Update on 1080/50p and 1080/60p not working properly?

Unread postby noggin » Mon May 11, 2015 9:08 pm

Is there any update on the serious faults on the Odroid C1 boards that mean using them with AV amps is impossible without flashing to black frequently, and suffering audio drop outs when connected directly to a TV?

viewtopic.php?f=115&t=11837&start=100 Is the thread - but odroid have not contributed to it for a while.

What is the status on work to fix this serious fault? We currently can't use 1080/50p or 1080/60p modes at all with mainstream Home Theatre amps - which work fine with Raspberry Pi, Chromebox, Chromecast, Apple TV etc.

(1080/24p and 1080/50i and 60i modes appear more stable - and run at half the HDMI clock rate of 1080/50p and 60p...)

My Onkyo receiver and LG TV 1080p/60hz don't have the issue while some people have it... which av amp do you have?
Is you country supplying 50Hz AC? or 60Hz AC?

Hello,
Would you guys try my custom build to fix up the issue of the resolution on HDMI?

Ubuntu
1. Download the file below and extract it which contains kernel image and modules.

2. Copy uImage into BOOT partition, and lib/* into trusty partition, so that my custom build kernel and module can be loaded on boot.
3. It would be good to back up previous files on your MicroSD or eMMC just in case if your C1 can not boot.

Android
1. Download kernel image from below link.

2. In order to get into fastboot mode, your can execute the command reboot fastboot on Android console.
3. Replace my custom kernel image, uImage, with fastboot
4. Then you can update with new uImage with this command while USB cable is connected between your desktop and C1.
fastboot flash boot uImage

Please try such resolutions if still C1 make flickering pictures with your TV and AV receiver. I've updated few guys, I shared this personally for the same or similar issues, that they can watch proper picture on 1080P50 and 1080P60. So...please update me how is yours. :D

Please do not hesitate contact me to help you up for installation or test, I would be happy to hear that this works for you guys.
Thank you in advance.

UPDATE: For people who wants to know what are changed in this custom build.
My custom build contains new PLL settings for HDMI, these are shared by AMLogic. It's just a code with understandable constants for particular registers, so I thought it is meaningless to share at the moment. Obviously it will be opened to GIthub when this changes helps to fix HDMI issues we have.

Would you download below two file and copy into FAT partition of your MicroSD. On next boot, Android will load boot.init and uImage from FAT partition, not from hidden partition.

Let me know if this works for you.

I still have audio drop outs on android (with your dropbox boot.ini and uImage), but I'm not fully sure if it loaded up the right uImage. Actually I'm pretty sure it loaded the wrong...
I will test a bit further to find the right partition/folder while android is running.

[edit]
Just realized that your boot.ini is the linux variant and not android one (I'm on Android).
Will now test with android boot.ini.

[Edit2]
With just the uImage and boot.ini test I can't see any difference. Although I'm not 100% sure it loaded the right boot.ini.

Not yet, as I hate to reinstall and re-configure all apps ;)
I am not yet sure when I will do it. I might try it on my second card with Ubuntu though.

I had a similar issue like this as well. The Ubuntu desktop would not appear...
I fixed it by ssh into the C1 and running:
odroid-utility.sh
Select the option to resize the root partition and then reboot.

These new images have fixed my HDMI issues.

Its already on the ubuntu image.
When you ssh in by:
ssh root@ip.address.of.c1

Password: odroid
Then just type this command:
odroid-utility.sh

You can find the correct path by:
find odroid-utility.sh

I have tested image with android with yamaha avr that has caused flickering. It looks that there is no more flickering and that the problem looks fixed.
It would be useful if openelec image with those fixes could be build that more testing with avr could be done to see if the things now are really solved.
TNX for now.

@ tobetter, just confirming the Ubuntu test Kernel is Linux 3.10.75 ?

I've just updated Ubuntu and want to make sure I did not update to the old Kernel.
I did untick the old one from the software updater list.

@tobetter: Thanks for your effort, tested the android image and it works flawlessly. No more HDMI blanking issues on the C1.
I came from here: viewtopic.php?f=117&t=8920. So in my case this doesn't necessarily has to be a hardware issue as your build prooves, that it could be fixed via software.
So, how do we proceed with this? Any chance the fix goes upstream?

Just trying an experimental OpenElec build - and so far no outages. Looks to be the same issue that the Pi 2 had (and which was fixed by the Pi foundation...) - PLL clocks drifting a little bit too far for amps to cope with?

Can also confirm that with new openelec there is no more blanking on avr (yamaha 775).
It would be nice if the newest 5.0 beta (isengard) would be used since 4.2 is not being developed anymore.

Only thing I notice now (though not really for this thread) is that 576/50i native DVDs don't deinterlace to 50p but instead to 25p. They don't appear to be hardware accelerated or deinterlaced, and I don't seem to be able to get a software deinterlace to 50p?

There is an issue whit this build that odroid will not reboot when select reboot. The display stays blank and comes not up. You have to press reset to bring up the display gain. Even changing into DVI mode does not help.

Hi all,
sorry for resurrecting, but I found similar problem on my C2.
my HW:
Odroid C2 -> AV receiver Pioneer VSX-933 -> Philips 55PUS6101

SW: archarm kernel 3.14.79-x
no problem with video or resolution. All works (only issues with hw accel)

SW: hardkernel ubuntu 18
problem with connection through AV receiver. On TV is visible "No signal"
When I connect C2 directly to TV, then I can see picture. (and have hw accel)
When I set on AV receiver scaling up to 4k. Then picture appears but really broken (I think it show 571 resolution which is wrong.

I'm using mainly 1920x1080p60hz, but another resolutions was broken too.
I will try to create own modeline if it will help. Because the picture on screen have bad offset (in all cases). Visible picture is smaller about 50 pix, than real.

So I think, the HDMI timing was broken between 3.14 and 3.16 (ubuntu 18).
I saw a patch for C1, is possible to try make this patch also on C2? Thanks

Or maybe the EDID is broken and the modeline is computed wrongly.

I figured out it was because of wrong EDID. From some reason previous kernel was ok with it. But the new 3.16 kernel modules reports it wrong. (or maybe differen uboot?)

Hello Edison,

Could you try manual display setting as following?
You need to modify boot.ini in the vfat file system under /media/boot/boot.ini.

Change "display_autodetect" to "false" and check if the resolution is set as "1080p60hz"
Code: Select all
# Auto Detection of Monitor settings based on your Screen information
# See: http://odroid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=en:c2_auto_detect_display
# setenv display_autodetect "true"
setenv display_autodetect "false"

# 1080 Lines (1920x1080)
setenv m "1080p60hz" # Progressive 60Hz
