[SOLVED] Boom Bonnet pops/cracks with Kodi and HDMI

Unread postby mad_ady » Sat Sep 09, 2017 10:06 pm

My Kodi (on C2) outputs audio through HDMI, and the boom bonnet is used by mpd through pulseaudio.
When I switch to HDMI or when (after a period of idle time) I navigate through kodi, I get a cracle/pop on the first sound. Subsequent sounds are fine.
Also, when I start or stop a movie, I get the pop, but no problems after that.
It may be related to these dmesg messages:
Code: Select all

I guess kodi tries to enable sound playback through i2s, though I've told it to use hdmi.

I wonder, does this happen with all the dacs, or do I need to change anything in the Kodi configuration?

Ok, I've managed to capture a few logs in the two cases when this happens:
1. I wake up Kodi from a longer sleep period (switch to HDMI and click an arrow key to turn off the screen-saver). On my next key press the speakers make a crack sound (Kodi is trying to play the sound for a UI event). Here are the logs:
kodi.log:

After I continue navigation, the cracking doesn't happen anymore, unless there is a long period of idle time.

2. On playback - when the amlcodec is loaded, I get another cracking sound, with these logs:

So, it looks like kodi tries to open HDMI via I2S for playback, and this still causes a click or pop sound.
Is this generalised with all DACs? Or are people using DACs not using HDMI audio so this isn't an issue for them?

I could meet the same issue.
I think other people might not use an I2S DAC with HDMI audio together.

BTW, what happens if you remove pulseaudio and use ALSA only?

I haven't tried since I use pulseaudio for mpd, and the webcam. I will try and provide feedback.

I've noticed that the pops/cracks happen after this message in dmesg:
Code: Select all
Sep 24 15:22:31 192.168.1.14 [199579.696598] aiu i2s playback disable
Sep 24 15:22:31 192.168.1.14 [199579.696666] audio_hw_958_enable 0

So, something disables i2s playack and when it is re-enabled, I get the pops and cracks. Maybe there is a way to increase the timeout before disabling it and keeping it active for longer (e.g. 24h). Any ideas where those messages are coming from and where I'd have to look inside the drivers?

Hmm, I think I found a work-around. In Kodi -> Settings -> System -> Audio -> Keep audio device alive : Always (It was set to 1 min). This should keep the boom bonnet from cracking when idle. It only cracks when I start Kodi, which is acceptable.
So far it works, I'm not sure if there are any side-effects. I'll post if I find any :)

It seems my workaround isn't that good. After I play a video and some time passes I am unable to play any other video. Here's some kodi.log output:
