I tried this mainline image, and it successfully boots the kernel, but then dumps me to a busybox prompt within the initramfs.

[edit] The 3.14.x based image works, when using the same microSD card on the same odroid.

Code: Select all
Gave up waiting for root device.  Common problems:
 - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
   - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
   - Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
 - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT!  UUID=84404bba-d967-4c19-b0c6-231d59c68c07 does not exist.  Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.22.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.22.0-15ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

Strange. Even this is an experimental image, it should at boot ... perhaps there was a problem with image writing? It's quite a common problem. Can you check on other SD card?

I tried it on two sd cards unfortunately. I haven't tried it on an eMMC though (I don't have one to spare). Is there any reason to expect it would work on an eMMC but NOT a uSD?

I've just flashed the latest "Armbian_5.32.170701_Odroidc2_Ubuntu_xenial_dev_4.12.0" image and my C2 booted well.
Serial console and SSH were tested at least.
I used an old Class-6 8GB micro-SD card for the test.

Consider using the Etcher to flash the OS image. It has a nice Validated flashing feature by read-back-verify.

It works when I use Etcher, but not dd. That's very frustrating. Any idea why this would be?

Also it looks like cpufreq is missing. Does this mean the cores are always at the max freq?

Some portion of the transferring data could be corrupted while you ran the dd command.
"dd" read back will give you some hints.

I have no idea about the CPU clock node in Kernel 4.12 either. :(

If I edit the device tree to change scpi clocks from "disabled" to "okay" then I see the cpufreq folder available under /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq. However the only scaling governor available is "performance". I can force the maximum frequency to 100 MHz to simulate the idle power draw in "powersave", "ondemand", or "conservative". How do we enable the additional governors in this image? Does it require them to be enabled when the kernel is compiled?

Also: /sys/class/gpio does not exist. I can't tell if the USB bus is on or off. I assume it's off.

The good news is, with "nographics 1" when running at 100 MHz, and the USB bus in this unknown state, the board draws significantly less power than it did under the 3.14.x kernel. Even with Ethernet enabled it's idling at about 1.18 W, where as it idled around 200 mW higher before. With ethernet disabled it idles at a very low 0.88 W.

[edit] I'm getting the same 1.18 and 0.88 W with/without ethernet using the unmodified image, before enabling cpufreq, and before setting nographics 1. This implies the CPUs are (correctly) idling at 100 MHz, even though /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq does not exist.

Some numbers:
base power draw: 1.183 W
base power draw with eth0 down: 0.881 W
with cpus 1-3 shut down: 0.832 W
at init=/bin/bash with eth0 down: 0.851 W
at init=/bin/bash with eth0 and cpus 1-3 down: 0.793 W

All governors are enabled but don't know if this help. I could check for building and in about 6 hours from now, beta repository will be populated with those changes. Check if your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/armbian.list is having beta.armbian.com if not, change to and conduct apt update and upgrade.

I am happy that we are moving ... check here if a feature is done http://linux-meson.com

Another thing: from my reading of boot.ini on this image, it looks like the "mesontimer" and "nographics" settings are ignored, because the dtb is reloaded AFTER the fdt commands associated with those options. I noticed this when I realized that "fdt set /scpi/clocks status okay" was having no effect when inserted after the first dtb load.

Yes, if using stock kernel, while on 4.12 it probably does not have any effect at all. I'll fix asap. tnx

I missed that one, but it will be in tomorrows nightly update. Just apt-get update / upgrade on latest nightly image. If you need anything extra, here is the file you edit:

Thanks for doing that. Unfortunately it appears that just toggling that pin from userspace no long works for enabling/disabling USB without a reboot. Would you consider making the USB drivers into modules according to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=135&t=22717&start=500#p198252 so that they can be loaded/unloaded at will?

I haven't successfully built my own kernel for the C2, due mainly to lack of required storage space at build time...

That would break booting from USB drive which has higher general purpose priority. In case you need this kind of specialties, you will need to go with your own kernel. Perhaps there is another way?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you can still boot from USB as long as the module is in the initramfs and not just on the main filesystem.

Working here without a problem. One of them is acting as 5Ghz access point while others are connected to the router. One of the is: 148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter

http://sprunge.us/PWVQ

I did not change anything, only used the self-build image or latest nightly from download - or just update and you should have the same image. In about 12hours from now.

BTW. I use quality USB3.0 powered hub.

Thanks for response! I downloaded latest image and made my RT5370 working using nmtui.

Is USB audio driver included to the build? It seems USB sound card is not detected:

Also I can't find snd_usb_audio module in the file system.

I built custom kernel and included the snd_usb_audio driver, now it's ok.
@igorpec, will you include the driver to builds?

I added this driver but I could forget something - it will show up in a repository from tomorrow. Next time better send a pull request to the main build script. The config file should be easy to find: https://github.com/armbian/build/blob/m ... ext.config

I just added Debian Stretch with 4.13.1 but need to be tested.
