C1 won't boot (red light only)

Post by sq8jmd »

Hello,
I've got two C1 boards. Both of them was working good to moment when i've do apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade on one of them. Board has stop booting. I've tried to use another MicroSD card that is working in other C1 (also after apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade), also i've changed (and measure) PSU for be sure that voltage is ok.

On UART i can only see:
QA5:A;SVN:B72;POC:17F;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:6;USB:3;SERIAL:4;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:6;USB:3;SERIAL:4;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:6;USB:3;SERIAL:4;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;
and last part this string is repeating from time to time. On second board i also see this text but after short time i can see bootloader.

I've tried to download and run from newest ubuntu image but also without any effect.
I use MicroSD card GoodRam 16GB UHS-1.
What can i do/try to fix this problem? This boards came to me about week ago.

Can you post the photo or product link of your MicroSD? It's very new to me, so I doubt it's not compatible with C1 yet.
Strongly recommend you to try with SanDisk MicroSD.

Hi, thanks for answer.
MicroSD:

Thing is that the C1 was working on that card before dist-upgrade without any problems. And other two (i've borrow one from my friend) C1 is working on that card without any problems. I'll search SanDisk and try.

Hello,
I have the same issue after upgrading, I am using SANDISK extreme and extreme plus each 16gb for C1...

actually it not the only issue I have... also Ethernet is messed up and has very strange behaviour...
Using kernel 3.1064-37 everything is working fine... after upgrading I have bunch of Problems...
Same when I start with released Image v1.3... and same when upgrading minimal Image...

most stable release is v1.2... from my Point of view...

Hi,
today i've buy SandDisk card (photo attached). On C1 problem still exist, it can't boot, only red light with text on UART interface like this:
QA5:A;SVN:B72;POC:17F;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:6;USB:3;SERIAL:4;
I've tried two different card readers (build in notebook with two different adapters from micro to normal) and using external reader. Everything without any success. Is there something that i can do or i can only do RMA?

And this is new card described in this post:

@sq8jmd, your new MicroSD must work if C1 is not damaged.
How did you flash the image on the card and what image are you trying?
Have you check MD5SUM if it is correct with your image before flashing?

I've used dd with parameters

Code: Select all

dd if=ubuntu-14.04.1lts-lubuntu-odroid-c1-20150204.img of=/dev/sdb bs=1M conv=fsync
and after that do sync few times to be sure that everything is flushed out from cache to MicroSD. MD5SUM i've also checked. Now i'll try android to see if problem is only with ubuntu on this C1 (currently i've got two C1 and sometimes third from my friend).

@MPPS Could you specify more detail what is your network issue? Or better to create your own thread if your C1 can boot up since network issue is not match with the title of this.

@tobetter
I know it is not part of this thread, therefore I highlighted the text which might be of interest (bold text): in more details...
I was working on latest kernel... had the red light issue... removed the serial cable... enabled HDMI in boot.ini... board booted successfully... ( I have had this issue several times... but this time I have done no reflashing I just removed the cable)
this was just what I saw last night working with C1... actually could it be a power issue due to the serial cable?

my network issue I posted here: http://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?f ... t=100#wrap
but I am still working on it...

@MPPS, understand. I am not sure what is exact status since no status of blue LED. If blue LED was off while red LED on, it means your C1 was stuck to start bootloader. If blue LED is steady on, failed to start Linux kernel. Even if blue LED is blinking but failure to boot, your C1 is stuck on mounting root file system or some other problem. I don't think serial cable cause the power issue at all. I am curious what was blue LED status last night and what is network issue on your C1.

@tobetter
My blue light was also off...
This might be the same issue as @sq8jmd described initially... I have the same serial output as described here...
I am using SD cards SANDSIK extreme and extreme plus

My network issue is something different and has nothing to do with this thread... (I hope ;) )
([off_topic] I have a server with samba and AP running, after upgrading kernel, samba is not reachable anymore... but it seems C1 has a new MAC after upgrade and eth2 became standard network adapter of C1 which of course is not configured to be network adapter... this is my impression after viewing /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules [/off_topic])

@MPPS, hmmm....actually I have no SanDisk Extreme, hence I am not sure if it also have MicroSD compatible issue. But don't believe it has or don't to want belive. :( I'd check my pocket if I have the one. Anyway, your off-topic was what I guessed since others also had same problem after upgrade. As you said MAC is changed because of a bug and now fixed.

I've made some test with my C1:
- try to run Android - without any success (still that same on UART),
- try to use two different cards (GoodRam and Sandisk described in earlier post) created with "win32DiskImager V1.1 for ODROID" - without any success.

To be sure i've measure voltage, changed PSU, trying to start with and without HDMI/network/USB devices. Problem still exist.
On second C1 every card that i was using to test possibly broken C1 (after dist-upgrade as i describe in earlier post) and everything was working good and booted without any problems. Is there any else test that i can do or now i can only contact tech support (with link to this topic) to create RMA?

I used the serial console with success on kernel 3.10.64-37 after upgrade I get the same output as posted here first...
When I plug off the serial cable the board boots without any issues...

As work around I plugged in the serial cable a second or two after the board has been powered on... In this case I could use the serial console...

@odroid
No, i'll not open new thread. I've opened this thread with my problem and i'll not open new one with that same (my) problem.

Today i've seen something new to my on UART:
EEEE I000023002194EEEE I000013001194EEEE I000003000194EEEE I0000F200F094EEEE I0000E200E094EEEE I0000D200D094EEEE I0000C200C094EEEE I0000B200B094EEEE I0000A200A094EEEE I000092009094EEEE I000082008094EEEE I000072007094EEEE I000062006094EEEE I000052005094EEEE I000042004094EEEE I000032003094EEEE I000022002094EEEE I000012001094
After googling i've found only one identical case http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php? ... 1200/page2. So now i can see that only RMA will help me.

Ps. I've also tested trick that @MPPS has done - without any success.

Oh.. sorry! MPPS hijacked probably. :(

Yes, please contact "odroid at hardkernel dot com" with a link of this thread.
She will help your RMA process if you bought the board from us directly.
Otherwise, contact your local distributor.

Re: C1 won't boot (red light only)

I've been having this issue somewhat chronically and I don't believe that it has anything to do with the micro-SD card -- I've finally been able to reproduce it with the serial console attached, no SD card installed, and nothing else connected.

It appears to be an issue with the boot-loader;

Normally on power-on the boot process executes then repeats continuously:

QA5:A;SVN:B72;POC:17F;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:10;USB:3;SERIAL:4;
STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:10;USB:3;SERIAL:4;
STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:10;USB:3;SERIAL:4;
STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:10;USB:3;SERIAL:4;
etc. (CR's added for readability)

When the red-light/no-boot problem occurs only the first line is output via serial, and never repeats:

QA5:A;SVN:B72;POC:17F;STS:0;BOOT:0;INIT:10;BOOT:1;INIT:10;USB:3;SERIAL:4;
(nothing else)

I've had this issue occur on both AC power via the adapter as well as DC 5V via the USB power adapter off of an external lithium-ion USB battery pack.

If there is an issue with this bootloader - Is it even possible to update it?

@JF1001001
When the boot ROM can't load the boot-code from the storage, it repeats trying to load the boot-code.
When the boot ROM loads the boot-code, it don't repeat.
But when the boot-code is corrupted or wrong, it stops as you observed.

Which SD card do you use? As you may know, there are a few cards which don't work with the C1.
How did you flash the SD-card? Which OS did you installed?

Thanks for the reply

The card I was using was the Samsung Pro 32g -- A card which almost universally is reported to have problems with this board. The interesting thing is being able to reproduce the bootloader completely stopping after one boot attempt, even after removing the card, disconnecting power, and powering the unit back on. Maybe I didn't have it powered off long enough to clear memory, or the RTC battery was contributing to that.

I picked up a Sandisk card and have not had any boot problems yet. This is frustrating because it's a Sandisk Ultra (which is supposed to pull 45 meg/sec) which hasn't been able to write more than 10 meg/second at any block size. The Samsung 32g Pro writes > 70 megs/sec in the same card read reader at 1M. That's pretty omg fast.

So it appears that I've gotten one problem out of the way which led to another -- Instability. While plotting graphs via thermd (Perl) on it I was having all kinds of random crashes. Segfaults, memory-related perl crashes (don't remember the exact error), hangs.. After noticing that the CPU was uncomfortably hot to touch at idle, I found a heatsink lying around which matches the mounting holes and attached it. So far it's been building charts in a loop for about 20 minutes now without issue. I take it you don't want to run these things without a heatsink..

Now if I could only get the keyboard to work reliably (I thought this was a USB issue, until I had the same problem on the serial console), and figure out why video acceleration on window drawing functions isn't used.....
