Another update of kernel 5.4.y = various "multimedia fixes" and other general fixes https://docs.armbian.com/Release_Changelog/

Update: images must be version 20.02.3 or higher.

Ok... Call me slow, but how do you enable hardware acceleration? I'm running a clean install of Armbian Bionic and es2_info shows:

Code: Select all

EGL_CLIENT_APIS: OpenGL OpenGL_ES
GL_VERSION: OpenGL ES 3.0 Mesa 19.2.8
GL_RENDERER: llvmpipe (LLVM 9.0, 128 bits)
My 02-driver.conf is:

Code: Select all

# set fbdev as default driver.
Section "Device"
         Identifier "NOGPU"
         Driver "fbdev"
EndSection
Is hardware acceleration not standard on this build with the 5.4.35-meson64 kernel?

I was hoping to play around with a MythTV frontend and Kodi on this board and wanted accelerated video...

Thank you!

For multimedia features, better stick to Kernel 4.9.y. On 5.4.y things are certainly not matured and I have no idea if you can get where you want ... not my field of interest ... for other general tasks, you might be happy with 5.4.y or more recent.

You mean I can't have everything I want?!?! :D

No, I understand. I may play around with the 4.9.y just to see but having the 5.4.y is more important to me as my C2 acts as my wireguard server at home for when I travel (not that I'm doing much of that now!).

Well, I might also be wrong, multimedia is not my field ... and I anway mixed things up (C2 and N2), which is now happening me daily :)

If you are asking for C2, then MM should be almost there if not there yet, while N2 needs a bit more. For KODi I can't tell since I avoid installing it on Debian/Ubuntu. I rather use Librelec for that.

Yes, I was asking for the C2. I built the armbian Focal image for the C2 to play with (it literally just finished building). I poked around the kernal options before compiling and it appears all the Mesa / lima drivers are flagged to be built as modules. I've used linux for many years but I'm somewhat inexperienced when it comes to something like this. Good learning opportunity! I have no idea what I'm doing but I've already made an image of my stock system so I can play around all I want without worry of breaking something!

Is it possible to upgrade from Armbian Bionic to Focal?

Can I simply point the apt sources to Focal and run apt dist-upgrade?

Possible? Yes.
Verified? No.

Check Armbian forums - somebody certainly tried.

We are good in low level stuff, but as you can see - not very good in tweaking desktops ... We plan to provide all major desktops and we seek your help fixing and ajusting small problems like fixig fonts, chosing applications, change icons, put our logo instead of ubuntu, etc.

@igorpec, https://forum.armbian.com/topic/16587-e ... an-buster/
Sad that with last armbian focal image ethernet (ethernet port, wifi with a dongle works) doesn't working "from scratch" (tested with my C2 yesterday, last armbian .img installed on microSD; with NetworkManager or without with /etc/network/interfaces)
[Maybe it's "reverse" situation, to my problem with some old kernel and l2tp, - that kernel and kernel drivers is too new]

Self build image works - at least on my hardware. We are finalising new release: https://forum.armbian.com/topic/17216-a ... ent=123117 where such problems were not detected. But some Amlogic boards have again this annoying hang at boot - happening to all builds based on modern u-boot kernel combo.

Hi @igorpec
When was the last time you tested these images?
I just tested Ubuntu Focal and Debian Buster from May 2nd and one doesn't boot at all (Buster) and Focal has my screen jumping from side-to-side.

Is this a known issue?

I never tested images from automated builds, especially those made when I was out of the office ;) Our automated testing facility doesn't check display function yet (perhaps next year) and we only test one variant on C2 at once (Focal).

If you make a report right - https://www.armbian.com/bugs it might get attention. In general - tracking mainline based kernel bugs is something we can't afford to cover.

Thanks.
I tried a 4k TV and it was fine.
However, when using a 1080p PC monitor with HDMI - my screen would jump to the left about 3 inches constantly, not usable.
I tried both Focal and Buster.

I tried HK Ubuntu and it didn't happen with that. but the kernel is very old so didn't stay with it.

I can test again and see if I can record it.

Thanks for the work you do.

No need to rush - personally I can't help you and we as Armbian are already full with work that is not paid by anyone for years to come. We would need to hire a few developers to deal with more bugs but sadly project funding is not on that level.

https://www.armbian.com/bugs
https://github.com/armbian/build#support
https://forum.armbian.com/forum/38-feature-requests/

If this problem bothers you but you have no intention or ability to hire developers that will fix this for you, use Armbian with stock kernel. It is usually / in certain use cases better quality than HK "Ubuntu".
