1. Yes, I've been doing that for a while, a C2 and a XU4 is the boards that builds all our Ubuntu packages, a U3 serves as a file server for this setup.

2. You can, but it doesn't have the industrial temperature/protections required.

Yup, I confirm that netconsole is now working for C1:
Code: Select all
$ dmesg | grep netconsole
[   72.853643] netpoll: netconsole: local port 6666
[   72.853783] netpoll: netconsole: local IPv4 address 192.
68.1.13
[   72.859138] netpoll: netconsole: interface 'eth0'
[   72.864151] netpoll: netconsole: remote port 6666
[   72.868816] netpoll: netconsole: remote IPv4 address 192
168.1.5
[   72.875090] netpoll: netconsole: remote ethernet address

do an
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install linux-image-c1

I've tested it and netconsole works this time. Hope you get the error message. But test netconsole after you enable it (you should get some messages that netconsole has been enabled on the receiver).

I suspect you copy/pasted shell commands into configuration files. Can you show us the output of:
Code: Select all
cat /etc/rsyslog.conf
cat /etc/rsyslog.d/netconsole.conf
ls -l /var/log/netconsole.log
cat /etc/logrotate.d/netconsole
sudo netstat -upan | grep 6666

Yes. You've added the configuration to /etc/rsyslog.conf and it includes commands from the command-line. To fix it do the following steps on both transmitter and receiver:

1. Delete from /etc/rsyslog.conf the lines starting with $ cat /etc/rsyslog.d/netconsole.conf up to the end of the file

2. Create an empty file:
Code: Select all
sudo touch /etc/rsyslog.d/netconsole.conf

3. Using your favorite editor, as root, add the following lines to /etc/rsyslog.d/netconsole.conf and save:
Code: Select all
$ ModLoad imudp
$ RuleSet remote

/var/log/netconsole.log
& stop

$InputUDPSeverBindRuleset remote
$UDPServerRun 6666

$RuleSet RSYSLOG_DefaultRuleset

4. Restart syslog
Code: Select all
sudo service rsyslog restart

5. Retest that it's listening
Code: Select all
sudo netstat -upan | grep 6666

Hi,

Done as posts but system netconsole.log still record it's own data.

Cos, Pc 1 is off & pc 2 netconsole.log records it own log file.

I need to record log file from pc 1 to pc 2 ------ pc 9 to pc 10 & pc 10 to pc 1.
So if PC 1 fail, I able to see the problem in PC 2.

Make sure you're using the correct ips and mac addresses in /etc/modprobe.d/netconsole.conf. The first part refers to local addressing and the last part is the receiver configuration

Did you make the changes I suggested two posts ago?
Use a service like pastebin.com and show us your /etc/rsyslog.conf and /var/log/netconsole.log

Sorry, my mistake. I meant /etc/rsyslog.d/netconsole.conf insted of /var/log/netconsole.log.

Your /etc/rsyslog.conf looks ok. Also I see you don't have any newer logs than Jul 18.

Hi,
If #netconsole.conf
$ ModLoad imudp
$ RuleSet remote
/var/log/netconsole.log

$InputUDPSeverBindRuleset remote
$UDPServerRun 6666
$RuleSet RSYSLOG_DefaultRuleset

-# sudo service rsyslog restart
sudo netstat -upan | grep syslog
- # Nothing Show

If ##netconsole.conf
$ModLoad imudp (without space)
$RuleSet remote (without space)
/var/log/netconsole.log
& stop
$InputUDPSeverBindRuleset remote
$UDPServerRun 6666
$RuleSet RSYSLOG_DefaultRuleset

Oh, I never noticed the sapce before $ and the commands. The version without space shows that syslog is listening on port 6666, which is good. In this configuration can you test the following?
Code: Select all
sender-odroid$ dmesg -n 8
sender-odroid$ sudo echo "Sender test" > /dev/kmsg
receiver-odroid$ tail -f /var/log/netconsole.log

From PC 192.168.228.1 -
root@odroid$ dmesg -n 8
root@odroid$ sudo echo "Sender test" > /dev/kmsg

At PC 192.168.228.2 -

Ok, let's split the problem in half.
On 192.168.228.2:
Code: Select all
sudo service rsyslog stop
netcat -ul 6666

On 192.168.228.1:
Code: Select all
dmesg -n 8
sudo echo "Sender test" > /dev/kmsg

Also, use code tags when pasting output because it makes it more readable on the forum (
text
)

Ok, netconsole sender is ok but the syslog receiver is not. Can you upload /etc/rsyslog.conf, /etc/rsyslog.d/netconsole.conf somewhere so that I can test them on my setup?

Ok, I tested with your netconsole.conf and when I restart rsyslog it complains (in /var/log/syslog) that the syntax is wrong at line 4. Your netconsole.conf looks like this:
Code: Select all
$ModLoad imudp
$RuleSet remote

than /var/log/netconsole.log
& stop

$InputUDPSeverBindRuleset remote
$UDPServerRun 6666

$RuleSet RSYSLOG_DefaultRuleset

The complaint is:
Code: Select all
Jul 20 11:12:28 kbd rsyslogd-2184: action 'than' treated as ':omusrmsg:than' - please use ':omusrmsg:than' syntax instead, 'than' will not be supported in the future [v8.16.0 try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2184 ]
Jul 20 11:12:28 kbd rsyslogd-2207: error during parsing file /etc/rsyslog.d/netconsole.conf, on or before line 4: warnings occured in file '/etc/rsyslog.d/netconsole.conf' around line 4 [v8.16.0 try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/2207 ]
Jul 20 11:12:28 kbd rsyslogd-3003: invalid or yet-unknown config file command 'InputUDPSeverBindRuleset' - have you forgotten to load a module? [v8.16.0 try http://www.rsyslog.com/e/3003 ]

So you have two problems:
1. At line 4 you have an extra than and a space that needs to be removed. Line 4 should look like /var/log/netconsole.log
2. At line 7 you have a typo: InputUDPSeverBindRuleset should be InputUDPServerBindRuleset. See the typo? You misspelled Server as Sever. You should use copy-paste from code blocks in the future to avoid sneaky typos. :)

After fixing the typos and restarting rsyslog I can get messages in netconsole.log.
Good luck!

Hi mad_ady,

Thank for your help & lesson learn.

But my system unable to capture data into netconsole.log when system restart.
I need to add in netconsole in the end at modules.conf

# /etc/modules-load.d/modules.conf

echo 'netconsole' | sudo tee -a \
/etc/modules-load.d/modules.conf
netconsole

#Only 1 system without the 'netconsole' work, is it ok to add in netconsole line?

Thank for your help, hopefully I can capture the system random freeze & reboot problem.

Thank :D

If you add the module to modules.conf it will load as soon as possible. Sometimes this results in sending all previous boot messages to the receiver, otherwise it doesn't. You can also load it from /etc/rc.local later with modprobe netconsole
Either way you're interested in messages after boot, and you can test it works with sudo echo "netconsole test" > /dev/kmsg

Sometimes I've experienced crashes that don't generate any netconsole output (maybe the network port is disabled by the kernel as it crashes). So netconsole remains a best-effort solution. You can try with a physical serial cable next :(
