Thank you maveric

I'm still a beginner but I'm already able to set that flag as I want and compile the kernel, what I don't know still is how to apply kernel patches...
If I'm not wrong this is the kernel source https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/tree/odroidc2-3.14.y. The thing is that from there I get the version 3.14.79 and not the 3.14.108 that we get by upgrading this image.
Can you point me in the right direction please?

Thank you

I will build a new Kernel and activate the flag.
Should be available with the next update.

Hi @meveric,

Thank you

Unfortunately, that was not enough to make the aml-grabber of Hyperion.ng work.
It cannot allocate enough memory and I believe that setting the FORCE_MAX_ZONEORDER to 12 instead of 11 like HERE and HERE will solve the issue by allowing to allocate 8Mb instead of 4Mb.

Can you please share your kernel sources? I'd like to do some testing by myself to be sure that it works before proposing a definitive solution.
Another question, does your kernel work with Harkernel’s Ubuntu image?

I'm using the sources from HardKernel, but activate some extra flags such as your CONFIG_AM_VIDEOCAPTURE
danielfmo wrote:Another question, does your kernel work with Harkernel’s Ubuntu image?

Generally it would work, but you would have to remove the Kernel from HardKernel first, so you don't create any conflicts.

That's kinda hard.. I have a script that goes through several if then cases.. I don't actually know which one of them are set and which are already in place :D
But as I said, since it's the same source as the HardKernel once you can simply take their code and test there and I just add the flags you needed to my list.
Most of the stuff is unrelated to your issue anyway (additional joysticks and soundcard drivers and such).

Thank you,

I understand, I'll be sharing my findings, so far enabling CONFIG_AM_VIDEOCAPTURE is not enough to make it to work.
And is a complete no go to ubuntu, is does not work even with Hardkernel's instructions.

Next I'll be testing in you Debian Jessie.

Just a note, at first I was surprised to find out that hyperion works out of the box in Libreelec then I've noticed that they do not use Hardkernel's Kernel source. Could we get something good from there?

Since I don't know what they use I can't say it.
If you can show me a link to their sources I can compare the .config files that are created.
But I know that LibreElec use a lot of their own patches, and as long as I don't have the patches I can't do anything.
I won't use their sources directly since they are meant for OpenElec and I think they use different GPU drivers than we do and I don't want to mess with everything.

Oh, OK ! Thank you for your speed answer ! :)

At the beginning, I follow another tutorial (because i want run kodi on debian start).

So if I add this, Kodi run correctly ? :

Code: Select all
adduser --disabled-password --disabled-login --gecos "" kodi
usermod -a -G cdrom,audio,video,plugdev,users,dialout,dip,input,netdev kodi (not sure that line is necessary ?)

Create file /etc/systemd/system/kodi.service :

Code: Select all
[Unit]
Description = Kodi Media Center

# if you don't need the MySQL DB backend, this should be sufficient
After = systemd-user-sessions.service network.target sound.target

# if you need the MySQL DB backend, use this block instead of the previous
# After = systemd-user-sessions.service network.target sound.target mysql.service
# Wants = mysql.service

[Service]
User = kodi
Group = kodi
Type = simple
#PAMName = login # you might want to try this one, did not work on all systems
ExecStart = /usr/bin/xinit /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/kodi-standalone -- :0 -nolisten tcp vt7
Restart = on-abort
RestartSec = 5

[Install]
WantedBy = multi-user.target

Add right :

Code: Select all
apt-get install policykit-1 upower acpi-support consolekit

And create file /var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/custom-actions.pkla:

Code: Select all
[Actions for kodi user]
Identity=unix-user:kodi
Action=org.freedesktop.upower.*;org.freedesktop.consolekit.system.*;org.freedesktop.udisks.*
ResultAny=yes
ResultInactive=no
ResultActive=yes

For test :
Code: Select all
systemctl start kodi

And finally for start kodi at the beginning :
Code: Select all
systemctl enable kodi

I know it's a little bit outside of your post subject but it's hard to find a clearly tutorial with these step...
I understand if you don't want to answer these questions.

Thank you in advance ;)

check the pathes... kodi is unter /usr/local not /usr on my images...
I normally just use a regular desktop installation and run Kodi from there. you can use .config/autostart to easily start a program.
You can even make Kodi it's own XSession and use that to start Kodi.

Hello,

All work fine for me, except Kodi. There is no problem to watch video in 4k, but the gui stutters and the cursor is slow. I deactivated composite and it is a little faster and usable, but still slow. My desktop displays in 4k, could it be the origin of this problem ?

Thank for your help.

Yes, the C2 has very bad scaling capabilities.
For example, install glmark2-es2 and run glmark2-es2 from the desktop.
After that try glmark2-es2 --fullscreen --annotate you will see a HUGE drop in FPS.

Are you using Mali DDX or fbturbo? you should have slightly better results with fbturbo, but still 4k will be slow on Kodi, but the videos should play fine, since they are displayed in their own layer.

Is there a chance that this problem would be solve in the futur ?

Mali DDX is known to be very slow, especially under 4k you won't have any luck.
Try switching to fbturbo (using setup-odroid), this should improve experience a lot.

The gui is still slow but it's usable. There is now flickerings when playing 1080p videos. In fact, it seems that 4k simply doesn't work on the c2.

Hi,

how could i update my openvpn server on the machine? My openvpn version is 2.3.4. I made a package list update and then just try to install openvpn again, that didn't work. The option reinstall is not known by apt-get. For some reasons i dont want to upgrade all packages. So, is there a way to just update the openvpn package?

Regards,

Debian Jessie can't fulfill the requirements for Kodi 17.
I've done it under armhf, by backporting all requirements, but it's a rather complicated process.
I've tried the same for arm64 but the resulting Kodi did not work, but seeing that I have similar issues under Debian Stretch with Kodi where the requirements can be fulfilled rather easily, it might be an issue with Kodi 17 under Debian in general.

Hi,

I was considering the C2 as an upgrade to my Rpi2 running Rasbian Lite (debian) and TvHeadend with USB tuners.

The DVB support you mentioned, does that include the dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw and dvb-demod-si2168-b40-01.fw firmwares I currently use?

Many thanks,

Although the media-tree-odroid houses the driver for si2168 it does not come with the firmware:
Code: Select all
$ find . -name "*si2168*"
./media_build/v4l/si2168_priv.h
./media_build/v4l/si2168.h
./media_build/v4l/si2168.c
./media_build/linux/drivers/media/dvb-frontends/si2168_priv.h
./media_build/linux/drivers/media/dvb-frontends/si2168.c.orig
./media_build/linux/drivers/media/dvb-frontends/si2168_priv.h.orig
./media_build/linux/drivers/media/dvb-frontends/si2168.h
./media_build/linux/drivers/media/dvb-frontends/si2168.c

Edit:
On the build process I see following output:
Code: Select all
DVB_SI2168: Requires at least kernel 4.7.0

So I think building of this module is skipped for that reason.

So until there's a leap in the kernel version this is not going to be the platform for me then.
Good to have a definite answer anyway.

I'm not sure why it's not working. Not even official packages from deb-multimedia start, even without hardware acceleration it should at least show something like the menu, but it does not.
I'll check again for Debian Jessie, but this may take a while since I will be busy the next week and go on vacation soon after.

I want to check into the issue, but I'm afraid I won't have time for it, as I'm on a two weeks vacation and will return on 23rd.

I'm seeing problems (possibly related, possibly not) when upgrading setup-odroid after installing your image. I've isolated the problem to the setup-odroid upgrade, by running only that one via apt-get install --only-upgrade setup-odroid. I'm seeing some errors that seem identical to the content above except that my console doesn't know how to display the "pretty single-quotes" that come courtesy of MS Word so I get the "unknown character ASCII box" instead. Does that indicate that you weren't able to successfully patch the problem from the above post?

The only issue above was that "[[" was not /bin/sh conform and was introduced by a patch for the c2_init.sh file from mdrjr, but this is fixed.

Yeah, I wasn't seeing the "[[" problem, only the same issues with the ln comand failing, so I wasn't sure if it was the same underlying issue. I also assumed (wrongly, it seems) that the "pretty-quote" characters couldn't possibly be the output from ln, so I thought that the script was trying to make a link to a path name containing those characters. Either way, the inability to create the hard link seems like a problem, no? (If nothing else, the perception of failure is a bad thing, especially when there's really nothing wrong, because it wastes people's time wondering if they should be concerned about the error.)

I can reproduce the failure at the command line by running ln /boot/initrd.img-3.14.29+ /boot/initrd.img-3.14.29+.dpkg-bak as root.

After having researched the "ln" issue .. in depth - due to another issue involving busybox, I can tell you the following:

It is really not an issue, because the full command looks actually something like this:
Code: Select all
ln -f $A $B || cp -a $A $B

Which means it will only try to make a hard link, and fall back on copying if that fails.
However, what we see in the apt output is just ln failing, but we don't see cp succeeding (because it... succeeds) and think it may be a problem... That script could be slightly improved in this regard, but as I see it that is a job for upstream.

unlikely that it's the same issue, but I'll check.
You should actually tell us what ODROID you actually have. Your profile says nothing and you posted on the ODROID X forum, which is a 5 years old ODROID model, so it's hard to figure out how to help you ;)

I too have encountered a persistent problem with apt-get - it is not working

Unable to update or upgrade - Fails to retrieve the files from the hosts - Just get "can't resolve host" .. oph.mdr.jr.net and ftp.debian.org

Although I have installed the OS and have a command prompt and can login, I am unable to any further with it and can't install the desktop etc.
I have connected my C2 via an ethernet cable (fully functional)

since ftp.debian.org is an official debian repo it's unlikely that it's "unavailable"
The "can't resolve host" error indicates, that your DNS server is not working, and I suspect that you don't have any Internet connection at all.
Can you check your network settings on the ODROID?
