Re: LTS Kernel 3.x forever?
Once we get virtualization up and running, you can use the latest kernel directly from mainline. Even virtualized, the system will be faster than a RPi3: we are clocked faster (2.0ghz vs 1.2ghz), we have faster memroy (DDR3 vs DDR2), faster networking (1Gb vs 100Mb Ethernet ), more memory (2GB vs 1GB), faster storage (SD and eMMC access).

Re: LTS Kernel 3.x forever?
As already mentionned by others in this forum, 3.14.y will be EOL next august.
Does HK know if amlogic has some plans to use a more recent kernel in the near future for their SDK ?
I mean, if they were to release one soon, wouldn't the current backporting work be considered some kind of waste of time (this is just a theorical example, i don't really expect them to do so) ?
Btw, talking about backporting work, thanks to all the guys involved. I'll see if i can be a bit more helpful once i receive the one i ordered yesterday.

Re: LTS Kernel 3.x forever?
We had a serious discussion with Amlogic about the mainlining or porting the Kernel 4.4 LTS and we agreed to start it in May.
We consider assigning a few Hardkernel engineers for this project to team up with Amlogic engineers.
We know well this issue is very important and we will share the plan once we have a firm plan.

Re: LTS Kernel 3.x forever?
this is great news! by may though, you might start directly with kernel 4.6
are you planning on mainlining? - this will take more than 1yr - or porting - much faster, you can start after 4.5 is released, and have something working by the time 4.6 is released.

Re: LTS Kernel 3.x forever?
Great news indeed. It was highly unexpected. Does the new kernel come to all devices or only to C2?

This is what everybody needs to hear, I am pretty much glad there is some effort put into mainlining Linux by the manufacturers themselves. Awesome News!

Would it help make things faster to do this on collaboration with the folks here. There are amazing software engineers in this community!odroid wrote:We had a serious discussion with Amlogic about the mainlining or porting the Kernel 4.4 LTS and we agreed to start it in May.

FYI, an amlogic s905 based TV Box has started the mainlining process yesterday

Re: LTS Kernel 3.x forever?
C2 sold out. It seem to be a great success! : )
I myself is on the fens, I have bought 3 raspberry Pi3. I would rather buy odroid C2. But the UNKOWN dedication to deliver update OS worries me.
C1 seems to be out of luck, no new software, while Raspberry 1 and 2 have up to date software (kernel).
If I understand the difference concretely I would much prefer "mainlining" kernel, so it will be a part of the further kernels, and not only a one time port.
Please make a press release celebrating the success of C2, and making a determined stand to mainlining kernel, and support it for atleast 5 years. It think that would give you in the further alot of more customers.

5 years, that is a lifetime in the embedded world and not going to happen.
You can pay $700 for a Galaxy S7 and will at best get 2 years of support.

Re: LTS Kernel 3.x forever?
It's not only a question of age but also of popularity - popular embedded systems normally are supported much longer - even if the manufacturer already stopped development (eö.g. cyanogenmod for the samsung)
My "antique" Rasp 1 that I still keep running as a small reverse proxy says "Linux raspberry 4.1.19+ #858 Tue Mar 15 15:52:03 GMT 2016 armv6l GNU/Linux"
It's a bit bad luck for us odroid users that very popular systems are supported better (by manufact. or/and community) and therefore get even more popular which results in even more support and....
But I really like my odroids a lot.

Re: LTS Kernel 3.x forever?
I meant official support, sure community support is usually much longer...depending on popularity as you stated.
The raspi is not a fair comparison, there is about 7 generations of the pi and all use the same Broadcom GPU. Why do you think that is?

I read something about Kernel 4.6 mainline support of some new ARM SoC, e.g. the Amlogic S905: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... horonix%29

Is it possible to talk about your kernel 4.x plan or is it too early ?
As a side note, i'm glad to have read your posts about datasheet and mali x11 driver, those are very good news.

Re: LTS Kernel 3.x forever?
As an update, the need for a 4.x.y kernel has been eliminated in many cases:
1) Mainline/Ubuntu Official 4.x.y runs unmodified in a virtual machine.
2) USB TV tuners from 4.x.y are now usable from the linuxtv media_build tree.
This covers the majority of use cases as an interim solution while waiting.
