[SOLVED] Incorrect Colors on OGST Screen

Post by Audiophile »

Looking for a little bit of help. Just a little clarification and honesty, I'm really green when it comes to this stuff. Though I am willing to do what it take to get it right.

For some reason, the colors on the screen are not correct as in way off. Don't know if there is a simple fix or what the next step would be.

Using a eMMC and used the correct script on the guide.

If there is any additional info that may help, please let me know.

Thanks in advance

Which OS image did you flash?

Anyway, turn off the system and unplug/plug the 30pin flat cable a few times.
And turn the system on again.
If it doesn't help, the LCD module might be damaged by uncertain electrical shock.

In that case, please contact "odroid at hardkernel dot com" with a URL of this thread.
They will help you if you purchased the device from our web-store directly.
Otherwise, contact your local distributor/reseller.

guessing by the last pictures it looks like my distro.
And I'd also say it looks like the connection is not working correctly.. Like the cable is not plugged in correctly or the screen may have an issue.

Correct, it was meveric's image

Did as you recommended concerning the 30 pin connector, and the screen still looks funny.

Going to contact Ameridroid. It could be that this is just defective.

Thanks for the advice and input.

Got another case with screen and 30 pin ribbon cable. Got it up and going, unfortunately I had the same result. Think the XU4's 30 pin connector soldering might not be 100%? I'm kinda at my wits end, and didn't want to have to order another XU4 just to verify if its not functioning correctly.

Any other thoughts or recommendations?

It seems that XU4 has a hardware problem probably. :(

Can you try this test script to double check the issue?
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/soft ... he_tft_lcd

Also check the current kernel version.

My apologies if this is a dumb question, but how do I check which kernal version I am using?

Again, thanks for the ongoing help with this.

I ran the scripts to check the LCD screen. Initially, there was a very small picture of the test image in the center of my Television, and not on the LCD. After I rebooted, and ran the scripts again, the image did show up on the small LCD screen. Unfortunately, the screen is heavily miscolored.

Looks like its kernal 4.14.180

On a side note, I get this notification when I boot my OGST. Don't know if it makes a difference or not.

@Audiophile,
Thank you for the test and pictures.
Give us a couple of days to double check the software configuration.

@meveric,
Can you please check the driver parameters in your OGST image?
Kernel 4.9 or higher
You have to use “force32b=1” driver parameters for correct display if you use Kernel 4.9 or 4.14.
modprobe spi_s3c64xx force32b=1
modprobe fbtft_device name=hktft9340 busnum=1 rotate=270 force32b=1

Thank you all for your help and guidance.

Luckily I really enjoy learning all of this stuff and have patience for it. Not that I will ever be as proficient as most of the community, I have definitely enjoyed my time.

Looking forward to getting this squared away.

Although the image is mine the logo above is not, that is from AreaScouts guide.
I hope you haven't mixed different guides on how to setup the Display, as this may interfere severely.

I have to check how Kernel 4.14 reacts and if there are different code paths on how to configure the Display, although Kernel 4.14 is not recommended anyway, as you loose performance and emulators will run slower than they are on Kernel 3.10 which the image comes with.

The error above should be fixed if you run:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure vhba-dkms
(that is if you also have the headers installed for Kernel 4.14)

@meveric Honestly, it has been some time since I downloaded and put the image on the emmc card. So it is completely plausible that I went between two different guides. Would you recommend starting over and putting a new image on the emmc? If Kernal 3.10 has better performance, thinking I rather go that route. Which might kill two birds with one stone, discolored LCD and kernal 3.10. Thanks for that script, that did get the error to go away.
The main page image has "3.9.6" in the name, is this part of kernal 3.10.
Forgive me with some of the lingo, still catching up on this. :)

The better question is what are you trying to achieve?
By now the image is very dated and is more for people that want to tinker and want to run more than just emulators.
For emulators there are now better images, but if you want to run extra games like Quake3, Homeworld, Jedi Knight and so on which run directly under Linux and not on emulators, then the image is better suited for you, but if your focus is jus playing N64, PSX, SNES, etc. then there are probably better images out there by now.

Re: Incorrect Colors on OGST Screen

That's a very good question. Honestly, just want to run emulators from the old Atari systems up to N64. For the most part it'll be used for 8 and 16 bit generations, and N64. Maybe PSX in the future. I think the console with LCD looks super cool in a living room when operating. Especially when there is company over. No KODI or desktop.

On a side note, I think part of my confusion is that I thought there was one image for all. Initially I had no idea that there was more than one image or that this could be tinkered on for a custom image.

If you have a recommended image, I'd greatly appreciate it. If not, maybe you can point me in the right direction.

Many thanks.

Overall the emulators you want to run should work on each Image fine, N64 is a bit tricky though and performance vary a lot.
The software on this image is a bit dated, cause of this, download of preview pictures may not work everywhere, especially not in Kodi as a frontend (might work in EmulationStation though but I haven't put much work in EmulationStation).

I'm not entirely sure who support the case and display.
As far as I know my image is the only one utilizing videos, others simply show a picture of the emulator that you run.
But I think TheRA (Retro Arena), Batocera and Recallbox had an image that shows the pictures of the emulators, but it's been a while since this was an active topic.
The above images, are more up to date when it comes to only emulation. They all use EmulationStation as far as I know as a frontend.

Thanks @meveric. The videos are really cool, kinda why I picked up the kit. I know N64 has a finicky history in regards to emulation, which I completely accept, so It's not a deal breaker. I appreciate all the info. I'll give your image another shot and follow everything to the "T".

Hopefully one last question, how do I delete the image from the emmc? Didn't know if I could just use sd card formatter or something else.

The Formatter should work fine.
But just overwriting an image must be enough.
