ReactOS an open source Windows Alternative

Unread postby Newfrequency » Mon Mar 05, 2018 2:53 am

This OS is 100% legal since it was built from the ground up.

Reactos.org

It is in Alpha stage.

It only works with x86

It runs all Windows applications.

Its open source.

Could this not work with N1 since its x86

N1 is not x86, but based on an ARM processor like all other Odroid boards.

I bet it's as limited as wine, but the n1 could run it in qemu if you wanted a big overhead, but like i have not needed/wanted windows for ~16 years.

Maybe, but the bottleneck here is the CPU emulation, which will make the N1 run the "x86" at approximately 5% speed of a real x86 processor - it will be VERY slow.

If that is good enough for you, then (maybe) N1 can do that.

Virtualbox is also an Intel (x86/64) only program. It does not work on ARM.

ExaGear is widely used to run x86 applications on ARM boards.. I use it on the XU4 very often and the speed is "acceptable".
You can even run games like Diablo 2, Age of Empires, Star Craft, or Mech Commander on it without much issues.
I was even able to run Unreal 1, the original Unreal Tournament, or Star Trek Klingon Honor Guard in software rendering in 720p.
So it's not all that "slow" ;)

But it's a commercial software so you need to buy it (although we have trail versions for other ODROIDs available).

exagear was about 9 times faster than qemu;

Refer this link too to see the performance of Exagear on XU4 if you really want to run some(oldies but goodies) x86 applications.

Isn't the point with ExaGear that it emulates the Windows API, thus making application (games ect.) emulated faster?

In that case, running a "clone" of Windows on ExaGear - with its own API implementations - would not be faster. If ExaGear's Windows API was used, it would no longer be ReactOS running.

As far as I know, ExaGear is not the same as WINE (which emulates api calls). Exagear is an emulator for x86, which allows you to run x86 linux code as well.

It is more like a combination of Wine and qEmu; i.e. it emulates x86, and speed up the emulation by having the Windows API implemented. This works great for some applications and not so great for others.

Ok then, I didn't know that. In this case it (as well as wine) probably borrows code from ReactOS.

ExaGear does NOT have a Windows API. It is only for x86 emulation nothing else.
We use WINE on TOP of ExaGear for Windows application.

On the contrary ExaGear runs best with native LINUX x86 applications, as they can interact with the system they are installed on. Means it uses the GTK from your host system rather than from a emulated system.
And for that native Linux application run best on ExaGear.
