Hi, a lil problem.

I've tried to install the 4.14.14+ kernel but got the following error:

dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-4.14.14+_4.14.14-20180122-xu4_armhf.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/boot/exynos5422-odroidxu3-lite.dtb', which is also in package linux-image-4.9.61+ 4.9.61-20171118-XU3

The file didn't exist on /boot folder.

So I've tried installing 4.9.61+ and the files were created:

uninstall Kernel 4.9 completely first (do NOT reboot until you installed Kernel 4.14 though) after that you should be able to install Kernel 4.14.
Also you might want to clean up boot a little bit.
initrd.img-3.10.105+ initrd.img-3.10.106+ uInitrd-3.10.105+ uInitrd-3.10.106+ vmlinuz-3.10.105+ vmlinuz-3.10.106+ are kept for backup purposes but are not really required.

Gotta hate myself

Before your answer I've removed the 4.14+ kernel, installed 4.9+ and rebooted
Now the boot sequence hangs after finding the HDDs
The heartbeat led is blinking ok but can't get past this point...

PS: kodi update went just fine before that

yes I've had issues with HDD when updating to Kernel 4.9 or 4.14 as well. Change the boot.ini like this:

root=/dev/mapper/hdd-root instead of root=UUID=.........
That should make the HDD work properly again.

You're right, as always.

Got the system back and with kodi 17.6 :)
I'll give kernel 4.14 a try and test all the other stuff I sayd

Thanks once more

if you update from 3.10 to 4.14 this is done automatically..
4.9 had a broken fallback mode though.
installing u-boot again should also make sure that board_name is found automatically.

Nice video and really impressive results.
I think if you add an active cooler to it, it might be even faster, as the throttling is probably still taking place even at 1.9 GHz.
I've seen you do some video encoding in kdenlive in one of your other videos.
The XU4 can also use hardware encoding in some cases.
Also using ZRAM instead of swap-file could increase speed as well.

Kernel and ffmpeg libs with Hardware acceleration are available on my repositories and should work fine.

Hi @meveric!

Could you explain how to install ffmpeg with hardware acceleration? I'm having problems playing videos with kodi (kodi-next-odroid package)

Code: Select all
uname -a
Linux odroid 4.14.15+ #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jan 29 09:01:46 UTC 2018 armv7l GNU/Linux

apt-get install -t jessie ffmpeg

ffmpeg
ffmpeg version 2.6.9 Copyright (c) 2000-2016 the FFmpeg developers
built with gcc 4.9.2 (Debian 4.9.2-10)

many thanks for your help and your awesome work!

First of all let me tell you, that updating ffmpeg has NO influence on Kodi what-so-ever.
Means even if you install hardware accelerated version of ffmpeg your Kodi experience will NOT change.
It allows you to use a command line tool such as ffplay to start videos from command line with hardware acceleration, but Kodi will not change at all.
Also I think the hardware decoder inside Kodi works better than the one in ffmpeg, I'm not 100% sure if that's true, but that what it feels like for me.

Anyway that being said.
You already have ffmpeg installed from deb-multimedia, which is seen as a "higher" version than the one from jessie-backports, therefore you have to tell it you want to "downgrade" the package:
Please try apt-get install -t jessie ffmpeg=7:3.4-3~bpo8u1
If you encounter more issues (for example missing dependencies), please let me know.

So, if ffmpeg has no influence on kodi... why I have very bad performance on kodi playing videos? What can I do?

thanks!

Kodi comes with it's own version of ffmpeg which is statically linked against Kodi, so what ever version of ffmpeg you have installed has no influence on Kodi.
ffmpeg is also only used for software decoding, not for hardware decoding.
Kodi has its own hardware decoder that can use MFC (the VPU of the Exynos SoC).
That is why ffmpeg version has no influence on hardware decoder.

Future versions of Kodi will solely rely on ffmpeg and with that remove the "own decoder", this is when hardware decoding via ffmpeg is mandatory, but this version does not use this.

Why does your Video not work?
That probably depends on the video itself, the VPU on the XU4 is rather old (2013 or even older) and some things did not exist back then, for example H265 (HEVC) that's why there is no hardware decoder for that and it has to be done in software decoding.
Other formats, might simply not work properly, like H264@60Hz. The VPU is not perfect, and not everything is supported.

Can you provide a sample video to analyze what could be the issue?

Kinda a off topic question but kinda not. Would any of your repositorys work with the RetroPie build from ORA? i dont want to start messing with anything and or asking questions when the answer will always be no. trying to be proactive here. i know we all have busy life's

I'm not quite sure, but I doubt it. ORA image is most likely based on fbdev drivers, while I use X11 drivers.
Fbdev drivers, although often a little bit faster are somewhat limiting, as some applications such as Chromium WebBrowser and other application require a desktop environment with mouse support, which will not work under fbdev.
For that and other reason I prefer using X11 drivers.

Also as far as I know the image is based on Ubuntu, as the first build for Retropie on ODROIDs was only available on top of the Ubuntu Minimal image from HardKernel, while I use Debian as a basis of my images and repositories.

Generally most (if not all) applications available on ORA should be available on my image/repo as well. In fact my images probably offer a lot more applications/games/emulators/cores.
For example I've currently 108 libretro cores in my library which should be a lot more than what is available on the image from ORA, I also offer different standalone emulators which are known to work better than some of the libretro cores.
Some emulators should be better optimized on my image than what is available on the image from ORA. For example as far as I know my image is currently the only image available that should allow you to play Sega Saturn or Atari Jaguar games in an "acceptable" speed. Others emulators may run better on the image from ORA solely to the fact they are using fbdev drivers.

I have ported a lot of games to the ODROID for example HCraft (a hovercraft racing game), Homeworld, Jedi Knight 2/3, Quake 3, SuperTuxKart, Doom 3, Half Life, Revolt, and many many more.
Which won't be available to the images of ORA.

I'm currently working on theming Attract Mode for my image, something that the ORA team claims is impossible to run on ARM boards, although it's widely available for ODROIDs and RPi for years already.

Still as I said, it's unlikely you can use my repository on the image from ORA. Probably less than 5% of all available applications in my repository will run on the Retropie image of ORA.

Thank you for your response. i hope my question did not upset you in anyway. i kinda had a thought that it would be a no go, but i have 0 knowledge about how these things run or are put together, and so it the reason why i wanted to ask first before making me look like a bigger fool. again thank you for your answer. it was very informative. I will be playing around with your work in the coming days. I was shock on all the amazing games that you got to work on this little board. I cant wait to start playing around with it.

so i will say even before i even start. thank you for all the time and effort that you put in to this. extremely grateful for it.

@meveric
must say i love you have gotten to work. for me the little that i have played around with is sweet. i did come across something odd with my setup. dont know if you can help or not
I have a 8bitdo linked with Bluetooth, linking was not a problem. the odd part is when i press the B button down for anything longer then a quick tap. the game pauses. but i i quick tap it, like for a jump it works as it should

this only does this when i have the controller linked up with Bluetooth. of i use USB. works as normal.
I did go in to Retroarch and mess around with remapping the pause key, no luck

i have no idea where to start to poke around. dont know if you might have a idea where i should look
I did null the Retroarch settings so my remap to unpause the game is gone, but your exit key still works. how do you have that mapped. maybe there is something in there?

I use antimicro to map the ESC key to the button, so it's not configured inside retroarch.
antimicro does also map the key stroke "O K" map to the xbox key (was needed in old mame versions).
aside from that there's nothing that could interfere.

Does retroarch find the controller as 8bitdo or something else? removing the retroarch config is probably not a good idea.

i did not remove the config. i just when in and in the driver part for the joypad i when to null. so any user defined keys stop working.

and retroarch finds it fine. i have two picks 8bitdo and 8bitdo/analog. i did mess around with antimicro a little to get my controller to work in kodi, but it never worked right so i just let it be for now. so maybe i screwed something up

maybe i will try a fresh reload. i dont have anything that i will miss, just some scraped info and Dune Legacy

I Love Dune Legacy :D

Anyway I checked on retroarch, there are a ton of 8Bitdo controllers that are supported from retraorch and should be automapped as soon as it finds a matching ID for the controller.
Code: Select all
ls -l 8Bitdo*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1191 Jan 24 16:33 8Bitdo_24G_SF30_USB.cfg
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1191 Jan 24 16:33 8Bitdo_24G_SN30_USB.cfg

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2034 Jan 24 16:33 8Bitdo_Zero_BT.cfg

So if your controller is any of the above the Controller should work out of the box and was so defined by the Retroarch team themselves.
If you have a different controller from 8Bitdo we can probably add a config for it based on the existing configs for the other 8Bitdo controllers.

well the antimicro was configured for XBox 360 controller and most likely does not apply to all other gamepads.
You can always use ESC go over the Retroarch Menu to exit the emulator. You can also just load the joyconfig.xml file in antimicro and adapt it for your controller.
Be careful though, as a update of my setup-ogst-odroid package may revert your changes, so better make a backup.

@meveric
I hate to ask this as you do not like EmulationStation a whole lot. is there a way to make a bash script to lunch desktop games through ES. So instead of exiting from ES i could just make a .sh file and start Dune Legacy.
i have been playing around with it a little. i get the .sh to exit ES and then it looks like it trys to start, but then just goes back to the ES menu.

or if there is a error log i can look at. i found that ES has one, but it does not tell me a whole lot.
I have played around with XMBC and i just dont really like the menu that much. unless you have some pointers that you recommend on changing

Already part of the image. If you put an .sh script into the LINUX folder ES should be able to start it (haven't tried it lately though).
ExarKunIv wrote:i have been playing around with it a little. i get the .sh to exit ES and then it looks like it trys to start, but then just goes back to the ES menu.

ES is a pain in the ass, I had to do some dirty hacks to make it work.
Let me explain a little. Normally you start a game through an emulator and ES goes in the background waiting for you do be done playing. If you exit the game/emulator it should go back to ES to the same spot where you left off.
Problem is, that's not always working, and in the worst case ES hangs and never goes back. If you want to control your system with a controller only that's a no-go as you have to manually restart ES.
In order to have a workaround, I have a script running in the background that checks if
1. ES is still running
2. any application is running in fullscreen mode (either ES or Emulator is up and running)
3. If both yes, then everything is fine.
4. If 1. is yes but 2. is no that means, we end a program and ES did NOT return in which case, I use my script to KILL ES and restart ES.
So IF you run a program from ES, make sure the game runs in FULLSCREEN mode not in window mode, or else ES will restart as it thinks it's stucked ;)

Depends on what you don't like.
I'm currently working on Attract Mode as a frontend and I think currently it's the best looking one.

i did get some .sh to work. mainly the ones you already had made for cave story and dinothaw. they work great. so i started to mess around with one to get Dune Legacy to work.

Code: Select all
#!/bin/bash

##################################
# prepare for game
##################################

# stop XBMC
/usr/bin/killall -STOP xbmc.bin

# define what antimicro profile to use
profile=$HOME/joyconf.xml

# check if antimicro is already running (should be default) and start it if not
if [  `ps aux | grep antimicro | grep -v grep | wc -l` -lt 1 ]; then
   antimicro --tray --profile $profile &
else
   # reactivate antimicro
   /usr/bin/killall -CONT antimicro

   # change profile
   antimicro --tray --profile $profile &
fi

##################################
# enter starting commands here
##################################

/home/odroid/Desktop/dunelegacy   ( im sure this is what im doing wrong. i have no clue on what is used to start the game. never messed around with Linux for games. one PC )

##################################
# cleanup and go back to XBMC
##################################

# stop antimicro
/usr/bin/killall -STOP antimicro

# reactivate XBMC
/usr/bin/killall -CONT xbmc.bin

Dune Legacy is started from /usr/games/dunelegacy that is where the binary is located.
Simply writing dunelegacy in that line (without any paths at all) would work as well :)

hi!
installed the latest Gamestation Image.
XU4 boots into kodi, and reboot like it was written ...

after the second boot, it starts Kodi. When i try to exit Kodi, i click on the Power Button, the exit Menu appears and i click on exit and nothing happens....and nothing works.....the only thing that still works is ctrl+alt+Entf to reboot or shutdown the machine.

Next time, i managed to exit kodi with ctrl+alt+k but debian crashes/ hangs everytime after 4 Minutes.....

Odroid gets very warm....the heatsink is barley not touchable...

That Kodi hangs every now and then is sadly a known issue. It happens nearly every time if you activate CEC. That's why I created the shortcut CTRL + ALT + K.
Still the image should not crash. It does though under certain circumstances. For example when switching resolutions, or sometimes when exiting applications.

Temperature is shown on the desktop. Up in the status bar there is a tool that shows how warm the ODROID is. 60°C is not uncommon under load even 80~90°C is "normal".
The passive cooler is most of the time not sufficient if you run heavy applications over a long period of time.
Passive cooling system is best for servers in on-demand governor mode where they only have short peeks and heat becomes not an issue.

thx for your fast reply, meveric.

So, what does this mean for me....no Gamestation until you fix the problem?

It happens everytime....the hanging.....when i try to install vino or when i type something in terminal or when i am in the dconfig.......... never tried to change the resolution or something like that

It doesn't sound like that is an issue that comes from the image. As I use the image on a daily basis and many other people use it as well. So the image is not broken therefore nothing i can "fix".

Satanic666 wrote:It happens everytime....the hanging.....when i try to install vino or when i type something in terminal or when i am in the dconfig.......... never tried to change the resolution or something like that

That sounds like there is something completely different wrong. This is not normal or expected behavior so I we should try to figure out what could be the issue.
In the past the ODROID XU4 had issues with some SD cards, meaning that the system run very unstable and even damaged the filesystems depending on the SD cards you were using.
Are you using SD card or eMMC?
Have you monitored the system when the freezes happen? Do you see something suspicious? For example what is the temperature of the board? Maybe the Cooler is not mounted correctly and the board gets too hot.
Have you checked logs after a crash? Like /var/log/syslog to see if there's an indication what could be the issue?

I have intenso SD cards as well.. used them to tackle with some other SD card related issues on the ODROID C1 which also had major issues with SD cards at first.
I prefer using SanDisk Ultra (Not Extreme, or Ultra Plus) as they seem to be the most compatible SD cards so far.
If you can; try a different brand of SD card. Also just so you know there is an option to boot the image from HDD instead of SD/eMMC you still need the SD card for Kernel to boot from, but the entire OS will be on HDD.
In your other thread you said your HDDs are ext4 formated, so I assume you know your way around linux (at least to an extend). If you can create a new partition on your HDD (or shrink an existing and create a new) you can use the setup tool on the desktop to move the OS to HDD. Be careful to select the correct partition though, as it will format the partition with LVM.

Satanic666 wrote:i was wrong, it is the passive cooler version of the board

The passive cooler could be an issue. The image runs in performance mode (aimed for gaming) by default which means it's using always highest clock rate (you can change that using the "ODROID CPU Control" tool under System Tools).
This probably leads to heating up rather quickly especially if you use the plastic case that hardkernel sells.
Check the temperature output on the top line. If it hits 95°C the board starts throttling if it goes higher the board will turn itself off to prevent overheating.
Watching videos doesn't require full CPU (as it's suppose to use hardware decoder anyway) so changing the CPU setting might help dealing with overheating.. also getting rid of the plastic case also helps a lot when it come to overheating.

Sorry haven't had time to configure it yet as the N64 core changed recently.
Start a game then press F1 to go into menu. Select Quick Menu -> Options.
Change the resolution von 320x240 to 640x480 this should improve look a lot, but if you go higher the emulator will most likely get rather laggy.

That should help :)
viewtopic.php?f=91&t=6471

basically just apt-get install yquake2-odroid

haven't tried it in a while though, let me know if there are any issues.

Edit:
Ah forget what I said tyrquake was the Quake 1 Engine :D
so it's apt-get install libretro-tryquake but you have to start it yourself or write a starter in the LINUX folder as a .sh file
Code: Select all
retroarch -L /usr/local/share/retroarch/cores/tyrquake_libretro.so <PATH-TO-ID1>
