Is it possible to connect RPi/Odroid to the Internet via a usb WiFi antenna at a distance and connect to the RPi/Odroid via Ethernet cable from my laptop and put laptop into Airplane mode? So, I was thinking of putting my laptop to the Airplane mode and use RPi/Odroid as my “guinea pig” that will connect to WIFI and my laptop will connect to it via Ethernet (wired).
the plan is to use RPi/Odroid as a router (maybe even with a firewall) and use my laptop to connect though it (with wired Ethernet) to the Internet. I have Alfa AWUS036NH, a WiFi usb card. I found a thread on Open WRT, but don’t know if it helps. Would RPi/Odroid do a better job at this? What parts do I need and how will I do this project? Thank you
I don't know if it's possible with the Alfa you have, linux driver support for that chipset is buggy.
I have my XU4 setup exactly as you describe in reverse using the Odroid WiFi Module 5. It's connected to my gigabit with LAN and the wifi is setup as a 5ghz access point, with Module 5 you could also have a 2.4ghz SSID simultaneously but I don't need it.
I can max out my 150 megabit Internet connection and the XU4 doesn't register any noticeable load.
But Module 5 can also be a client which is what you want.
I'm new to the whole robotics/programming area, I did play with DOS back in the days. How would I do it/equipment, do you have a walk-through ? How long it usually takes? I see ODROID is better suited then RPi for this?
Any guide for wireless client + bridged LAN should work.
Basically connect to any WiFi then bridge the LAN, the odroid is suited for this. Personally I would go with an XU4 since it will have a more wireless hardware compatible kernel, plus it is powerful and well suited to do lots of other things at the same time.
