Throughput through USB Wifi dongle to USB HDD?

Unread post by outhudd9 » Tue May 14, 2019 11:48 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to decide whether I should buy a cheap 5GHz USB Wifi dongle or a more expensive Wifi Network Expander with Gigabit Ethernet.

What kind of download speed could I expect using a 5GHz USB Wifi dongle, downloading to a USB hard drive (assuming that the USB bus will be the bottleneck, and not the internet connection or the Wifi connection)? The internet router is not in the same room as the Odroid C2.

I have seen only 2.0MB/sec download speed using an older 2.4GHz USB Wifi dongle. Would using a 5GHz adapter improve this?

The alternative is to buy a more expensive Wifi repeater type device with a Gigabit Ethernet port and connect it to the C2's Ethernet port.

Look at the WiFi module 5A product page.
Peer-to-peer iperf measured transfer rate could be up to 20MB/sec at 5Ghz while we could see only 10MB/sec at 2.4Ghz.

It could be much lower if your wireless connectivity environment has much more interference and distance.
So I can't tell you how much it can improve in your working place.

Thanks. It seems there's an additional performance hit if you are downloading to a USB connected HDD instead of using iperf.

I'm seeing 30MB/sec download speed using the Ethernet. 5MB/sec using 2.4GHz Wifi (very close to router), will post back shortly with 5GHz Wifi result.

The 5GHz Wifi USB dongle was downloading at about 7-8MB/sec to USB harddrive.

I have found that the best solution was to use a Wifi extender (TP Link RE450) and connect that to the Odroid C2 ethernet. Seeing 30MB/sec downloads to USB hard drive using this.
