CloudShell interferes with WiFi. Very strange.

Unread postby bear » Wed Nov 29, 2017 2:29 pm

Hello,

we've setup your CloudShell 2 unit with 2 WD hard drives and everything woks fine in terms of data storage.

Unfortunately there's so much interference that our WiFi network becomes invisible. The NAS is located next to WiFi router. When NAS is on WiFi SSID is not visible in the list of available networks. When we turn NAS off the network appears as normal. We tried different WiFi channels but with the same results.Since our WiFi is integrated into the router the NAS unit needs to be not far from it.

As far as we are aware there's no radio installed in NAS so we are confused about why that's happening. Have you heard about this problem or have any ideas how to test / fix it?

Thanks in advance.

So, to clarify the cloudshell is connected via cable to your access point? How/where do you check to see if it is listed in the devices list? Windows uses the lldp protocol to do neighbor discovery, which is not enabled by default on Odroids.

The only way I see it interfering with wifi is having it blocking the signals mechanically (the metal in the disk cases absorbs wifi), though it should behave the same regardless of being powered or not.

One other thing that's been reported and might affect you is having upnp enabled on certain routers, but it shouldn't affect wifi visibility, only traffic.

Make sure it's not some external problem. For instance I had a wrt54gl that was jammed by a baby monitor. When the baby monitor was on and streaming the wifi would fail even in direct line of sight with a 1m distance to the AP. So when Junior started crying he would DDOS our LAN :)

Try changing the position, try placing the AP on top of the cloudshell.

Yes, cloudshell is connected by cable to the router and is sitting next to it on the shelf. In that configuration when it's on the wifi ssid is not in the available network list. If we turn cloushell off or move the router a meter away the network becomes visible.
truly bizarre. no baby monitors or any other emitters in sight. strangely when the NAS is on we can still see wifi networks from surrounding offices, some of which are tens of meters away but not our own network.

Since our XU4 board passed the FCC/CE/KCC certifications, its self-radiation emitting power should be negligible.

Is there any MAC address conflict on your network system?
Can you try other well-shielded Ethernet cables?

What router do you have and what firmware. When the cloudshell is on are wired devices able to communicate? Does your router have any logs?

It's a router provided by our ISP. The computers that are connected by cables to the same router work just fine. The only problem is with WiFi. The logs and admin interface show that the wifi is on. The router has a "Neighbors" function that shows all of the detectable WiFi networks and their channels. I made sure that we use a different channels from all of the other networks.

Would it help to try using a wifi signal strength analyzer - running on a Win/linux laptop or a smartphone/tablet ? A comparison for error/working scenarios may shed some light...

I have exactly the same setup (CloudShell next to Modem/Router) and I experience exactly the same problem: when the CloudShell is on, it interferes with my WIFI network.

What router? What hard drive? Specifically.

I have a cloudshell next to my router and it doesn't interfere.

My router/modem is a Arris DG2460

I have a CH660DE modem/router from CBN via Vodafone Kabel Deutschland.

I have a WD Red 2.5" 1TB HDD. However, I don't think this is the culprit of the problem because when I first got the CloudShell, I ran it without HDD, only with an eMCC module, and I still experienced the problem. The interference was so bad that if my modem/router was right next to the CloudShell, my wifi was essentially unusable. This setup https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN8Q8KqtUZkFDZMkPngd4E7XV53IpOlsgCnMoE1ru_plqVPQS2iM8ge0OC79FM0fg/photo/AF1QipPGspG_4vuRfpsp_lov5AhlAID1PjXPIfVFjDZt?key=M0xxaHRXM3RKU1NhYmV3eEdKNVFtNmFsb00yQmRR helps a little, but not completely.

Try to change the WiFi frequency channel in your AP/router settings and let's see what happens.

I’ll throw my name into the mix. Experiencing same thing.

Apple AirPort Extreme router. Cloudshell connected via Ethernet. Intermittent WiFi on all wireless devices instantly relieved when shutting down the NAS.

Just started troubleshooting this.
