Kodi with Ubuntu 16.04.03 - not working? Minimal install....

Unread postby thatchunkylad1989 » Tue Dec 26, 2017 4:48 am

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04.03 on a C2 and have used the minimal .ISO, kodi won't work. it fails to get output when trying to start from terminal, I tried to install Kodi 16 from your site and it kept giving me the latest version :( any ideas on what to do? I want to stick with Ubuntu after trying stretch and archlinux-arm!

Thanks and Merry Christmas. :)

Did you flash this minimal image and install "kodi-fbdev"?

Yep and it's working but not fully, it's only showing a quarter of my screen and it says in settings it's 720p and not 1080p like my screen is!

odroid@odroid64:~$ sudo apt install kodi-fbdev
[sudo] password for odroid:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
kodi-fbdev is already the newest version (17.6+hk2-odroidc2ubuntu9).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Did you set the screen resolution manually via editing boot.ini file?
https://github.com/mdrjr/c2_bootini/blo ... ot.ini#L47

What happens if you play 1080p video?

No, I never. I haven't tried playing 1080p video.
I am using a HDMI to DVI cable, could that be it? I had no issue with the mate desktop....

Setting DVI didn't work, it's still only using a quarter of my screen. I have had no issues with the mate desktop.....

Where did you install Kodi from?
What is the point of taking minimal image an complaining that it is “not usable” when you use it wrong?
I can attach my screenshot of Kidi v17 and write “it’s usable”

I installed it from sakura aka terminal.
How am I using it wrong?
"sudo apt install kodi-fbdev" and it's not 1080p, only 720p and windowed.

...

Cheers.

there are many variants what could be wrong.
once more, you took ubuntu minimal image that implies that you know what you are doing.
writing "it doesn't work" is not going to help you much. it does work for everyone else.

Lol, what?
I know what I am doing, I just can't get Kodi to work. you do a fresh install of the minimal ubuntu image and you'll have the same problem. tested with multiple eMMC's and different ways of setting Ubuntu up.
However, the mate desktop Kodi works just fine.

Please, if you've got nothing constructive to say, don't post at all.

Thanks.

Just so you know, that Kodi version running on Ubuntu Mate, and probably on all other images on ODROIDs is compiled from @OverSun's repository who modified it to make it run on ODROIDs.

I gave up and just installed the mate .ISO and removed libreoffice and mate and installed i3-wm and xfce.
It still feels sluggish compared to the minimal image, though.

Thanks and happy new year. :D

That depends on your version of Kodi.
Either mali-x11 or mali-fbdev depending on your image and your version of Kodi that you run.
Aside that you might have to install X11 drivers, framebuffer drivers and such things, but as I said, depends on your image and your Kodi version.

I don't use fbdev drivers due to many complications with it.. mali-fbdev is required for GPU, aside from that no clue.
Anyway, didn't you just wrote in another thread that you use your ODROID as a Desktop? Why would you use kodi-fbdev in that case? That makes not really sense.

Attach plz here ~/.kodi/temp/kodi.log when you run it under normal user and also the same when you run it under root (it would be in root home folder I guess in this case).

Your user for the desktop probably misses permissions to access certain devices.
For example your user is not part of the video group and for that it can't read the correct screen size or something like that.

Also if you run a Desktop you should use the X11 version of both Kodi and the mali drivers.
Or else you won't have any GPU acceleration available on desktop for example for Chromium or other 3D capable desktop applications.

That could explain why chromium was slow, also slow loading when installing apps etc. thanks for the heads up, meveric! :)

Ok, OverSun and meveric, two problems...

I installed the minimal image and installed "sudo apt install mali-x11 kodi aml-libs linux-headers-c2" and Kodi won't start...

The error is:

/usr/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/kodi/kodi.bin: error while loading shared libraries: libmysqlclient.so.20: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

And If I add this to chromium's flag, chromium doesn't open and logs me out...

CHROMIUM_FLAGS="$CHROMIUM_FLAGS --use-gl=egl --ignore-gpu-blacklist --disable-accelerated-2d-canvas --num-raster-threads=4 --audio-buffer-size=4096"

Any idea on what I'm doing wrong? there is NO kodi.log but Kodi is installed but won't launch because of said error ^ ! :(

two things.
first of all you have to choose, fbdev, or x11. mail-x11 is excluding mali-fbdev and other way around. x11 can run with mali-x11 and kodi should be also built for x11 for that.
your current set looks fine, mali-x11 and kodi are packages that run in x11. for fbdev you would need mali-fbdev and kodi-fbdev. but in that setup x11 will have no acceleration itself. so this is the set to use kodi only as mediacenter (I use it that way, not as desktop, but as really good mediacenter).
secondly your crash seems to be related to pulseaudio, which I personally don't like much. I would advise uninstall packages related to pulseaudio, like pulseaudio, libpulse and stuff with "pulse" in the name. Kodi can work with ALSA for sound and there is no real difference between the two.
give it a try without pulseaudio, see how it goes, if stuff goes south again - logs and output, somebody will always have an advice.

have you added the desktop user to the group video?
have you allowed access to the /dev/am* devices to everyone not just root?
what about /dev/mali and /dev/ump?
Deleting pulseaudio is not the best idea, there are ways to turn pulseaudio off, instead of deleting it.
Kodi can even be started with a command line option telling it to use ALSA instead of pulseaudio.
Other application might need pulseaudio though, but I guess you find that out if you hit one of these desktop applications.

"sudo kodi" isn't showing any log in / ?
It's still showing as a quarter of my screen, though. if I try and run "sudo kodi" it's full screen but in settings it says it's windowed and 720p.
I installed:
kodi-fbdev mali-fbdev xorg lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter aml-libs linux-headers-c2
How do I install fbturbo video driver?

Kodi.log from opening kodi from terminal (non root):

your log shows that kodi detected your screen to be 720p:
13:10:30.966 T:548335308800 NOTICE: CEGLNativeTypeAmlogic::SetNativeResolution to 1280x720@60.000000
13:10:30.966 T:548335308800 NOTICE: CEGLNativeTypeAmlogic::SetDisplayResolution to 720p60hz

are you sure you have hardkernel version of kodi, or you start hardkernel version of kodi? because this was a problem of vanilla kodi...
what's your "apt show kodi-fbdev", "dpkg -L kodi-fbdev"? Can you try starting it with absolute path, like "/usr/lib/kodi/kodi.bin -fs --standalone"?
btw it always says "windowed", this is ok. I think this is some internal ambiguity of kodi itself.

Description: Open Source Home Theatre (executable binaries)
Kodi, formerly known as XBMC is an award winning free and
open source software media-player and entertainment hub for all your digital
media. Kodi is available for Linux, Mac OS X (Leopard, Tiger and Apple TV)
and Microsoft Windows, as well as the original Xbox game console. Created in
2003 by a group of like minded programmers, Kodi is a non-profit project run
and developed by volunteers located around the world. More than 50 software
developers have contributed to Kodi, and 100-plus translators have worked to
expand its reach, making it available in more than 30 languages.
 .
While Kodi functions very well as a standard media player application for
your computer, it has been designed to be the perfect companion for your
HTPC. Supporting an almost endless range of remote controls, and combined
with its beautiful interface and powerful skinning engine, Kodi feels very
natural to use from the couch and is the ideal solution for your home
theater. Once installed, your computer will become a fully functional
 multimedia jukebox.
 .
This package contains the kodi binaries.

There are two more packages kodi-fbdev depends on, kodi-fbdev-bin and kodi-fbdev-data, can you show for them also "apt show ..." and "dpkg -L ..."?

/usr/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu/kodi/kodi.bin -fs --standalone
this is the right command that starts it. I doubt it will change stuff, because same thing happens when you just type "kodi", but through scripts.
ok, can you now paste here "cat /proc/cmdline"?

hm, I think you have a custom modeline set in boot.ini. that modifies your resolution. this part "modeline=1920,1080,148500,67500,60,1920,2008,2052,2200,1080,1084,1089,1125,1,1,1" doesn't look standard.
can you find your boot.ini (most probably in /media/boot) and commend out there
# setenv m "custombuilt"
# setenv modeline "1920,1200,154000,74040,60,1920,1968,2000,2080,1200,1202,1208,1235,1,0,1"
and uncomment one of the resolutions below, like
setenv m "1080p60hz" # Progressive 60Hz
and reboot after

Could it be because I'm using HDMI to DVI-D?
