Boom Bonnet: [SOLVED] This sound device does not have any controls

Post by mad_ady »

I'm in a pickle again... I'm using the boom bonnet on a C2 running ubuntu 20.04. Installed the boom bonnet as per the wiki instructions, but I don't get any sound controls in alsamixer and sound volume is really low (despite boom bonnet volume knob being maxed out, and my speakers being to the max).
I am running this setup for a few months and sound levels were higher and I think I remember I had volume control in alsa (at least I had on the C1/ubuntu 18).

Any ideas what to try to increase volume?

PCM5102 DAC has no hardware analog volume control.
The digital attenuator volume control must be controlled by PulseAudio probably in Ubuntu 18 Mate.

Ok, thanks! I played a bit with MPD and enabled alsa output from the boom bonnet. With alsa, I can get the true volume I was expecting, so it must be some pulse-audio setting that attenuates too much even at 100% volume.

Here's a db reading at 1m from the speakers - I was playing an Aerosmith song, and the difference is switching from alsa to pulseaudio. The ~20dB sound is very faint.

I'm glad alsa works at full volume.
Here is the relevant mpd config:

Code: Select all

audio_output { type "pulse" name "Boom Bonnet via Pulse" # sink "alsa_output.platform-odroid_sound_card.5.analog-stereo" sink "alsa_output.platform-odroid_dac.stereo-fallback"
        mixer_type      "software"
        server  "127.0.0.1"
}
audio_output {
        type "alsa" name "Boom Bonnet via Alsa"
        device  "plughw:CARD=ODROIDDAC,DEV=0"                 mixer_type      "software"                    }
