Volume control on Hifi Shield 2

Unread post by psm » Mon Aug 27, 2018 7:27 am

Hello
This is my first post so i would like to say "hi!" :)

A couple of months ago i've got a hifi shield 2 for my C1+
I've been using RCA output and everything was fine until i've decided to use one of free optical inputs on my CA DacMagic Plus.

Why? Because i bought a new active monitors and they have XLR inputs (like DacMagic)... and i can connect it to more than single source (two optical inputs and one async. USB).
I have chosen 'ODROID-HDMI' in Volumio... and lost volume control :(

So i have a question - is it possible to control volume while using optical output? ... with bit-perfect...?

Thank you for any tips...

Regards
P.

AFAIK no you can't control volume with optical line out.

No. SPDIF is a fixed voltage level output, level control in C1+ is not possible.
Connect the SPDIF output to a Monitor Speaker controller with SPDIF Input and use the knob on the monitor controller to control levels to your monitors.

Hello,

So, volume control is possible only on RCA output and (as i see, on diagram), SPDIF is a simple I2S bypass...
It (opical SPDIF out) could be achieved without HiFi Shield 2...

I think it is important informatiom... maybe some update on wiki and HK's webpage?

Anyway - thank you for the information :)

Best regards,
P.

Thank you for the suggestion.
I've added a note on the WiKi page (very bottom side).

attaching a spdif optical transmitter is possible on the c-2 without using the hi-fi shield.
.i`ve done it myself..don’t know exactly where my thread or post is but if i find it..i will add a view topic to this thread..

only pins required are the spdif out /master clock and the ground and the 5 volt/3.3 power to attach the transmitter ..
just select the opticalhi fi shield..etc..etyc..
in the sound options menu..there is also the need for some software adjustments needed as well.
.i think there already in the wiki as per adding the hifi shield should do it...the software that is..
then hook up your optical and your good to go..

volume i thought was possible to adjust via the gui as normal..i found this was on a c2 ..i may be wrong been a long time..

dont think it should differ on a c1/c1+..etc.etc..although..if i dig out my hardware..bottom of the pile..i am shure it would work...as in i have to find it..

i found the board i made up here some pics..
