In real life, first test,
7 GB file from Synology NAS (smb share) to Odroid C2 (16 GB eMMC/Ubuntu).
Speed result : 625 Mbit/s. Very nice.

That is not bad at all, using performance governor?

No. Just copied the file with Caja, needed about 90 seconds.

I am only able to transfer 20MB/s from a USB hard disk (attached to my c2) to my home NAS. The same USB disk is able to transfer 50MB/s from a PC (using a USB 2.0 port). I was hoping to use the c2 as a media player and NAS, but gave up due to the low performance.

Something must be wrong, someone was using two drives in raid and getting a little over 100MB/s

The USB 2.0 bus on the C2 limits the max linear raw read from a single attached disk to about 35MB/s (yes, even SSD).
Attaching two disks in a striped RAID configuration on the two separate USB buses doubles this to ~70MB/s.
Unfortunately, in reality there are also speed loses to network and filesystem overheads, memory management, etc, so the speed in practice depends on multiple factors.

50MB/s is faster than the USB 2.0 bus limit, there is some in-memory caching happening here.
The C2 is able to receive Gigabit LAN traffic at >100MB/s, but has no fast enough storage to store it.

I thought you said you got about 107MB/s, I'm too tired.

Thanks fvolk. I re-ran my PC transfers and saw 36MB/s on USB 2.0 and 87MB/s on USB 3.0 . I was remembering it wrong. I checked my samba read from the c2 and I saw a max of 22MB/s with the same USB drive.

Samba is limited by high cpu usage. Either try multiple paralel samba transfers (to balance all cores), or try nfs
