Playing 8 channels (7.1) through HiFi Shield 2 S/PDIF

Post by radoburansky »

Is it possible to play 8-channel audio (7.1 surround) though S/PDIF optical output of HiFi Shield 2 even though it has only 2 (stereo) analog outputs?

We were unable to implement multi-channel passthrough functionality.

Do you think this will work with Odroid C2 (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS)? Documentation says it's 100% class compliant therefore I'm hoping that no extra drivers are needed for 8-channel playback.

Yes! GIGAPORT eX is fully class compliant, so it is supported by the USB audio driver from the ALSA package which is part of most Linux distributions.

As a rule of thumb, USB devices that work with x64 Linux should also work with Linux on ARM platforms.

EDIT: Especially class compliant devices. But I can't believe that thing is class compliant, if drivers for Windows are required.
