Sound disappears after update

I am running Ubuntu Mate off an eMMC on my C2. Recently I noticed that my sound had disappeared similar to a recent post http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=20634

I reflashed my eMMC with the official C2 Ubuntu Mate 16.04 OS and sound was working again. I edited the boot.ini file to fit my screen and reboot. I ran update/upgrade/dist-upgrade to get the latest version. Sound was still working. I rebooted and sound was gone. Any ideas?

The current answer is do not update :) A few other Linux users are reporting the same problem as you. Check out the other threads about it. Odroid has been looking into the sound issue, but he wasn't able to reproduce it. Some of the Linux Ninjas aboard the C2 boat will probably find this annoying bug and squash it!

Perhaps if someone uploads a disk image of the OS using Win32DiskImager when it is affected by the bug right after they reproduce it... but with no other software installed, just updates. Although I would have thought it would be easy to reproduce if indeed only updates are installed and small boot.ini modifications have been made.

This morning I tried to reproduce the issue.

I clearly installed "ubuntu64-16.04lts-mate-odroid-c2-20160226.img".
Ran sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and it took a couple of hours due to tons of updates.
There was a dialog box to update the boot.ini file and I granted the update too.
I did reboot and I can hear the sound from my HDMI monitor with Youtube on the Firefox(armhf version).
My kernel version is 3.14.29-56 and I didn't touch anything.
Try "speaker-test" on the command line.

Once Canonical releases the final version of Ubuntu 16.04, we will start to make a new image.
We have a plan to release a new image in early May with some other new features.

I have managed to narrow the problem down to the boot.ini file.

I did exactly this and got the same result as odroid: sound was OK. The problem came when I edited my boot.ini file to fit my monitor. I #-mark the default "1080p60hz" and unmark "1680x1050p60hz" and vout "dvi", reboot, and the sound is gone.

I've tried it, but it didn't help. It seems turning on DVI mode in boot.ini causes the problem, whereas a couple of updates ago there was no issue with turning on DVI mode. I'm hoping the new HDMI Hotplug option in boot.ini means that I no longer need to enable DVI mode.

Edit: Nope, my screen still periodically gains a magenta tint, so I need DVI mode.

As far as I know the DVI TMDS can't transfer the audio stream.
So your issue seems to be very normal.

I think the tint is cyan because of a HDMI handshake failure that removes the red component. The screen flashes green before this happens, and then green again before it goes away.

The "dvi" mode is a flag to the Amlogic video display driver. It should control whether audio frames are sent as part of the signal to the monitor. If the monitor is not expecting sound (DVI), and sounds frames are sent by the C2 (HDMI), then you will get display anomalies like the screen tint.

My theory is that the sound and/or picture issues are due to a combination of the display driver and the monitor EDID table. Unless the display is 4K, there are no HDMI modes for video resolutions above 1080p, only DVI modes. This means correct parsing of the EDID extended modes would be needed to correctly frame the HDMI signal if the monitor supports it, or to disable audio (DVI) if it doesn't. Higher resolutions than 1080p with audio (HDMI) require higher frequencies on the cables and may not be supported by the monitor. The EDID will indicate exactly what is supported.

If I boot LibreELEC-Odroid_C2.aarch64-6.95.6-devel-20160415140342-r1-gb6583b9.img then enable DVI mode in boot.ini, the cyan tint is NOT fixed but I still get sound in DVI mode. Also, I had sound in DVI mode in Ubuntu MATE a couple of weeks ago before some recent patches, but DVI mode also fixed the cyan tint, which I was happy with.
In regards to the video, the behavior can be explained by the improper operation of the board when throttling before the PWM fix was released.
I know the temp issue has been fixed, and I am on the latest kernel which has fixed it, but it hasn't fixed the cyan tint that occurs randomly.

The likely explanation is the openelec build is not including the patches and may not have the PWM bootloader fix since they build from source. Sound in DVI mode is likely a bug that was corrected since DVI does not include sound, only HDMI does.

The monitor EDID will include the timing information required for a HDMI signal at the higher resolution with sound. This is the information that will need to be added to the display driver for proper support if the C2 hardware is capable meeting the timings. The "generic" timing information for the display resolution is either incorrect or not supported by your monitor.

Again, this is all theory. Examining an EDID dump from the monitor should answer definitively (by someone familiar with the display driver, timings, and EDID spec).

Would what you're theorising allow the blue tint to occur randomly even if there is no sound playing and it's just sitting on the desktop, and then return to normal after a certain period of time? (damn, I've accidentally hijacked another thread)

If the cable can not reliably deliver the "faster-than-1080p-HDMI mode", then yes, its possible. If the "generic" timing frequencies are incorrect, its also possible. Testing at 1080p/HDMI would provide additional evidence to evalute.

Yes, your boot.ini is correct.
Try other HDMI cables as crashoverride recommended.

Also try to bridge the HDMI connector frame and USB host connector frame with a conductive wire.

The older kernel has wrong DVI driver implementation and we fixed it.
There should be no sound once the DVI mode is enabled.

If ...
1) You are using the official Ubuntu image with all updates applied
2) You are using 1080p HDMI without any converters or adapters
3) You have tried different and/or shorter HDMI cables
4) The screen changes colors while simply sitting at the desktop doing nothing.
5) The "grounding trick" does not affect it.
6) The monitor works correctly with other 1080p HDMI devices

Then ...
I would suspect you have a defective C2 unit.

At least now we know the answer to the OP's question: there's no sound in DVI mode because there wasn't meant to be in the first place.

I assume that is what solved my problem in this post http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=141&t=20392 and that is probably when the sound fell off as well, except that I did not notice it immediately.

I tried this, but it didn't help (by the way, is that a permanent change to my system or does it go away when i reboot, I'm no Linux guru as you might guess ;) )

Right, Koxx's workaround didn't work for me either.
I have no idea how to enable the sound with the DVI mode.
When I connected an old DVI screen to C2 with HDMI mode, the screen shows garbage noise.

if you are connecting a hdmi==>dvi cable input there is no audio passed through this type of connection.....if you want audio i suggest you get either the usb audio adapters ..or simply for best sound get a dac hi-fi board

the problem with the cyan is more likely to be faulty or broken pins on the cable or the input socket it`s self having enlarged receptors..causing only certain connection`s try with different cable and screen..
as for your sound issue ..i have been updating my c-2 board every day...have never had an issue ..i suggest you check your sound preferences in you gui to see if you have it properly configured..

Speaking for myself, I'm using plain HDMI all the way from the TV to C2, yet I enabled DVI mode in boot.ini because it fixed my cyan tint problem. I had sound in DVI mode up until about 2 weeks ago when I installed patches and something about the sound setup had changed.

The strange thing about the cyan tint is it comes and goes seemingly at random. If there were something definitively wrong with the cable or connector, surely it would remain cyan at all times? Although I take on board what you're saying, and I have a new HDMI cable on the way to test, and will also test other things crashoverride suggested. Another odd thing is, as previously mentioned, the cyan tint appears to go away when I enable DVI mode, although in LibreELEC, DVI mode does not completely fix it.

Again, speaking for myself (and I have the same issue with audio as the OP) you can see in my other thread about the same problem that there is nothing mis-configured in any of the more obvious available GUI settings, and even when delving a bit further with console commands or viewing logs nothing appears out of the ordinary, except sound is no longer audible in DVI mode, even without conversion adapters. In fact, if I comment out DVI mode in boot.ini (without doing anything else) and reboot, audio instantly returns. Upon re-enabling DVI mode in boot.ini (without doing anything else) and rebooting, sound is gone again. According to odroid, this is because audio was incorrectly implemented before a recent patch.

I respect and accept the fact that DVI does not carry audio.

Now I'm just wondering why do I need to select DVI when my C2 and monitor are conected with an HDMI cable, and my monitor has HDMI capability?

Considering that sound has worked previously (before the mentioned kernel update), it is definitely a software issue and not a hardware limitation? Unfortunately my knowledge of these things is minimal, so all I can do is ask questions.

Can you post the dmesg output? We will review your boot log.
I think there should be a problem of EDID or HPD detecting with your monitor.

According to your dmesg, your vout sink is the DVI and it couldn't make any sound.

will disable the audio over HDMI for compatibility with DVI.

When I add 'vout=hdmi' in the boot.ini (I hope this is what you meant?):

I tried this with disablehpd both 'true' and 'false'. I get a black screen.

I have also tried my normal settings with both true/false for disablehpd, and my normal settings without vout=dvi and true/false for disablehpd, without success.

If I use '1080p60' mode (which is default setting in the boot.ini): sound works perfectly :!: (but the outside edges of my screen are not visible, so if that somehow could be adjusted everyhting would be good).

Try to find 'full' or 'disable-overscan' or 'justscan' or 'aspect-ratio' in your display settings menu.

My display settings menu has 'Fill to screen' and 'Fill to Aspect Ratio', but strangely there is no difference between the two settings. Also the font is a little fuzzy/distorted in '1080p' mode and I am not sure this would go away even if 'Fill to screen' would work?

Is it the fact that '1680x1050p60hz' is under VESA modes which is causing the problem? You mentioned in a previous post http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f ... 75#p130315 that 2560x1600 resolution will be supported by end of April. It is a multiple of 1680x1050, could this potentially scale itself automaticaly to my screen size?

Considering that sound does work with the '1080p' setting, I guess it would have to have HDMI support, since DVI-d doesn't carry audio.

Seems to be an odd monitor?!

Okay,that explains it. At least for the present situation.

What puzzles me is how it could work before the mentioned kernel update (admittedly only booting from an uSD card, and not from the eMMC(which turned the screen green)). Audio was maintained even though 1680x1050 and dvi mode were selected. Something to think about...

The EDID does not specify it as a HDMI mode which means its "not supported". It may work, or it may not. It may sometimes work, or it may require special "hacks" to work. The latter appears to be the case in this instance. It worked "accidentally" due to a software bug in the C2 display driver. Now that the bug has been corrected, it no longer works. If the "accidental" settings could be re-created, it would likely work again. However, since its 'invalid' for everyone else to send audio frames in a DVI mode, its doubtful anyone will purposely add the mode back. In other words, the monitor accepted and used an invalid mode (DVI+Audio) but this does not mean that other monitors will accept the invalid mode. If you 'hack' the EDID to report it as a HDMI mode or re-introduce the display driver bug, it may work again.

I have exactly the same problem as Undesirable and onestone, is there any workarround yet? With previously kernel and dvi mode everything worked fine but now its either i have sound or that annoying purple tint. Can anybody help?

There's no workaround because not many people have the problem and it only happens with certain (old?) displays. Perhaps if you supply your demesg log then they can narrow it down, but I'm guessing they need more than that, i.e. a physical screen that they can reproduce the issue on, because 2 people have already posted their dmesg logs and no progress has been made.

Yes, again it's the same age as mine (2010). My TV's a Philips too (32PFL5604H-12) with HDMI v1.3 ports. Yours is a 9000 series released in the same timeframe as my lower-spec 5000 series and so it also has HDMI v1.3 ports. The only other guy with the same problem that has posted here is using a SONY BRAVIA KDL-32EX600 released in 2010 too and it was also still using the HDMI version most common at the time, which was v1.3. I wonder if HardKernel can look into a possible HDMI v1.3 incompatibility that causes artifacts?

Buying a Hi-fi shield seems a bit of an expensive workaround for me, and I heard it doesn't even work with Kodi which is primarily what I use my C2 for.

It is really hard to buy an old TVs in Korea.
We can go to local flea market to find one. But it is not easy to test and confirm whether it has the sound faulty HDMI V1.3 issue or not.
Believe or not, we've shipped several thousands of ODROID boards every month. But there are very few people have this strange issue.

No problem, I'll just have to live with it until I get a new TV.

BTW, there's nothing wrong with the sound in HDMI mode, we just get the blue-screen problem and to fix it we have to enable DVI mode which has no sound.

@undesirable yes that sounds like that could be the problem. I´m using the current ubunutu version with kodi and it works. I also dont use the hifi shield i bought form ebay a es9023. It´s quit easy to install and also cheap. I used this tutorial for installing: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=118&t=15741 . After assembling the hardware you install it just like the normal hifi shield http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id= ... ifi_shield .
