Keyboardless mode?

Unread post by JustinOrKevin » Sat Feb 09, 2019 5:32 am

Hey, I just got in the mail my XU4Q and a Gamesir g3w.
I wondered before I dive in:
I would like to use the XU4Q at home most of the time to browse web and so on. Also play games (Espgaluda and Space Megaforce and Zanac are my favs).

BUt when I go to someone's house, I'd like to NOT take my keyboard-- I'd like the OS, either at boot time or later, to go into a keyboardless mode just for playing games. (Maybe this could be achieved by having X windows just start retroarch automatically? but you prob have a better way.)

Is OGST the right OS for this?

If you use EmulationStation as a frontend or Attract Mode you should be able to start and stop games with controller only, in the past this was also working from inside Kodi, but I don't know the current state of it (Kodi gets tiny bit worse with each new version in my opinion).
OGST can do and you can select what Frontend you want to boot into... RCB/EmulationStation/Attract Mode, but it requires some configuration to get everything running. It's not an "everything works out of the box image".
ORA or other images are mainly focused on console experience. Controlling it via controller should work fine and out of the box, but you'll lack Desktop support and applications like web-browser and such.

BTW. the XU4Q is not the best device for gaming, as the passive cooling tends to overheat quickly which might have negative effect on your gaming experience, especially with more complex and demanding emulators, such as PSP, Dreamcast, N64 and so on.
Donate to support my work on the ODROID GameStation Turbo Image for U2/U3 XU3/XU4 X2 X C1 as well as many other releases.
Check out the Games and Emulators section to find some of my work or check the files in my repository to find the software i build for ODROIDs.
If you want to add my repository to your image read my HOWTO integrate my repo into your image.
