Best practices on securing the shield + case on a fridge

Unread postby mad_ady » Fri Nov 25, 2016 9:38 pm

Hello all,

I intend to mount the 3.5" LCD shield + case + c2 on my fridge's (external) wall. I was thinking of using zip-tie (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_tie) to secure some velcro tape (https://www.amazon.com/VELCRO-Brand-Ind ... B00006IC2T) to the case and use velcro to attach to a similar piece glued (or stuck with double-sided tape) to the fridge wall. Not sure how strong or how nice it would look, but - do you guys have more elegant approaches?

Thanks

I would glue four neodymium magnets to the C2 case.

With hotglue or superglue?

I have some leftover neodynium magnets from an old HDD, but I'm worried they might scratch the paint from the fridge. I could glue them to the inside of the case, but wouldn't they interfere with the board inside?

It would be cheaper and a nicer-looking solution...

Either glue will work, hot glue is more temporary if you ever want to rearrange the magnets.

You could glue felt to the magnets to prevent any scratching of your fridge.

I'll take that into consideration, thanks. Need to see where I stuck my magnets or decide which HDD to gut for parts...

Well, a pot-pourri: An internet radio receiver + webcam recorder + home automation dashboard (web based) + voice assistant (like siri, echo).

We'll see when it's done :)

Yes. I'm a bit worried about total power consumption since I'll have all USB ports taken (webcam+soundcard+usb power for USB speakers+BT dongle) and I still have to add LCD shield, while CPU is set to 1.75 and memory to 1.104.
But we'll see. In the worst case I can use a powered hub

Wow, it's been almost 6 months since I asked this question. It looks like I took a lot of time from planning to implementation...

Well, here is the end result - I used hot glue to stick 2 neodynium magnets salvaged from a HDD to the back of the case. The case sticks beautifully to the fridge (and the magnets don't touch the fridge).
The magnetic field from the magnets doesn't seem to interfere with the board/display.

And the implementation failed after two days

The magnets remained, but the odroid fell (it was saved by the usb chords).
Post mortem analysis shows that the magnet pulled off the hot glue from the case.
Should I try super-glue next? Or hot-glue, but this time the glue should go through the case and create some sort of tight hook?

Oh... bad news. :(
Enough hot-melting-glue through the holes on the plastic case might be a solution hopefully.

hope that the heat from the C2 won't melt the glue :D

I hope the hot-melt adhesive melting point is not so low. :(

If you want permanent use some epoxy, super glue will likely work as well.

Ok, take two on the hot glue approach. This time I made a glue blob on the back side, switched the cover over and connected the blob through the vent holes in the case, so it would offer some structural support. Then I placed the magnet in the still hot blob and applied some hot glue on top of the magnet as well. I had the "brilliant" idea to use a knife to spread out the glue (like butter), but guess what? Knives are made of metal and magnets stick to metal :D So, I had to even out the blobs with my fingers instead. Now the case sits on the glue blobs (they make contact with the fridge), so that there is no longer a tension (magnet pulling glue off the case). Let's hope it sticks. :)

Pictures follow:

Front side (toward odroid):

I would go with some epoxy if they fall off again.

What kind of epoxy? Can you share a link to know what I would be looking for?

Any two-part epoxy should work, I would sand the plastic a little before laying down the epoxy.

Something like this:
