Lollipop 5.1.1 Pocket Rocket for ODROID-C2 (20160520)

Unread post by robroy » Sat Apr 16, 2016 2:37 am

I created an Android Lollipop 5.1.1 image with a core suite of applications for a set-top box.

Download the image here:
https://oph.mdrjr.net/robroyhall/images ... 331.img.xz

Pocket Rocket works with both UHS/Class 10+ micro SD card and eMMC. However, an eMMC module is highly recommended for best performance because of Android's heavy disk I/O. When writing to eMMC, use the eMMC->SD card adapter that came with your module and copy the image directly.

Applications:
  • Chrome
    Firefox
Kodi 17 Krypton with hardware acceleration and 4K video
    Gmail
    Google Drive
    ES File Explorer
    Ultra Explorer
    Terminal Emulator
    MX Player
    tTorrent
BluezIME Controller with HID pack for use with Wiimote
    Angry Birds Star Wars
    Angry Birds Star Wars II
    Angry Birds Space
    Mupen64+
    RetroArch
    Ad Away
    Jota+ Text Editor
    Juice SSH
    bVNC
    Screen Orientation Control
    full!screen
    Youtube
    Netflix
    TED Talks
    Pandora
    PC Radio
    BusyBox
    ZArchiver
Customizations left for you upon burning the image to your card:
  • 1. Configure the following apps and enable them with SuperUser permissions: AdAway, full!screen, and Screen Orientation Control.
    2. Start MXPlayer, select "Settings", choose "Decoder", and click all of the "H/W+ decoder" checkboxes.
Features in this release:
  • Kodi 17 Krypton with hardware acceleration
    Installable on 8GB eMMC
Notes:
  • Lollipop 5.1.1 is still in Beta, and some features may not yet be working properly. Please provide feedback and bug reports directly to the Hardkernel developers on the main Lollipop thread if you encounter any issues. Updates and changelogs are available here: http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id= ... se_android

The folder "Bootstrap" contains the installation files for apps that were downloaded from the developers' websites. Please copy the Bootstrap directory to an external USB drive for system restore purposes as it contains everything you need to rebuild Pocket Rocket from the official HardKernel release.

If you experience poor playback in Kodi, use MX Player instead, which also has hardware acceleration.

You can provide feedback directly to the Kodi developers here: http://forum.xbmc.org/forumdisplay.php?fid=164.

Kodi nightly updates are available here: http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/android/arm/.

Is this the standard version of Netflix for phones, or the Android TV version? I am trying to build a very TV friendly C2, mainly for Kodi, but then still be able to easily launch Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, and other video streaming Apps that dont have a Kodi plugin.

I have been trying to install Android TV, and FireTV versions of these on the C2 with mixed results.

It is the Netlix app that is available on the Google Play Store.

This image should fit your needs perfectly. You can even configure ODROID Utility to run Kodi on startup.

Great image.
Only one problem with Kodi passthrough. AC3 passthrough doesn't work, there is no sound when AC3 is activate.
Any ideia why?

I believe there is a simple one line fix posted in the Android v1.3 release notes on the C2 wiki at http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id= ... _note_v1.3

Just use the Terminal Emulator app. You may need to establish root privileges using the "su" command first. I believe that vi is available as part of the preinstalled BusyBox app.

Tried it out, but I keep getting Google play service errors. And for a while Bluetooth share service errors. Both in regards to the services stopping.

Also the only problem with the phone version of Netflix us you don't get hd and it isn't remote friendly.

I tried installing an Android tv Netflix apk and the apk pulled from my fire tv, both crash with errors on start. Though they work on my phone. I'm also getting the box mouse cursor, I'll look into that, reboot didn't help.

Thanks, I like the build, but having trouble tweaking to my needs.

I based the image on the official Hardkernel v1.3 release, which is still in Beta. I used @codewalker's Gapps One-Click Installer to install the play store. Pocket Rocket doesn't have any improvements beyond the installation of a suite of useful apps.

The box mouse cursor already has a couple threads posted about it, including a possible fix at http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f=137&t=20527.

I recommend posting the issues that you're experiencing on a separate thread so that the Hardkernel devs can respond directly :)

Yeah I saw the thread about the cursor, I'll follow that. I understand though that it's beta based on hk build. Just throwing out my experience incase anyone has suggestions. I appreciate you putting this together.

Sorry, about this, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to android. I can work with the lubuntu builds but I'm making this box for my wife and son and android is more iser friendly for them.

I really love this inage. I'm having 2 issues and I'm sure it is me not know how to set things up.

1. When i enable the fullscreen app the odroid boots.
It shows the home screen for a few seconds, but then the active wallpaper disappears and i can't get the home screen or app selection screens back. I'm using a mouse and keyboard. What do i need to set that will allow the fs app to still show the home and app selection screens?

2. When i load the preinstalled kodi the screen is completely messed up and i have to reboot to get out of it. It seems as if it is trying to output in 4k and the monitor I'm using to set up the box is 720p. It will be used on a 1080p screen eventually but I'm setting it up on a small screen first.
Is there some setting i need to change in android or kodi to make it display properly.

Sorry of the noob questions. And thanks for making this image.

Also is the odroid utility included in this build.

Thanks for any help

The ODROID Utility is installed, just look for it in the appsblist. Use it to set your resolution to 720p and see if that fixes your issues.

I installed this and I have a few questions.

Booted fine, but Kodi is way out of whack resolution wise and I am unable to adjust setting within.

Biggest issue is the language changed to Asian....have no idea how, and I am unable to find a way to change it back to English.

OK, I solved Kodi by just uninstalling and reinstalling it. And I found the language option.....plus I had to turn off language reset on reboot in the CEC settings for the C2

There isn't any more work to be done on the image, since it's very stable, and you can update the kernel and apps yourself using the ODROID Updater Utility and the Google Play Store.

AFAIK, Lollipop is the latest Hardkernel-supported version of Android for the C2, although there is a CM version of Marshmallow and Nougat available.

CM has a build for the C2? I thought all of their builds were for the XU4.

Ah, you're right. I thought @voodik had made CM6/7 versions for the C2, but as of last month he is still working on 7 in a private repository.

In any case, this image is identical to the Hardkernel release of Lollipop, with the Play Store and a suite of useful apps installed. There was no custom development done, and updates can be downloaded through the normal mechanisms as previously mentioned.

Hello, I'm new here and considering the C2 exactly for this application (tv/projector set-top box). I do have two questions... when using the 8GB eMMC, what kind of space is left on the card for other storage? When using Netflix, can the donwload feature be used for offline viewing? Thanks!

The image uses approximate half of the 8GB eMMC module, with the rest available for user storage. If the partition doesn't auto-expand on first boot, use gParted or similar utility to expand the partitions to your liking.

I haven't tested this personally, but it looks like offline viewing was added to the Android version of Netflix v4.12.0: http://bit.ly/2kgLzGu. You'll just need to make sure that you log in to the Google Play Store in order to get the latest update.

Hey guys!
First of all I want to thank you for all the work that you put into this, I really appreciate it.
I have a question concerning HDD compatibility.
I would like to use my 4tb USB-HDD with external power plug with my Odroid C-2. I use your Android Lollipop 5.1.1 release as OS and the HDD file system is NTFS.
When connecting the HDD to the C-2, Android tells me that the USB port is connected but is unable to use the external drive.
Do you know some way to get the HDD connected? If the drive is to big, would it help to split it into partitions?
I am thankful for every advice I can get.

Greets

I believe you need to connect the drive as FAT32.

It might be OK with exFAT. I haven't tried it but you can also use EXT3/4 if exFAT doesn't work.

Hey,

just wanted to let you know that exFAT works just fine. I splitted the HDD into two partitions, 2tb each.
The Odroid only recognizes the drive when plugged into one of the two upper USB ports which is fine for me.

Thanks for your help!

I updated the link in the original post to the latest image. The title is mislabeled, and Marshmallow, not Lollipop, is the version of Pocket Rocket available for the C2.

I have my C2 under Marshmallow with a eMMC and I need to try Lollipop with a TF card.

I don't have a copy of Lollipop configured for Pocket Rocket but it is the same as the Hardkernel version with some apps installed. I believe Lollipop is available at https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-c2/os_im ... droid/v3.9
