causes this issue.
The developers moved certain folders which are no longer found from emulationstation and emulationstation_start fixes this for you.

Hey Meveric, This is a fairly old TV with 2 HDMI inputs and 1 PC input that is VGA. I cannot get it to work right at all using VGA which is the PC in. Is there a way to adjust the borders at all like bring in the offset for the edge of the screen all the way around? I know I can make adjustment on my Rberry pi, just thought there might be a way to dial it in.

The C2 can manipulate the physical layout of the screen, but on the XU4 I don't think there is an option for this.

Right. Exynos HDMI driver has no option to adjust the overscan size unfortunately. :(

Unlikely, even if the display is rather small and you can't interact with it, it also is not very fast (20FPS).
Phoenixkonsole wrote:I have seen the N64 thing and i find it funny.
That is something different and has nothing to do with X11, but yes that works on a cloudshell 2 display as well.
Although it might not be as fast as the OGST Kit

Hey folks,

Having a couple of small problems with the image.

I installed OGST a few days ago, running it off of a 64GB EMMC. First thing I did after flashing the image and upgrading, was update Kodi according to the commands in the parent post, and this is what 17.6 is giving me now;

1) Getting a lot of black squares where there should be icons. Things like the player bar doesn't show up, and half the time, the "selector" doesn't show me where it is. Any tips on that one? Googling around, and some folks made it seem like it could be a GPU driver problem, but I'm at a loss.

2) Since I use it to playback videos at night when I'm going to sleep, I'd like to be able to use the built-in Kodi function to shutdown the whole machine after 5-10 minutes of inactivity. It seems when that comes along, however, the whole machine just freezes up instead of shutting down. I've noticed that Kodi half the time likes to freeze up when exiting the program as well, which makes me think these problems are related. Any fix for that one? If downgrading Kodi is the solution, could you walk me through that process?

3) Is the XU4 fast enough to playback 1080p60 h.264 video? They're playing back slowly and choppily so far in my experience. Audio will play crystal clear, but the video will be nowhere near fullspeed. 720p60 however has been fine.

4) I installed the Quake 1 port off of your repo and popped in the PAK files, but it runs at around 1-2 FPS on launch? Q2 and GZDoom are fine though.

5) Lastly, and I don't expect too much help on this one since it's not anyone's software around here, but I'm trying to get my Steam Controller to work with this thing (perfect controller for these old FPS's!), and SC-Controller https://github.com/kozec/sc-controller would be a dream if I could get it to work. I ran the python scripts to install and didn't get any errors, but I can't seem to launch any sort of program. If I plug the controller in directly, though, some of the buttons work and the touchpad works out of the gate. Sadly gyro doesn't, which makes the thing little more than a glorified touchpad. Any tips or hints on what I may be doing wrong on that front? It says it requires GTK 3.22+, and I've been able to decipher than the image runs GTK 3.14. I think the system sees it as M&K rather than a joystick, so my next move is just going to be rebinding the keys in system preferences. Not sure if the gyro can be enabled there or not.

I'm very, very new to linux. Love the image so far, and reading through this thread, meveric's support and patience is commendable to say the least, ha.

This is an issue with the default Skin of Kodi 17, download and install any other skin and everything will look alright.

Kodi has never been very stable, it gets worse if you try to use CEC, then hanging is nearly guaranteed.
You can always use the key combo CTRL+ALT+K to start/stop Kodi, I added this due to the many issues with Kodi.

60 FPS can be a little bit hard on the system, especially with X11 desktop running. I'd suggest using 30 FPS which should work fine.

What did you install for Quake 1? There are tons of ways to get Quake 1 running, and if you have 1-2 FPS my guess is you installed something that uses OpenGL which is not supported by ODROIDs
And you either have to use a different program for it, or start it with gl4es which is a OpenGL -> OpenGL ES wrapper.

Not sure about the SC, never checked into it. But try "antimicro" it's rather good when it comes to detecting controllers and mapping them.
Also you can always check under /dev/input/ if the controller is found as a "joystick" /dev/input/js* or mouse/keyboard /dev/input/mouse*
But my guess.. the Kernel is way too old to understand that controller.

Meveric,

I was playing around with the toolbars and added a few around the screen as you can see in the pic. Then I was adding rubber feet to make the enclosure stop vibrating on the tv stand, and hit the power button. Now I cannot start the OS, all I get is what you see in the pic. I can still putty in to the xu4. Can you tell me where I can find the file that has the toolbar panels so I can delete them in putty?

try ctrl+alt+t on the desktop.. if you can open a terminal, try if you can install/start mate-tweak, you might be able to reset the layout here.
else under /home/odroid/.config/dconf/ you should find your user config.. some google pages say you can delete this to reset config.
Maybe if you search on google how to reset mate desktop settings, you find some other methods as well.

Thanks so much for the response, I'll make those changes to Kodi right away and check out antimicro. For Quake, I just typed in "apt-get install tyrquake" to see if it would work (since I've messed around with it on other images) and it happened to get a hit. Guess it's not exactly compatible, ha.

Thanks again for the help!

Tyrquake is a OpenGL variant of Quake1, and doesn't run directly on ODROIDs since ODROIDs do not support OpenGL.
It would work though if you use gl4es to start tyrquake.
Another methode would be to install libretro-tyrquake which is a libretro/retroarch port of tyrquake which uses OpenGL ES instead of OpenGL :)

Meveric,

Thanks again. I ended up deleting the user profile and it created a new one for me. Back in. Now moving on to finishing up my VNC setup to remote access from the other room so I can help the kids when they need help and can see what they are looking at. I have it most of the way setup, just having a few issues. I ran into this when setting the VNC up on ubuntu on my HC1s and HC2. I keep getting only a gray screen, but no desktop or toolbar items. this is similar to what I used in my Ubuntu setup and used it here on the XU4 with GS Turbo. Just not seeing what I am missing to get the desktop and icons and toolbar to show up. Thoughts?

sudo nano /usr/bin/vncserver

#First set the config such that the display shows correctly change this line
