Support of other Linux

Unread postby tuxfriend » Mon Feb 12, 2018 10:43 pm

Many forum members are inquiring about a new ODROID board, and the time to talk about the next ODROID has arrived.
The major features requested are:
- Faster CPU
- More DRAM memory
- Faster GPU
- Faster storage IO
- More Linux friendly

The specs of this new board looks very nice. It cloud be a replacement of my Desktop PC. What does "More Linux friendly" mean ? Support by Vanilla Kernel? Fedora ? CentOS?

Greetings
Andreas

It means many things. One of which is most ARM SoCs only support Android, not Linux. This means things like GPU and VPU are only usable from within the Android framework.

Most of this "friendliness" is determined by the developer capacity available to submit patches against the mainline kernel and the willingness of the SoC vendor to cooperate with the developer community, e.g. to respond to requests for information.

Even XU4 is Linux friendly. HardKernel provides support for Linux. The only other usable Android distro is done unofficially. N1 will be at least just as friendly.

Upstream works quite well on RK3399, there are some missing bits (mainly GPU/VPU) but apart from that it quite good

To be fair look how long they have supported the T628

The ARM Mali-T628 MP6 is an integrated graphics solution that launched in Samsung’s smartphone and tablet SoC Exynos 5420 Octa in autumn 2013.
