KitKat 4.4.4 Pocket Rocket for ODROID-X2 (20150206)

Unread post by robroy » Sun May 12, 2013 2:19 am

I created an Android Kit Kat 4.4.4 image with a core suite of applications for a set-top box.

Download the image here (eMMC only):
KitKat 4.4.4 (Beta): http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/ ... 206.img.xz
JellyBean 4.1.2 (Stable): http://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images/ ... 714.img.xz

Pocket Rocket for ODROID-X2 is only available for eMMC module. Use Couch Potato instead if you do not have an eMMC module available. When writing to eMMC, use the eMMC->SD card adapter that came with your module and copy the image directly. It may be necessary to use the eMMC recovery tool before writing this image: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=969.

Already have an Android image?
Upgrade your existing image to Pocket Rocket with the Epic Loot Software Collection, which includes Kodi 14 and more: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=113&t=8787

Applications:
  • Chrome
    Firefox
Kodi 14 Helix with hardware acceleration
    Gmail
    Google Drive
    ES File Explorer
    Ultra Explorer
    Terminal Emulator
    MX Player
    tTorrent
BluezIME Controller with HID pack for use with Wiimote
Angry Birds Star Wars I and II
    Angry Birds Space
    RetroArch
    Ad Away
    Jota+ Text Editor
    Juice SSH
    bVNC
    Screen Orientation Control
    Stickmount
    full!screen
    Youtube
    Netflix
    TED Talks
    Pandora
    PC Radio
    BusyBox
    ZArchiver
Customizations left for you upon burning the image to your card:
  • 1. Configure the following apps and enable them with SuperUser permissions: AdAway, full!screen, and Screen Orientation Control.
    2. Start MXPlayer, select "Settings", choose "Decoder", and click all of the "H/W+ decoder" checkboxes.
Optional steps: Features in this release:
  • Kodi 14 Helix with hardware acceleration
    Installable on 8GB eMMC
Notes:
  • KitKat 4.4.4 is still in Beta, and some features may not yet be working properly. Please provide feedback and bug reports directly to the Hardkernel developers on the main KitKat thread if you encounter any issues.

When resizing the partitions using Gparted on a 64GB eMMC module, the FAT32 partition has a limit of 32GB in order to be recognized by the bootloader. It's recommended to backup, delete, recreate and restore the files to the FAT32 partition instead of resizing it.

The folder "/sdcard/Bootstrap" contains the installation files for apps that were downloaded from the developers' websites. Please copy the Bootstrap directory to an external USB drive for system restore purposes as it contains everything you need to rebuild Pocket Rocket from the official HardKernel release.

If you experience poor playback in Kodi, use MX Player instead, which also has hardware acceleration.

You can provide feedback directly to the Kodi developers here: http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=164.

Kodi nightly updates are available here: http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/android/arm/.

In Basic, it's an image with pre-installed Google Apps and stuff to enjoy your Odroid? Very cool!

Thank you! I am releasing a new version of Pocket Rocket which includes the U2 build in the next few days.

Couch Potato is up next, if the Pocket Rocket stress testing goes well :)

New features: The nightly unstable build of XBMC Gotham Alpha is pre-installed for testing purposes.

If you experience poor playback in XBMC, install the monthly version located in "/mnt/sdcard/Bootstrap/xbmc/monthly/" instead.

You can provide feedback directly to the XBMC developers here: http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=164

Enjoy!

Does Plex work on this version? I see you were able to get Netflix working but I don't think Plex will be that easy. If it doesn't work in this version does it work in couch potato?

Thanks for the awesome work! Keep it up.

I haven't used Plex. Between Netflix, XBMC and MXPlayer, all my needs for streaming, video playback and network media sharing are satisfied :)

What are your experiences with Plex?
Thanks for the awesome work! Keep it up.

To robroyhall.
I need use HDMI resolution 1280x720. Can I change the resolution of this release?
Should I use the files boot.scr with resolution 1280x720 ? Should I insert the file boot.scr in /mnt/sdcard ?

Just remove boot.scr, reboot and it will be 720p.

Hello,

I just received my X2 and I installed your build found in this thread and it rocks. So far so good!

My only question would be to know if there is the ability to add/enable USB sound card drivers?

For example to be able to use a Asus Xonar Essense One. It works fine out of the box with Linux on the odroid-x2 but not with Android. Any ideas?

Thank you.

Android sound platform is different from Linux.
Even Android uses the ALSA, there are many customized hard-coded layers (HAL).

But the latest Android 4.2.x, Google starts to support a few USB sound cards.
We are also working on Android 4.2.2 for ODROID-X/X2/U2, but it may take 2~3 months for porting.

Hi, Having some issues with the Pocket Rocket edition. I can get it installed fine on both the SD card and the eMMC module but the the resolution is large, so I can't see the whole screen and the color seems to be 8 or 16 bit. I'm currently using the LCD module with the X2. Have tried multiply reinstalls as well as both the 720p and 1080p jumper and got the same result. I have updated to the newest HardKernel version of Android 4.1.2 (1.7.1) and it's does fine even the original version that came on the eMMC worked fine. Any suggestions as to what might be causing the resolution issue with the Pocket Rocket version would be greatly appreciated.

Remove the "boot.scr" file in /mnt/sdcard and reboot for 720p.

There is a trick involved in resizing the partitions. Please review the original post for a link to my How-To on how to properly adjust the Android partitions.

Also, you'll need to be more specific than "it stop working" ;)

hi people,

I have tried resizing from robroyhall and it workt. I didn't back up the files and because of that my files get corrupted. The only thing i did different is that i resized all the partitions so i had made back ups of all the partitions. Thanks for the info.

Regards,
Christian

New features in this release: Please note that I have discontinued the SD card version of Pocket Rocket because of performance and stability issues.

If you want to run Android from an SD card, use the Couch Potato image instead, which has the same functionality as Pocket Rocket: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=1319.

Enjoy!

Use the adapter that came with your emmc and copy to it as you would an sd card using win32 disk imager or the dd command.

My adapter is not working - is there any other options?

You really need the adapter in order to work with the eMMC :/

I use a Transcend USB 3.0 adapter which is the only one that I've found to be reliable with the SD card adapter: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009D79VH4/

Your only other option involves having quick fingers: http://fw.hardijzer.nl/?p=200&cpage=1#comment-1005

Thanks for the replay and yes the Transcend is workong great - thanks :)
Now I have another issue...
After download the zip file - the extracted file is:
JellyBean-4.1.2-v1.8.1_PocketRocket-X2-HDMI-EMMC.20131020.img.xz
I have tried to write this image file with win32 disk imager.
The image was written succesffuly according to the win32 disk imager but i cand use the emmc - when i try to read it with the Transcend card reader - it says that the emmc need to format before using...
What m I doing wrong?

Unzip the .xz file using 7Zip before writing the .img to disk.

I know that this problem has been solved, but actually there is another way, without adapter. Just have a decent size normal sd card (I have 16GB), install any linux distro avaulable for X2 on it, and then mount it and copy Pocket Rocket image on it, you may unpack it first, it takes some time to do it, and it is faster on PC. Boot in and then run dd comand from SD-installed linux. Just make sure to point to right device, and unmount all partitions on emmc first.

Nice image. if i'm not mistaken this image got better performance than the ubuntu images you posted?

I find the bluethooth a little unstable. using the hardkernel bluetooth adapter, it often freezes up.
And it's pre populated with paired Bluetooth devices. Yes that's right, when I havent even paired any devices, there is about 10 devices paired that I can't remove.

any chance you will be releasing a newer android version for odroid-x2?
Would be nice to have tha ability to change resolution on the fly.

Xbmc performs better in Android than in Ubuntu, otherwise its hard to compare.

Long-click the device.

My releases mirror the latest from Hardkernel.

The Samsung chipset only supports two resolutions. Pleaee start a new thread if you have further resolution questions.

Keep up the good work
