[SOLVED] Do not starts

Post by Papalapa »

It seems that my ODROID-C2 stopped to work.

It was used for years with LibreELEC but now during the startup I can see the LibreELEC 9.0.2. logo as usual but later the screen becomes dark and you only see a black arrow on it. As I have a Logitech keboard connected I can move the arrow around the black screen but that's all. I reinstalled LibreELEC on the eMMC and also tried with an microSD instead with the same result. Then I tried CoreELEC instead of LibreELEC and the behaviour is the same. Same with Ubuntu version "ubuntu64-16.04.3-mate-odroid-c2-20170927", it shows the logging screen for a second and then the screen becomes black and the blue LED is turned off, only remaining the red LED.

Finally, the Ubuntu version "ubuntu-18.04.3-3.16-mate-odroid-c2-20190820" worked fine. Now I'm trying to reinstall LibreELEC but I get the same black screen although the red LED is on and blue LED is flashing all the time.

I flashed the images using Rufus and Etcher but the problem remains

Could be a hardware problem?

Is it possible to reinstall the firm on the ODROID-C2? Can I do any additional test?

This is the image on the screen after booting and showing LIbreELEC or CoreELECT logo.

Thank you!

Did you flash CoreELEC-Amlogic.arm-9.2.3-Odroid_C2.img.gz image with Etcher?
Don't extract the file if you use Etcher.

Taking your advise I started from 0 and downloaded "CoreELEC-Amlogic.arm-9.2.3-Odroid_C2.img.gz". I installed the file on the microSD with Etcher (without decompressing the file before, Etcher has done this job by itself) and the microSD was succesfully created and validated by Etcher.

Then I inserted the microSD into the ODROID-C2 socket and at the first start CoreELEC resized the microSD partition and rebooted after a few seconds. Once reboot the CoreELEC logo is shown and also the version on the top left corner but after 3 seconds the screen becomes black. RED LED is turned on and BLUE LED is flashing. I waited for 30 minutes in this state but nothing new happened: black screen and black arrow when I touch the pad of the Logitech keyboard connected to the C2.

This C2 was working during 3 years and no upgrade nor re-installation software was made, that's why I suspect of the hardware.

There's something else that can I do?

Thank you!

My experience with Linux suggests arrow means X server started but not desktop.
I would try CTL ALT F1 to get terminal and login as command line.
Then check status of many services with systemctl.
If graphics hardware failed to be recognized then arrow without desktop might be suspected.
The command line login would confirm underlying CPU server hardware without display server hardware working.
Blue LED flashing should mean computer CPU is running as expected but display arrow means display circuits on C2 not active or broken.

I can get this same (although corrupted) display greeting as if I used (CTL ALT F1) using ssh localhost on Ubuntu on N2

Unfortunatelly nothing happens when I press CTRL+ALT+F1 on the keyboard, the black arrow continues on the screen and I can move it but that's all.

What I don't understand is why Ubunto 20 and Ubuntu 18 images work and Ubuntu 16, CoreELEC and LibreELEC not. I used exactly the same method to record the cards. It's crazy!!

Indeed, the phenomenon is really weird. .?.

Can you access the CoreELEC OS via Ethernet SSH to see booting logs?

I'm sorry but I have no idea about how to do this. Is not possible to read the logs connecting the microSD/eMMC to a PC computer?

Anyway, today I ordered a new C2 to the Spanish Dealer (Raspipc), we will see when it arrives...

I'm still trying different OS images with these results:

Android 6.0.1 OK, it works
Android 5.1.1 OK, it works
Ubuntu 16.04 KO, not works
Ubuntu 18.04.3 OK, it works
Ubuntu 20.04 OK, it works
LibreELEC 9.0.2 KO, not works
LibreELEC 8.2.5 OK, it works
LibreELEC 9.0.0 KO, not works
CoreELEC 9.2.3 KO, not works

Once LibreELEC 8.2.5 was installed and working I tried to restore my backup (9.0.2) but after the restoring process the version has not been upgarded and stills on 8.2.5.

Do you have any logical explanation for this? ¿?

It is not really understandable.
Does all the "KO, not works" mean the display shows a mouse cursor and the blue LED flashes like a heartbeat?
Did you have a chance to learn accessing SSH with putty on your host PC?
Without system booting log, it is very hard to narrow down the root causes.

Yes, I agree with you, it makes no sense for me...
Right, KO means that the display shows a mouse cursor and the blue LED flashes like a heartbeat.
I'll try to access through SSH from the PC but first I have to learn how to do this (I'm a simple computer user, not advanced one, sorry). Hope that in this way the log helps to understand what's happening.

On the other hand today/tomorrow I will receive a new ODROID-C2 and I'll follow the same way to install LibreELEC. Let's see what will happen..

Try finding an IP address of the C2 board first if your host PC and the C2 are in the same network.

I got it, I can access and it seems that CoreELEC is running. How can I access to the LOG files? I tried with the CoreELEC browser but is not possible to see the microSD card.

P.D. I received the new ODROID-C2 board right now and after installing LibreELEC 9.0.2 it has the same "problem". I do not know what's happening, I'm really lost, but it seems that the problem is not the ODROID board :o

Is CoreELEC 9.2.3 also showing the same problem?
I will try to find a time slot to test it tomorrow.

I'm sorry, don't waste your time, I finally have found the problem: Two defective HDMI cables. It's incredible because both cables (the one connected to the TV in the living room and the other connected to the PC monitor in the workshop) failed.

Having a second ODROID C2 has helped me a lot because I discarded the ODROID board as the problem. As I also used several microSD and eMMC cards, as well as Rufus and Etcher softwares, I started to think in the power supply or the connection cables. What I do not understand is why depending of the CoreELEC/LibreELEC/Ubuntu version sometimes works and sometimes not. I repeated the procedure several times and I always get the same results so, it's true. Maybe as the HDMI cable carries out other signals than only video, this can affect the communication between the ODROID and the TV/Monitor? Also, why I can see a black arrow on the display? This means that the video signal is correctly reaching the TV/Monitor it isn't?

Anyway, as both cables were HDMI 1.4 I will replace it by HDMI 2.0 and in this way the problem will be totally solved.

Thank you for your support ;)

Glad to hear that. :D

I think the broken cable might lower the HDMI display resolution which can't show the *ELEC OSes GUI layer properly.
