C2 with wifi module3 not working in Ubuntu

Unread postby spades » Fri Jan 12, 2018 2:16 am

I am trying to get Ubuntu 16.0.4.2 lts running and the wifi does not find my router. I also tried 16.0.4.3 and the same thing.
I have tried everything I know (I am a nooby) and have checked and rechecked several times that everything I typed is correct and still nothing.
I noticed that on first boot the error of load kernel codes showed up but don't know if it relavent?
I have tried DLing and installing several times each time cleaning the card and extracting the DL but still wifi doesn't work.
Could someone steer me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.

Try the latest image and show us "iwconfig" output on the terminal.

Well I managed to figure out how to get the wifi working but it should not work this way.
I unplug the antenna and wait till the system fails bot ethernet and wifi attempts to connect and then plug it in and it connects.

Another thing I have been wrestling with is the resolution.
I have a Samsung TV which is UHD and when Mate starts the screen resolution goes to 2160 x3840 and is the only one available in the change display area.
I tried to make the change in the boot.ini but being a NOOBY I messed something up and it would not load after a restart.

So I have 2 issues that I cannot resolve and hope someone can help with them?
Thanks

Copy this original boot.ini file into the boot partition and try to modify it again.
https://github.com/mdrjr/5422_bootini/b ... r/boot.ini

You can disable the Ethernet connection on the network manager in Ubuntu.

I copied the file you sent to my device after I reinstalled 16.0.2.3lts and it will not boot now.
I believe I am now having trouble with my SD card and will have to buy another if I decide to proceed.
Thanks so much for your help but I am at a stand still right now.

Ah sorry.
I gave you a wrong link.
C2 boot.ini is here.
https://github.com/mdrjr/c2_bootini/blo ... r/boot.ini

Anyway, I hope your new SD card will solve the issue.

Now I cannot get the wifi to seek and startup on load. And even when I do what I thought, starting up and then waiting for the system to fail and then insert the wifi while system was running, would work even that fails and I have no wifi? I don't know what to try now so any help would be appreciated.

Oh yeah and the sd card still works but only with the raw load of 16.0.4.3 and not with the new boot.ini supplied by Odroid, sorry.

Another thing I find very strange is that I also have a card loaded with Librelec and Kodi and the wifi and my Keyboard/mouse (Rii mini I8+) runs fine.
But when I load Ubuntu it runs terrible in that the it seems like the receiver and keyboard are having trouble communicating. When you move the mouse it stalls all over the screen.
So I thought I damaged the USB ports but that cannot be since it works with Librelec... There were no drivers installed for the Librelec but do I need drivers for Ubuntu? and where are they?

The rest I will try and explain over on the "C2 over heating" thread I started earlier.

As far as I remember, the USB driver in Ubuntu kernel has an issue with low-speed USB 1.1 devices.
Can you show me "lsusb -t" output?

I was able to get this from the terminal. I have now fixed the size problem and have that working so I can see what I am doing on screen.
I am still not able to connect to wifi no matter what I try and do so I hope the below info will give you some insight as to the problem.
Thanks again.

The wifi module seems to be detected well.

Check "iwconfig" output. If you can find "wlan0" node, your wifi module is ready to use.
In that case, click the "up-down arrows" icon on the right-top side menu to choose an AP.

So below is the iwconfig info.
Although it aeems to be working like it should I do not have the up/down arrows at the top right of the screen?
I am trying to get IPVanish working and am communicating with them about it.
I also learned that my Rii keyboard and mouse needed to have an extension, thye supplied with unit, plugged in for it to better at receiving signal. Maybe others may want to know that.
The thing I haven't tried is the reboot and will wifi work after it. I have been using it and am tiered of fighting with it.

odroid@odroid64:~$ iwconfig
eth0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"5WPBC" Nickname:"<WIFI@REALTEK>"

I think some portion of the system files could be corrupted on your SD card if there is no network manager icon.
Freshly flash the latest image again if you don't mind.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-c2/os_images/ubuntu/v2.4

Use "Etcher" for the validated flashing.

*ODROID* I have flashed the image you point me to many times. The last 3 or 4 times I have used "SD Formatter" and did the full format before I flashed it using "Etcher". Same result.
It is always a problem getting the wifi working and sometimes it takes hours before I can get it to work. Isn't there something else I could do to get it working?
Perhaps you could get me to look at some of the files that might be causing the problem? Right now I am able to have everything working except that VPN will not hold, every 2 minutes it will shutdown.
I am working with IPVanish to try and solve this problem as well.
Please, if you can think of any place we can look to see if something is not right I would rather try that than do another reinstall?

I was reading through some of the forum members problems and found one that had the same problem with a wifi module 4 back in 2016 and someway it got fixed.
There were not explicit directions about how it got fixed or what is needed? If you could steer me to that or find it and let me know I would appreciate it.

Thank you for helping.

I still have no idea why there is no network icon("up-down arrows") on your Mate desktop.
Image

Did you flash "ubuntu64-16.04.3-mate-odroid-c2-20170927.img" file?

"Odroid" I flashed the image last night (twice) each time using the SD formatter full format and it would start and goto desktop but after a couple of minutes (2-3) it would just shut down?
I adjusted the boot.ini so it would load at the resolution I wanted like I did before and double checked it. I even used a different card (Samsung Ultra 32gb 10 HC1)
which is the same type I have been using but not the same card that has the problem. Please let me know what you think.

C2 shutdowns automatically just after root file system partition resizing in the first boot process.
It is well documented in the OS image release note.
https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-c2/os_images/ubuntu/v2.4

Do you still have no network icon in the top-right corner?

I'm sorry I should have told you that I know that happens.
This shuts down and does NOT restart again.
After shutdown it will NOT start again?
I do not know if the network icon is there because it will NOT start.....

You had to unplug-plug the power cable.
It is well explained in the WiKi page.
The RootFS Auto-resize feature has changed!!!
Once everything is done after auto-resizing, the power will turn off automatically.
Please Wait a couple of minutes and plug/unplug the power cable when the blue LED is off.

That doesn't work for me. I have now tried it again and unplugged and replugged and still will not restart.
Again, after it loads and I wait about 10-20 seconds it will restart and shutdown.
This is a different card and I still can't get it to work. I have been able to work through everything but why my wifi module 3 will not strart on it's own when I do a restart to my original load?
I have even gotten my IPVanish working but only after I remove and install the module sometimes once and sometimes several times?
This is pretty amazing that we cannot solve this one issue?
Thanks again for any help.

Do you mean your C2 doesn't boot after auto-resizing process even you unplug/plug the DC plug?

Which SD cards did you try? Let me know brand and model name.
Try fake-flash-test with your cards too.

Yes the C2 does NOT boot after resizing process no matter what I do including unplug/replug and remove card without power and replace card then repower.

The cards I am using are San Disk 32gb HC-1 10 and they worked for anything else I would do with them.
I DL fake-flash-test and ran it on the SD and it tested OK. I also ran chip genius but that did not report card size like I thought it would?

I have the same SD card running but with the only problem being my wifi module 3 not being found reliably, only when I unplug and replug does it get found?
It also does not have the up/down arrow at the top right of the screen. If we could just fix the wifi module 3 problem I would be a happy camper?

Thanks

Let's check the md5sum value of the downloaded OS image.
Code: Select all
31cc260d54f280f84ac015100395e98b  ubuntu64-16.04.3-mate-odroid-c2-20170927.img.xz

If the md5sum value matches, your SD card might not be compatible with C2 UHS mode.
Disable the UHS mode by editing the boot.ini file to see what happens.
Code: Select all
setenv disableuhs "true"

https://github.com/mdrjr/c2_bootini/blo ... t.ini#L118
You might need to use a plain text editor like Notepad++ or EditPlus on Windows.

And try the first booting and auto-resizing.
The up-down arrow icon must exist if the Ubuntu root file system is fine.

I have done the above items and they did not produce anything different.
The MD5chksum is a match to the file I used and the disableuhs to false did not do anything either.
I have not been able to find anything anywhere that has produced any changes to my situation.
I am still trying things but nothing seems to work.

Can you check "ifconfig" output on terminal or SSH?
If there is no "eth0" node, your board seems to have a hardware issue on network part(Ethernet).

Normally, we are using a screenshot app in Applications -> Accessories -> Take Screenshot.
Or just push "PrintScreen" key on your keyboard.
If you can't do it, just a take a picture with your smartphone.

It doesn't put the image in the post? That's the part I do not know how to do?

Up-down arrow icon could be changed to the WiFi icon once the WiFi connection is detected and there is no Ethernet connection.
So your WiFi module 3 should be fine.
Can you see any AP names if you click it?

So I have given up trying to use the wifi module 3 since it is completely unreliable.
I would recommend that no one should buy or try to use the module 3 with Ubuntu.
I purchased a module 5 and it is working correctly and is very reliable.
I still believe there is something not right in Ubuntu since module 3 works fine in Librelec.
For now I will use it with that installation and have to move on, disappointed.
