C2 dead???

Unread post by davidwkerr » Tue Feb 12, 2019 9:32 am

I have two C2s each with HIFi Shield2 which I have used as Kodi media players since purchasing them 14months ago. One uses emmc plus SD and the other is SD only.

One of these (the SD only one) recently stopped working and I found that the 32GB uSD card was experiencing I/O errors. Normally the units run without a screen but the problem became obvious when I plugged in a HDMI screen.

I did a ddrescue on the SD to a brand new SanDisk Ultra 64GB. This only partially booted, stopping with a SystemD problem.

Then I tried the emmc card from the other working C2 and the defective C2 would not even boot. Red led and no blue led. Then I built a working SD of Ubuntu 18 on the good C2 and this worked on the good one but not the one that is appearing increasingly defective.

Now I have prepared a 64GB card on a separate machine and this also does not even boot a first time on the defective C2. Only red led and not even a flash from the blue led.

So it is looking more and more as if I have a defective C2 which has been partially dying and has now fully died? I have always run both C2s off the Hardkernel 5V adaptors. I have checked the voltage and it is 5.01V with the C2 (either one) connected.

Does any one have any further suggestions? Maybe I'll have to attach a serial console and see if there is any life at all. I have removed the HiFi Shield2 and this improved nothing.

Regards,
David

Have you been running the devices with the jumper connected?

Here in Australia we have had the hottest summer since records began. Ambient often 40degC. However I did check the working C2 and CPU is around 65deg. Also, when I said media centres, I meant that they only stream music and internet radio- no video. So I do not think heat is the problem.

Each unit has been running (since day 1) in only the bottom of the case with the top exposed. This is necessary to fit the HiFi Shield2 and also provides better cooling.

I'm about to connect the serial console.

Cheers,
Dave

Also never overclocked. Here is what I get out of the serial console when I turn on the power:

QA5:B;SVN:B72;POC:17F;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:0;READ:41;USB:3;SERIAL:4;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:0;READ:41;USB:3;SERIAL:4;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:0;READ:41;USB:3;SERIAL:4;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:0;READ:41;USB:3;SERIAL:4;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:0;READ:41;USB:3;SERIAL:4;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:0;READ:41;USB:3;SERIAL:4;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:0;READ:41;USB:3;

Each sequence comes out every few seconds.

Nothing I type seems to do anything.

Now something bizarre. I put in the corrupted 32GB Kingston uSD and the thing booted a fair bit of the way! This was originally created with Ubuntu 14.04 and upgraded to 16.04.

But back to three 64GB Sandisk Ultras and one 128GB Sandisk Extreme and it is back to the above console output. All those cards and the emmc card work in the other C2 (which is newer than the bad C2). I tried disableuhs="disableuhs" and disableuhs="true" to no avail. I tried 18.04 and 16.04.

Any assistance would be much appreciated,
Dave

The message from serial console means it couldn't find any boot media.
I think some portion of the eMMC/SD interface seems to be damaged.
Can you slightly press top side of the SD card slot?

When I press the holder and also it appears the same when I type 1 and enter, hundreds or thousands of lines pour out, like this:

I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE I0000F300F194EEEE

I think your C2 seems to be damaged by unknown electrical shock. :(

Not sure why you think shock. I am an electronics professional and I have 6 Odroids (4 XU4 and these two C2s) and a number of BBBs. The bad C2 seems to have failed over a number of days and it is my only Odroid to have ever failed. It is 13.5 months old. It uses the standard Odroid power supply. At first it was failing during the Ubuntu boot, then I/O errors, then partial boot sometimes and not boot at all other times. Finally it just does this.

So if it is dead, I am not happy.

Sorry about that.

If you have a heat gun, try applying some heat to the CPU.
It will fix uncertain cold soldering problem on the CPU BGA pins.
But it may not be helpful if there is other issues in the CPU inside.

A weird outcome.
Many thanks to those who responded. At least now I am more familiar with the serial console and a few other things.
I removed the heatsink in preparation to some SMD rework but I am glad I did not get that far.
I noticed that the board was marked "C1+" and NOT C2!
I pulled out the invoices and other paperwork and discovered that I bought one C2 and WIFI dongles and HiFi Shields from Hardkernel but I got the last C2 in stock. So I bought the other C2 from a local distributor AND instead of receiving a C2, I received a C1+ which I did not know until now.

Because I bought all my Odroids with working SD cards and emmc cards as well, I never noticed this. You have to look closely to see that the boards are different and it becomes even harder when the HiFi2 shields are in place. So that explains why it would not even start to boot- though I am surprised that nothing comes out on the serial console even with debug level set in boot.ini.

In any case, I downloaded the C1 Ubuntu 18 image and put it onto a 64GB SD and it is all working properly! Whew!

I know the C2 and C1+ are different processors but it is strange that boot doesn't say or do anything. So that is another simple thing to have learned.

So it's a bit like when they ask you "Have you plugged in the power cord?" If someone had said "Are you sure it is a C2, I would have said 'of course!'" But I would have been wrong.

My faith in Odroid reliability is totally restored.

I'll take up the delivery issue with the reseller. But for what I want, I cannot really tell the difference between C1+ and C2.

Best Regards,
David

C1+ PCB is blue and C2 PCB is black. :o
And their boot blobs are not compatible with each other at all.
