Ubuntu 13.10 Dream Machine for ODROID-X2 (20140101)

Unread post by robroy » Fri May 31, 2013 11:34 am

I created an Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander image, forked from the official XFCE Hard Kernel release, with a core suite of applications for a netbook/desktop computer.

Download the image here:
13.10 Saucy Salamander: http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/ ... 101.img.xz
13.04 Raring Ringtail: http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/ ... 101.img.xz

European mirror by @traxo:
http://odroid.txmonitor.de/

Want to upgrade your existing Dream Machine image?
Kernel updates: http://builder.mdrjr.net/tools/kernel-update.sh

Username: odroid
Password: odroid

Username: root
Password: odroid

Applications: Firefox, Chromium, Xine, XBMC, Gimp, Transmission, Filezilla and Oracle JDK 8.

X11 environments: Lubuntu (LXDE), Kubuntu (KDE), Razor, Blackbox, Openbox, Matchbox and Xubuntu (XFCE).

You may switch environments using the dropdown on the login screen after logging out of KDE Plasma Workspace. For best XBMC performance, use any desktop environment except for KDE.

If you enjoy my contributions to the Hard Kernel community, please consider donating an amount of your choice via the link in my signature.

Customizations left for you upon burning the image to your card:
  • 1. Resize the "rootfs" partition to fit your SD card. This is best done on another Linux system using the GParted utility.
    2. Set your time zone using System Settings -> Time & Date.
    3. Set your language using System Settings -> Language Settings.
    4. Set your username and password using System Settings -> User Accounts.
Improvements and upgrades:
  • 1. To overclock to 1.92GHz, type "sudo gedit /etc/rc.local" in Terminal and remove the "#" from the beginning of the line that starts with "echo 1920000".
    2. Firefox has the IcedTea7 plugin installed for Java browser applets, and uses the built-in HTML5 player which is not compatible with Flash. Chromium has the Pepper Flash plugin installed for viewing Flash videos. Both Chromium and Firefox have the Adblock Plus add-on. The default browser is Firefox.
    3. All upgrades and updates have been run using aptitude, apt-get and synaptic.
    4. All orphaned and obsolete packages have been purged, including the original kernel.
    5. Lots of quality-of-life tweaks, such as setting folder preferences to List View, removing the Battery icon from the Status bar, setting the Chromium and Firefox preferences to their highest privacy settings, and installing wallpapers (/usr/share/wallpapers).
Features in this release: Notes:
  • XBMC performs best when the resolution is set to 720p, which is done by typing "sudo cp /media/boot/boot-720.scr /media/boot/boot.scr" in the Terminal window before rebooting.

Xubuntu window compositing is turned off by default for an optimized XBMC experience. To restore compositing, select "System Settings -> Window Manager Tweaks" from the Applications menu. With compositing on, you may adjust window transparency by holding down the ALT key and scrolling the mouse wheel while hovering over the window's title bar.

Vino VNC server may be started via SSH by typing "vino" after enabling Desktop Sharing using "vino-preferences".

To boot directly to the most recently used desktop environment, type "sudo /usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-set-defaults --autologin odroid" in Terminal, which bypasses the login screen.

The default KDE Plasma Workspace is hardware accelerated, which can be extended to any other desktop environment by enabling the "Kwin GLES Hardware-Accelerated Desktop Manager" task in the Startup settings of the environment. Please note that Kwin GLES affects XBMC speed, so only KDE Plasma Workspace has Kwin GLES enabled by default.

Optional USB and TFTP boot support is available with the updated bootloader by @suriyan (more here: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2722)

More Odroid software by @meveric is available here: http://oph.mdrjr.net/meveric/repository

Im not sure I understand your question, but here is @mdrjrs guide to custom kernel builds: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=81

There are many other how-tos in the same forum.

Thank you!! I tried to set KWin GLES as the default window manager for KDE but accidentally corrupted the environment

I am working on a from-scratch rebuild this week of this image to use Kernel 3.8 with a working KDE/kwin_gles.

Im glad youre enjoying the image!

Username and password are in the first post :? Using a virtual keyboard in Ubuntu sounds like a very frustrating experience. It is not installed by default, but you can add it to your personal copy. Its a package called onboard http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Onboard+virtual+keyboard+ubuntu

Hi, Pros,
Is there any way to downgrade the resolution from 1080p to 720p?
As instructed by How-tos section, I tried to find the .scr file under /media/boot/, but failed, no such a file.
Then how can I change the resolution?
Please advise.
Thanks.

pavucontrol is the only GUI for PulseAudio configuration, except for paman which doesn't control volume levels.

On my X2, I see a two-channel input microphone on the pavucontrol gui, but only when I select "Analog Stereo Duplex" on the Configuration tab. Selecting "Analog Mono Input" only gives one channel for the microphone.

Yeah, I got it done by just copy the boot-720p.scr and boot-720p.txt from /backup/ folder to the /boot/ folder and overwrite the boot.scr and boot.txt.
That's OK.
Thanks for your help!

Awesome! I agree that Ubuntu 13.04 + Kernel 3.8 is a great combination.

I've been using my Odroid X2 as my main computer for about 4 months now, and I carry my U2 in a camera case :D

I really like your image, it's great!
But I have one problem:
I have a 3tb external hdd. It has a 2,5tb ext4 partition on it. The odroid detects it's size correctly, but it doesn't detect the filesystem type. Is there a additional driver for GPT required? Or is this a different problem?

That is a good question!

As requested in @mdrjr's issue guide (http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f ... 5098#p5098), if you create a new thread in the "Issues" section, one of the HK devs is sure to help you out, and it will be easier to find for those in the same situation :)

One of the recent Canonical updates made xine-plugin stop working.

You can fix it by installing gxine-plugin via Synaptic.

I will make sure that the ViewTube plugin is fixed in the next release.

@mdrjr's server is usually pretty fast. There is a European mirror but no torrent (yet).

The md5sum of the .img.xz file is included in the download directory. I didnt run a checksum on the uncompressed file.

Although if you are able to uncompress, that usually means all is well.

I will try downloading the image today and make sure everything is intact.

I just downloaded Dream Machine X2 @ 3MB/s. It's a 2.3GB file that expands to 7.84GB.

The MD5sum for the .img.xz is here: http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/ubuntu/x2/
I use PeaZip to uncompress the xz files .. and it didnt elaborate to what the error was ....
I use 7Zip on my Windows install, which has not seen much use since I finalized the Dream Machine and Pocket Rocket images. My I7 3.5GHz quad-core runs Ubuntu Studio now 8-)

Google Chrome has a Pause feature when you right-click the downloading file.

Are in this release the Mali Drivers and 3D Hardware Acceleration included? Like in "Ubuntu 12.11 Fully Loaded for ODROID-X2 (20130515)".
Is it possible to have 3D Acceleration with HDMI? Or only with LCD?

Thank you.

You could download the image from mdrjr's mirror or from mine. I'm assuming you're trying to download the Xubuntu image for the X2.
From my mirror, situated in New York City, the HDMI image:
http://odroid.mirrors.ofthe.us/Ubuntu_X ... DMI.img.xz
Or, if you have the LCD kit:
http://odroid.mirrors.ofthe.us/Ubuntu_X ... LCD.img.xz
ODROID Boards: U2, X2, XU+E rev.2
Accessories: VU, Smart Power, 13" LCD Kit (for the X2)

"DownThemAll" seems to be able to recover from lost internet and from the computer going into hibernation ...

Iv downloaded the most recent image ... and im now trying to get Qt5 5.1 installed ...

Qt5 has many advances in video rendering(as far as cpu/gpu load goes) ... im told ... and is what the SDR software ghpsdr3-alex requires to build with ...

Qt4 is old and i ask for the makers of dream machine to update from Qt 4.8.4 to Qt 5 ....

Since I don't use QT libraries, it would be difficult for me to test whether they're working correctly.

IIRC, libqt4-dev has a conflict with the Mali driver that adds a twist to the installation.

If you're able to package an Odroid-specific .deb file for QT5 from source, I can include it as an upgrade to QT4.1 in the base image.

Unless I'm reading your post differently than intended, the SD card image doesn't have control over whether boot happens when power is applied.

My copies of Dream Machine, and all my other images, start up when I plug in the power source to the chassis.

"Boot on power" is a decision that would have to be made before the kernel is loaded, otherwise you would always be booting up, then immediately shutting down after loading a kernel with "boot on power" equal to false.. all of which contradicts the concept of "boot on power". Is my logic correct?

In any case, all 4 of my Odroids start reading the eMMC immediately.. I don't remember having had one red-light-only on me if a bootable image is available.

the one i D/L less than a week ago- red lights and stays that way ... is there something that i can change after the fact to get it to bootup when power applied ... all the way to login... i would like it to boot to desktop and no login password

on the Qt5 front .....

from email exchange's on a SDR email list --

Qt-5.1.0 and 5.1.1 build on all platforms except ODROID.

5.0.2 is the latest that successfully builds on ODROID.

-------------

I have no idea how to build a .deb package .... or how to get only Qt5.0.2 downloaded from git to attempt a build.
