RTC battery C2

Unread post by KC7NOA » Wed Mar 02, 2016 2:50 am

I was just looking a bit ago at the Odroid-C2 Wiki for a connector for a RTC battery. I didn't see one. Is there an implementation of a RTC battery like one the C1 ?

Id like to use a battery that has larger capacity than a coin cell ....

As mentioned on the product page, there is no RTC or SPI on the C2 board. They were omitted by Amlogic on the main chip itself.

There was discussion about an official I2C RTC device, but I am unaware of its status. There are already many 3rd party I2C RTC devices available in the interim.

Ok ... Found hardware ...

hope odroid see this in a week or two ... must be a busy guy ....

3rd party RTC over i2c is plentiful ..... ebay 252234700828 is under 1$usd (73cents) ....

Not sure if that 252234700828 RTC needs a level converter or not (probably not, runs on 3.3V LiR2032) ....

im wondering if there is any drivers in the ubuntu image to use it (im thinking probably not - but just kills electrons to ask)

We are also developing a RTC module for C2 these days.
I think we may have some engineering samples in the middle of next week.
I heard we are trying to use a NXP RTC chipset which use the I2C interface and the board form factor is very slim which helps to fit into our official plastic cases.
We may need a couple of days to make/test the hwclock device drivers.

Once the sample is okay, we may need to wait around 4~5 weeks for the production due to the lead time of material.

We also tried to find some cheap RTC boards on ebay or aliexpress.
But most of them doesn't match to the C2 due to the the big heat sink. The battery part and heat sink are overlapped each other.

Which NXP RTC chip are you looking to use?

Do most all use the same commands?

I was not planning on using a coin but rather a 1000mAh Li-ion battery ....

PCF8563 from NXP. You need to compare the datasheets.

The coin battery could touch the heat sink obviously.
Which RTC boards you consider to try?

or is it a case of one or the other ???
KC7NOA wrote:any progress ?
you can use the ds3231 board if you bend the connectors slightly to pass over the heat sink - as an aside, its a much better RTC than the DS1307 chip.

I have a how-to on this board to setup this module using a custom kernel + device tree setup (dts file modification). This means your C2 acts like the RTC is on-board and boot level RTC is available. :D

Happy to see you doing something on rtc thing.
I'll buy Odroid's rtc even if it costs 2-3 times much, but fits on board without overlapping heathink.

We've made some samples and it works well. I think we can start to sell it 1~2 weeks later with some Linux/Android device driver updates.

There is no overlapping with the stock heat sink.
Backup battery is replaceable. (one coin-cell(CR2032) is included)
Can be installed into the official plastic case.
But it is too expensive. It is US$5. :o

I'll buy it anyway. Good connector construction, full linux support, one second installation, are matter.

I hope you'll put it on board next revision.

I dont think it will affect the overall cost. Any one who wants one of these fully functional is going to have to spend several hundred dollars on a ton of accessories any way.
Total linux newb. But I did figure out: Odroid c2 = BROKEN.

I've asked this question in private message with no answer, can you answer it publicly?

What does hk/odroid sell that works? what boards actually work? work like every other current sbc on the planet that is? are all the boards broken like c2 or do some work a little? do any fully function? is it just broken arm64 you sell or are all the arm32 broken also? Do you sell any thing besides over priced paper weights?

What about suptronic x-series (x105, x200, x205, etc..) expansion boards? they all have RTC and alot of nice options, for the Raspberry Pi..... with the boards work on c2?

if you are running the C-2 and the r.t.c battery and the dac hi-fi shield
then you need to space the hi-fi sheild on 20 mm spacers or close to that and make a loom to fit it up or get a header riser

@hardkernel
some ingenuity will be required for the r.t.c and the dac hi-fi

Hmm annoyingly the UK distributor's website allows you to order "Odroid RTC Backup Battery RTC Backup Battery" which obviously will not work nor provide any RTC backup..

The idea my C2 will be for controlling a telescope and mount with the express idea of fast setup so having to set the clock each time from remote locations will be a PITA.

it is the "battery only" it is for the earlier boards ..it is the backup power to keep the rtc in time ..it`s not the rtc module..
hopefully the module will be on sale very soon..

We need a couple of weeks to complete the some driver/configuration code development for Ubuntu and Android OSes.
Once we make it, we will start to sell the RTC module.

Can you find "aml_i2c.ko" and "rtc-pcf8563.ko" files?
If you can't find them, request it to LibreElec developers.

I have a new odroid-c2 and have the rtc shield. I am not sure how to set up using the rtc. Some details are that the rtc shield is pcf8563 by NXP and am running arch linux arm on the odroid. I have checked the modules as per:

Code: Select all

[root@odroid-c2 ~]# modinfo aml_i2c
filename: /lib/modules/3.14.65-8-ARCH/kernel/drivers/amlogic/i2c/aml_i2c.ko.gz
license: GPL
description: I2C driver for amlogic
author: AMLOGIC
depends:
intree: Y
vermagic: 3.14.65-8-ARCH SMP preempt mod_unload aarch64
[root@odroid-c2 ~]# modinfo rtc-pcf8563
filename: /lib/modules/3.14.65-8-ARCH/kernel/drivers/rtc/rtc-pcf8563.ko.gz
version: 0.4.3
license: GPL
description: Philips PCF8563/Epson RTC8564 RTC driver
author: Alessandro Zummo <a.zummo@towertech.it>
srcversion: 0F5F66E259F9C7FC908586C
alias: i2c:rtc8564
alias: i2c:pcf8563
alias: of:N*T*Cnxp,pcf8563*
depends:
intree: Y
vermagic: 3.14.65-8-ARCH SMP preempt mod_unload aarch64
and there is some data at http://www.nxp.com/documents/data_sheet/PCF8563.pdf on the device. There also seems to be some setup info at http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id= ... figuration for linux but when I run hwclock -r I get

Code: Select all

[root@odroid-c2 ~]# hwclock -r
hwclock: Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method.
hwclock: Use the --debug option to see the details of our search for an access method.
So I guess the modules aren't loaded.

I tried to insert the module using

Code: Select all

[root@odroid-c2 ~]# insmod rtc-pcf8563
insmod: ERROR: could not load module rtc-pcf8563: No such file or directory
But that didn't work. Does anyone have any hints on how to get this going?

Thanks.

You need to use Kernel 3.14.65-66 or higher as described in the WiKi.

I posted the same question on the archlinuxarm forum, and one of the arch linux arm users posted a reply there which enabled me to get the rtc working flawlessly on my odroid-c2. In case anyone else is running arch on their odroid-c2 with the rtc shield the way to get it working is detailed at:

The RTC module is useful only for some applications which need correct time/date without internet connection.
It is not related to the system timer.

Hello.

Just a small post to know if there is now a recommended way to use the Hifi Shield and the RTC shield at the same time.

Do you have any neat solution ?

Thanks

From Google, I've found many examples to use DS1307 with Raspberry Pi. I2C bus would be able to run on 3.3V GPIO as well while DS1307 requires 5V power. If you are concerning the damage on I2C bus because of 5V, you could consider putting a level shifting circuit for SDA. Other than hardware connection, everything else would be same with other RTC examples for ODROID-C2.
