[Help me] Review a trouble-shooting guide for beginners

Unread post by odroid » Thu Jun 09, 2016 5:31 pm

Hello,

I need your help.

I've spent very long time to help new coming users in this forum everyday.
So I really want to make a simple and easy trouble shooting guide to save my life. ;)

Please review this preliminary version of trouble shooting guide for C2 users.

Any comment and advice are welcome! I'm begging for your help. ;)
Once we complete this C2 version, we can easily make XU4/C1 version quickly.

Nice idea :-)

Reminds me a bit of all the XKCD flowcharts, most recently this one that I spent ages reading (I love maps!): https://xkcd.com/1688/

Serious comments:

Box 7, what does "on the right position" mean?

What is thr purpose of the "yes" arrow from box 4? It is suggesting that the power is OK but the red LED is not on. Does that ever happen?

In box 10, what does "clearly" mean? Do you mean "cleanly"?

Suggestions:

- Add "measure voltage on header pins".
- Add "connect serial console and observe output".
- Add "try other power input (microUSB vs. round power plug)".
- Add "try other memory type (emmc vs.microSD)".
- Add "try a different HDMI cable".
- Add "try shorting HDMI connector shield to USB connector shield".

We've revised the trouble-shooting guide.
Since most geeks(including me) doesn't read any guide carefully, we want to make it as simple as possible.

You can also add checks for:
* does it respond to ping over LAN
* can you ssh in from LAN

EMMC vs Micro SD card
Is it better to use a 32gb EMMC (android) or a 8gb EMMC (android) paired with a 32gb micro sd card?

Idiots Guide to plugging things in!
Maybe kids and first timers will benefit.

There should be information for basic Network issues.
if that is a common enough problem.

Yes idiot guide would help for people like me...

Maybe worth mentioning NOT to use windows native Notepad program to edit boot.ini as this somehow corrupt the file resulting in bootup issue.
I used Notepad++ and it's working

Good idea, as someone who has been using Linux for over 20 years it's easy to forget to mention this little nugget.

flowcharts are good, so are free tools to make them; (draw.io etc)
I would put #1 higher up just so it stands out more as a starting point.
#1 and #5 yes options should have a 45 degree branch or there should be a 2nd arrow.
#5 should have a "(are you using a boot media imaged by OEM)?" because the sticker is not really saying much.
#10 should be "win32diskimager (or dd/md5 on Unix like)"
It is best to focus on "Is it running" but there can be other helpfull flowcharts for all the other n00b or 1337 issues (network, HDMI, USB, kernel, multiboot, etc)

Would it make sense to establish a context for the guide? For example:
My C2 has been running well for some weeks but today I (had an issue, could not boot etc.)
My C2 just came in the mail and ...
One of my kids has been using the C2 and I need to figure out how to restore it to 'like new'.
Each of the above may require different need.

A few things that have tripped me up include:
Issues getting an image onto media ( microSD, eMMC ) from:
- faulty microSD adapters
- faulty media
- corrupted media (perhaps a link to guides showing how to make the media 'Like New')
- Post 'First Boot' sequence (i.e. sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade)

It might have been handy to know the sequence for the Blue led. I believe it is on solid initially, then flashes to a heart-beat cadence to signal normal operation or a rapid flashing to signal a kernel panic. My blue led is currently off so it is also handy to know the function is configurable.
